  1. Re: History of Space Opera, aka Finally an io9 article that doesn't suck.

More recently, the FATE-powered Starblazer Adventures RPG (based on, and including a great deal of art from, the 80's British comic of the same name) embraces its space opera roots.

Also, wouldn't Warhammer 40K fall a little short of space opera because of the smaller scope that an individual's influence has on the galaxy at large? In other words, do the actions of individuals in that game affect galactic affairs? I always thought that characters in that game were treated more as cogs in a machine, ground down by an uncaring universe.

I've adapted the 16 speed grid above into a 12 speed

Will combat still start on Segment 12? If that is the case, any character with SPD 1 won't get an action in the first turn. Looking at the current speed chart for 6E, I guess that is the way it works now anyways, so maybe it's not an issue?

  3. Re: Why is Speed so unpopular?

why dont we make turns 24 segments long' date=' and then just double speed[/quote']

I can't tell if this is a serious question, so forgive me if it isn't. Would the turn be the same amount of time? Or are you thinking that a phase should take a 1/2 second? 1/2 phase would be 1/4 second then, right?

  4. Re: Why is Speed so unpopular?

If' date=' like me, you're not really that into comics and want to play at the heroic rather than superheroic level, then yeah, you'll care about a lot of finer grained distinctions that would be too small to measure from the point of view of Superman or the Hulk.[/quote']

Isn't this very subject addressed in the "Toolkitting: The Strength Table" section on 6EV1:43? Of course, that does require a measure of work to rewrite the strength table...

  5. Re: Slayer

For animal stats I would consult the Hero System Bestiary. Dogs on pgs. 462-464 and wolves on pg. 494.

Slayers and monster hunters? Depends on how those terms are defined.

Forensic medicine? Depends on how you perceive their background. Forensic medicine sounds like a pretty specialized field. What justification can you give for the skill?

  6. Re: Character Size and combat

Perhaps the additional distance penalty is offset by the size of your target? At 100m tall (I went with Gigantic), those creatures are providing a +16 to hit (see 6E251), which means that the targets can be quite a bit further away from each other. Just two targets? If they are the same size as the colossal creature, they can be up to 32m away from each other before penalties, right?

  7. Re: Adding damage to weapons

I was thinking I could buy AP as a naked modifier and then just purchase a bunch of hand-to-hand damage classes' date=' but I’m not sure how to restrict those to only attacks with a sword, since it doesn’t seem like you can apply limitations to those.[/quote']

In Hero System Martial Arts there are a number of maneuvers that take OIF (specific type of weapon of opportunity) -1/2. I can see you doing the same thing and specifying swords as the specific type of weapon of opportunity needed. Perhaps you could try something similar?

P.S. Which edition of the rules are you using?

  8. Re: Hero System Sixth Edition Concise

A couple of thoughts I've had as I've read through this thread:

The Hero System Core Library is not yet complete. I'm still waiting (perhaps indefinitely) for Hero System Vehicles to finish off the Core Library mentioned in the Introduction of Volume One. Before any further revisions are made to the system, I would like to see the Core Library completed. Then I can feel like I have all of the rules intended for the Hero System Sixth Edition. Once the entire Core Library is complete, then introduce the "concise" version of all of the rules in one book.

Of course, there is another point I've been thinking about. References. All current rules references point to volumes one and two. Do you intend to have the references now point to this new book? When will that change be made? For example, rules references from Champions, Fantasy Hero, or Star Hero will need to point to the new core book, right? Will the changes be made on the next printing of those books? What about the current lot? Will people who pick up the new book miss references if they get a first printing of a genre book? It's not a huge deal, but it is inconvenient.

To me, what is being presented as a new core book sounds like it would serve better for the next or revised edition of the game. Perhaps it could be called ShREd (Sixth Revised Edition)?

  9. Re: Legendsmiths Considers: Genre Quick Starts you'd like to see

Of course I think of this after I hit send. I've mentioned that I hero with my daughter who is 8 now' date=' and others mentioned that they also game with their young kids. So how about a quick start Champions for the younger set? Something that is very Silver age and tv friendly?[/quote']

I would love something like this. In fact, I'll see what I can throw together over the weekend.

So, would this be taking the guidelines in the appropriate genre book (Champions, Fantasy Hero, Star Hero, etc.) and hard-coding the options as setting requirements? The aim is to only require the Basic Rulebook, everything else to play should be contained in the Quick Start, right? I'm guessing that a laser focus will be needed. Pre-created characters (villains, tangential NPCs and heroes), sample adventure, maps, and advice on plausible directions that the story can go when the adventure ends. I also think that a breakdown of how each character was created would be useful. If not each character, maybe at least one breakdown for each type (villain, NPC, and hero)? That way, players can see how to customize their own characters to fit the setting in the Quick Start.

