  1. Re: Am I doing this right?

This is our first time playing the Hero System and so we are working out a some of the specifics of the game. It's our standard game now...we love it. What would be a reasonable PD for a barbarian or any other 'tank' type character? His chain and plate armor gives him a RPD of 7, so is a PD of 10 to high?

Specifically' date=' 17 PD is a heck of a lot. You're getting into superhero territory there. Now if your barbarian is named "Conan" and you're playing a fairly high powered fantasy game, then that might be all right. But it seems at least likely to me that your GM would put the kibosh on that much PD.[/quote']
  2. I have a barbarian that wears chain and plate giving him a rpd of 7. He also has a natural pd of 10 due to his background. When he gets hit with a HA of say 12 points of stun damage, the armor of 7 deletes all but five points but then his pd of 10 would negate all other damage.

    Is this correct?

    Thanks for the help.

  3. I just got my shiny new macbook pro and finally have the heavy lifting to be able to play some MMO's. I'm trying to decide between Champions and DC Universe. Can anyone give some insight into which would be better? I'm kind of leaning towards champions online because it seems like there might be a bit better customization.

  4. I've been asking some questions about how people use their ipad in a different thread, but it got me to thinking about technology in general and how people use it, if at all. I am normally a pencil and paper sort of player/GM and I do most of my planning for campaigns on paper, or I print it out from a word doc and stick it in a folder. I don't have my computer at the table when I play, but, as I mentioned, I just got an ipad and I was wondering how best to incorporate that into my game. I'm experimenting now, so it's possible it might not stay at the game table, who knows.

What sort of technology do you use at the game table or in preparation for the game?

  5. Re: Anyone use DM's Toolkit for Hero Fantasy?

    What does it do?

It is an app for the Ipad that allows one to create characters, weapons, spells, campaigns including notes, story arcs, and encounters with the monsters/creature stats put in. There doesn't look to be any templates for the Hero system, which is what I was asking about, but does have a lot of templates for 4E/CoC/Pathfinder and more. Here is a link to a youtube video.

Just for an fyi, I don't make any money off of this and I am not trying to promote it. (I thought it sounded a little like I was praising this app). I haven't tried it out for much as of yet, so I can really speak of the quality and usefulness.

But I would still like to hear from those that might have used it. I'm normally a pencil and paper sort of player/GM but I thought I might try to bring some of the technology that I have laying around, into my game. (There's another good questions.) I will post this one in the forums as well.

  6. I'm thinking of creating a pulp fiction setting that has some of the feel of Call of Chuthulu and Brian Lumley's vampire books, set in England of the 30's, 40's, or maybe the late fifties early sixties. I'm at a bit of a loss on where to start researching this idea. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  7. Absolutely nuttin...okay just had to finish saying that.

But seriously. I'm sure I missed something but can't seem to find the reason why experience points are added to creatures. For example, in the Beastiary (6E), the Werewolf on page 180 has an xp total of 223. I'm guessing this has something to do with the creation of the creature and not an amount that the players would recieve as this contradicts the rules for give players character points.

Any help with this conundrum would be appreciated.

  8. Re: How to understand the SuperHero Genre

I would quote some of the posts but it would be like using a highlighter to highlight all the good parts. The whole page would be highlighted. I'm starting to understand more of the genre and I'm hoping that with more reading of comics I will be better able to shine the proper light on the supers genre. Does anyone have a homebrew supers adventure that they would be willing to share? I think that possibly seeing how an adventure shakes out might help with my perspective on roleplaying a supers game.

  9. Re: How to understand the SuperHero Genre

Thanks to all of you that responded. I'm starting to understand a little more about the genre, especially when it is compared to fantasy games. I was at the comic book store and was looking around, but it was a bit overwhelming to try and decided on something to read. I picked up all of the issues of "The Blackest Night," as it seemed to be an intersting story line. I am enjoying it, but it would help if I knew more about the people/heroes involved. I also picked up some Dare Devil, as that is one of the heroes I played in the Marvel Supers game. One thing that turned me off almost right away was how the writer would have Dare Devil, or someone else in the comic, speak out loud their internal thoughts. That really throws the whole comic for me right away and makes me think that the writing is cheesy. Back in the day I also read Silver Surfer and Magneto. I thought those two were pretty cool and I like their powers.

It's possible that the genre isn't for me no matter how much I want to like it, but I'm not about to give up yet. Again, thanks for the feedback and why this genre captivates you. I would like to hear more, if possible. I do think that reading the thoughts of others on the topic is helping me form a basis of understanding.

  10. Re: How to understand the SuperHero Genre

I have been reading some comics and thinking, that would make more sense if I knew who such and such was. Is there a primer sort of comic that delves into the history of specific characters are the Marvel/DC World? That might help with understanding the comics more.

  11. Re: How to understand the SuperHero Genre

Again, thanks for all the input. I do really appreciate you all taking the time to voice your thoughts. I am mulling over now what the real difference is between a fantasy game of defeating the goblins is versus a supers game of beating up the bad guy. Mabye I should be asking what draws one to this genre and see if I can take on those views as well. I just having the darnedest time immersing myself in this genre and I really would like too.

  12. Re: How to understand the SuperHero Genre

Thanks for your thoughts. You make a great point about idiot plots regardless of genre. I would appreciate more feedback, if possible. I would be especially interested in those who might have shared an opinion like mine, but have since been able to find something they love about the super hero genre.

  13. First let me say that I don't mean any disrespect by this post.

I really want to like the superhero genre and I am reading the Champions 6th edition book now. I'm also reading comic books and have played marvel super heroes back in the day, with the same sort of willingness and wanting to love the genre but it sort of escapes me, for lack of a better phrase.

I come from a Fantasy background and started with DnD. I am nutso about Fantasy Hero and love how it works. Is it possible to be just too into fantasy to understand or "get" the super hero genre?

Is there a way to really appreciate this genre? I read comic books and I'm thinking, "Man, just give the dude a sword or an AK 47 and shred this cape wearing fool." It seems like a lot of problems could be solved in these worlds if people just used lethal force. (I do understand that that is not an option for many heroic minded super heroes.)

I find that the only real fun is creating a character and then pitting them against other characters, but duking it out is only fun for so long. If there is a deeper layer to this genre, than I am missing it.

Does anyone else feel like this? Maybe you were of the same mind and now have come to appreciate the genre. Please tell me what changed your mind set. I really want to like this genre but it just seems to one dimensional in that characters fight and that is all there is to the genre.

Any help with this will be greatly appreciated.

  14. I'm pretty sure someone has covered this at some point, but I am new here so please forgive me if this is a question often asked. I did do a search before posting this but I couldn't get the results I was looking for.

Has there been a conversion of DC and/or Marvel characters into Champions stats?

    Thanks for any help.
