Flaming Sword Spell?

How do you build a spell that covers a sword (or other weapon) in flames? Say a 4D6 EB?

4D6 EB (Flaming Weapon)

+1 Continuous

-1/2 requires melee weapon of opportunity

-1/2 No Range

-1/2 Liked to Sword Strike

Would you even need continuous?

Any one have any better ideas?

Thanks

You don't need Continuous. Just buy the power and use it as you will. For END/time limit concerns you might consider Continuing Charges and/or some kind of Limitations based on starting up & maintaining the flame. But EB, No Range, Focus Of Opportunity handles the basic attack ability. (Continuous would allow you to set enemies on fire, though, which could be fun.)

I've used Damage Shield for a flaming sword, localized around the blade. That way you damage your attackers' weapons with a block, which is cool. But that drives up the Active Points, if AP is something you have to worry with. Also I wouldn't automatically Link it to the HKA. Leaving it separate allows you to burn things without striking them.

I'd do it as an RKA, rather than an EB. 4d6 EB isn't going to hurt much, but against opponents without rED a 1d6+1 RKA can smart. Also, fire is usually done as a Killing Attack in HERO. Of course, the Human Torch's fire bolts never seem to cause much BODY damage, do they? One of the nice things about HERO is that you often have more than one way of building something.

There's another issue to consider that's come up in previous flaming sword threads. If you're dealing with enemies that have a lot of defense, it's not cost effective to split your damage between a physical attack (the weapon) and energy damage.

8 PD vs 4 PDR/4 EDR = 4 damage

4 PD/4 ED vs 4 PDR/4 EDR = 0 damage

Depending on how magic spells are purchased in your game, this might not matter.