  10. Re: Religion in Science-Fiction?

What about a species which thinks of themselves as gods? Perhaps they're immortal, or nearly so. Perhaps their technology has developed to the point that they themselves consider it miraculous. Maybe they even expect more "primitive" species to worship them.

What about a species which knows exactly what happens to them after their corporeal demise?

An interesting idea! Let's take it further. They're immortal and invulnerable. At first, this kind of character sounds rather boring. They can't be physically hurt and they'll never die. What happens to their minds over time? Can they reproduce? If so, will their takeover of the universe be inevitable? What happens to such a character in a black hole? Considering invulnerability, can their muscles atrophy/grow? As they cannot die, would they consider themselves gods, despite not sensing everything in the universe at once? Could they, given enough time, know all things about all things? What happens when there is a disagreement between two of them? Will they fight for eternity because they can?

  11. Re: Religion and Faith

I think bigbywolfe nailed the boilerplate Hero response: it depends.

I've seen a number of definitions of faith. For me, there is a large difference between belief and faith. One of my favorite definitions identifies faith as a source of power. So, even if the miracles are occurring with greater frequency, the source of the miracles is still faith. Perhaps it represents the strength of the connection between an individual and the divine?

  12. Re: Need some serious help

This kind of thing seems to frequently happen in Burn Notice, though the unknown enemy eventually appears/is discovered. Sometimes, it was just a matter of waiting for the shadow organization/individual to make a mistake. I agree that more information would be helpful.

  13. Re: Complete your "Ultimate" collection!

So, the first package arrived. Aside from the packing material that my six year old son happily distributed around my bedroom, I was extremely happy with what I received. I've only had a few moments to thumb through a few of the books, but am pleased with my purchase. I also decided to pull the trigger on the second deal. Though I am committed to Sixth Edition, I think I'll find all of the books to be useful. Besides, I might just do some reviews of the books with an eye towards usefulness to Sixth Edition players! After all, it mentions the plethora of existing (albeit, older) material available for use by Sixth edition players.

I'll likely post again when the second deal's package arrives.

  14. Re: Complete your "Ultimate" collection!

And they have a new deal today, which (coincidentally) is the same day I'm expecting to receive the first offer in the mail!

    Here's the link: http://gamerati.com/loot/2011/11/16/heroes-systems-and-bundles/

Five supplements for $16.47 plus shipping. Here's what you get:

    1) Conquerors, Killers and Crooks

    2) Cops, Crews and Cabals

    3) Monsters, Minions and Marauders

    4) Nobles, Knights and Necromancers

    5) Villains, Vandals and Vermin

Again, ends today. Sorry for the short notice! I'll post up my response to getting the first package later today (hopefully).

  15. Re: Is this fighter kosher?

Is this thread about appropriate cannibalism?

    Only of starships!

In order to make a judgment call on appropriateness, we might need a little more info on the baseline for the campaign. Do you have the group's ship handy, as well?

  16. Re: Somebody needs to write this villain up now!

When some people think Silver Age' date=' they think of heroic, upstanding actions, good always winning, and no one ever getting really hurt. Me, I think of silliness like this, which would have insulted my intelligence as an 8-year-old. It's stuff like this that makes me prefer a Dark Champions attitude in my games.[/quote']

Whereas, I find the silliness a refreshing break from reality that looks like a lot of fun to play!

As to writing the character up, he has superhuman skill with firearms. When I think about the expertise required to fire eight guns at two tiny bracelets and hit with every shot (with simultaneous trigger pulls, to boot), I am left in awe.

The many arms could provide a bonus to grab maneuvers and the many legs could provide Knockback Resistance.

He has antennae, so he must be able to talk with insects and maybe even control them.

I'm guessing he should have insect-like toughness an strength, too, that is common to insect-themed characters.

Crimson in his name makes me think Communist Russian (like the Crimson Dynamo), so some language skills might be necessary. It also means he might have an affiliation with the KGB, which could give him Access or Contact perks, along with a Hunted complication.

  17. Re: Ifrit

Which of the following fire based powers would be better? Flaming (When a person teleports' date=' they appear to be engulfed in intense flames, though this does not harm anyone who possesses this power.) or fiery flight which leaves a trail of fire as the character flies?[/quote']

Better? Depends on how you envision your character. Personally, I like the flaming teleport better, as it seems scarier to me. A flaming boo!

A trail of fire makes it hard to shake somebody following you. Then again, the Thraddash had a pretty cool ship in Star Control 2. Plus, you can sky write, ala the Human Torch.
