  1. Re: Millennium City 2001

    Writing directly from memory...

    The Champions

The team will gather during this year, and they will be a "fully accepted" part of the city’s legal system during the next year. I’ve written down the official Champion’s members in the order they will join the team (provided that the players don’t interfere).

    1. Defender (James Harmon IV): Have just arrived from less than successful time as a crime-fighter in New York City
    2. Sapphire (Corazon Valenzuela): Has been a known super for three years, currently on tour as part of her musical career
    3. Nighthawk (Mark Whitaker): For Millennium City's dark knight not much is different prior to him becoming a part of the team
    4. Ironclad (Drogen Lar): He has fled the alien gladiator arena with the course set on Earth, and will arrive later this year
    5. Witchcraft (Bethany Duquesne): She is currently living in Vibora Bay, and won’t be moving to Millenium city for several months

  2. I've decided to start a new campaign set in Millennium City. The campaign will start in early 2001; after Defenders move to the city, but prior to his press conference (the official start of the Champions).

Provided that I run the game "by the book," how would you recommend me to run it?

What would you change from the official setting?

  3. Re: Power suggestions for a "Perfect" human being

To conserve points I recommend that you create your character as either primarily mentally perfect or primarily physically perfect.

For a mentally perfect human many of the mental powers (and talents) could be purchased as super-skills.

For a physically perfect human take a look at some of the Greek or Roman mythological heroes.

  4. Re: What have I missed?

Thanks for the help guys. You’re helpful as always.

I’m sorry if I was unclear in my first mail. The books on the list are the ones I already own, not the ones I thought about buying.

    The Combat Handbook

What are new in the book? I have the Ultimate Martial Artist, Fantasy Hero, Ninja Hero and Dark Champions; don’t they cover the same ground?

    Hudson City

From what I understood from reading the playtest this is – sort of – Gotham City, so this is a definite buy even if I’m not sure if it’s number one on the list.

    Pulp Hero

I read the playtest and I really enjoyed the book, so this will probably be one of the books I’ll buy.

    Spacer's Toolkit

Another playtest (which I also liked) book, but this one I will probably not buy, since I’m not certain that my group will be so keen on running a Space Hero campaign directly after the very long Dragonstar d20 campaign we’ve been involved with. Still, the book my serve as inspiration for magic items, alien tech (we’ve talked about running an apocalypse game) or super gadgets, so I might change my mind.

The Ultimate Mentalist, The Ultimate Metamorph and The Ultimate Skill

I’m a completist, and this line have caught my interest so I will (eventually) by them all. I have decided on which one I ”need” the must right know though. What are their key benefits (besides the ones I can figure from the title), from a generic role playing perspective? I’m not just talking about using the books in Hero System; I’m talking using the books in any game (primary d20, Tri-Stat, Hero System and GURPS).

    USDB2

    Another will buy…

    You've gotta have character

I like the concept, and I will probably buy the book in the future, but since I own the Digital Hero magazines that contain the characters this book isn’t highest on the “to buy” list.

  5. In May 2005 I bought a house together with my girlfriend, leading to a temporary dip in both role-playing time and cash to fund new games. Now – two years later – the situation seems to get brighter. In other, I intend to get both more involved in role-playing again. Now to the question:

“During my two years leave from the Hero System, what have I missed?”

I think my current financial situation has the possibility to fund up to four or five books, but since I’ve missed most of the happenings in the Hero community I haven’t got a clue about the current situation. Can you pleas help me compile some kind of shopping list, based on what you think are lacking from my “inventory list” below?

    • Champions

  6. Re: CHAMPIONS UNIVERSE: NotW -- Updating Villains

Um' date=' since when has Marus been a vigilante?[/quote']

    A few hours ago... ;)

Okay, I admit it I was too lazy to write heroes/vigilantes once more. Besides, I just took some random heroes from memory. I guess there are much better choice.

Based on their plot seeds (or their roles in Galactic Champions) Deuce, Icicle, Soulfire and Zigzag would be prime targets for reformation. Wasn't Thalya a bad girl during the Champions era?

Prime targets for hero/vigilante turned evil could basically be anyone who is known for being "on the edge", or that has poor enough stats for being telepathically manipulated. Likewise, could a evil dimensional twin be presented. As for the latest idea, please add a page with a few known evil twins of the Champions and their man allies (and good twins of some major opponents of the Champions).

  7. Re: CHAMPIONS UNIVERSE: NotW -- Updating Villains

I don't know if this counts, but how about reports on heroes/vigilantes who are assumed to have turned villains and villains that seems to have reformed?

    My prime candidates would be:

    Vigilantes turned villain

    Amphibian

    Eagle-Eye

    Marus

    Nightwind

    Sai

    Reformed villains

    Deuce

    Icicle

    Nebula

    Tachyon

... but I guess there are better candidates.

  8. Re: Post-Apocalyptic Anime

Kazei 5' date='[/i'] from HERO Games. It has some post-apoc elements, esp. version 2.0 (under construction), which features the words "The Third World War."

I bought the first edition some time ago. It's a great book, but I haven't read it for lately so I have to refresh my mind.

What are the main differences between 1st and 2nd edition?

  9. Re: Post-Apocalyptic Anime

Of the ones that I have seen on your list some of the common themes are the world is devastated' date=' or running down.[/quote']

If I've understood this correctly most P-A animes share many of the traits of a dystopian sci-fi. Is that correct?

Monsters are attacking enclaves of civilization with is fighting back with whatever is at hand.

Are the monster always a physical enemy, or could it be a metaphor for some form of paranoia (like the fear for the bioroids in Appleseed)?

The tech level varies but some high tech mixed with low tech seems to be common.

For some reason these line made me think of a really old anime called Starzinger. Would you call that one a post-apocalyptic anime?

Some special abilities are possessed by members of the worlds.

What would the most common power modifiers be? I guess limitations such as unreliable could fit the genre.

  10. Re: Post-Apocalyptic Anime

This is the current list of inspiration:

    A wind named Amnesia

    Akira

    Appleseed

    Battle angel Alita

    Fist of the North Star

    Genesis Survivor Gaiarth

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

    Neon Genesis Evangelion

    Wolf's Rain

So, if I’ve got this right, almost all post-apocalyptic anime are at the same time cyberpunk movies. Can I even assume that in anime the post-apocalyptic era isn’t a separate era, but rather a potential stage of the cyberpunk era? My initial thought was that a post-apocalyptic anime would share strong similarities with final fantasy, but that seems to be way wrong. Not that I don’t mind the cyberpunk genre, but I wasn’t prepared for it. If we started with the information on the link below, which anime elements would fit the genre best? Can you please recommend any anime pages like the one linked below?

Before this thread continue I shall just give a short introduction to the world I initally intended to use.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutant_%28role-playing_game%29

Initially I intended to revamp the 1984 edition (or the 2002 edition) of the world, but provided that this thread continues in the direction it is currently heading I might choose the 1989 edition instead.

  11. Re: Post-Apocalyptic Anime

Thanks for the help. I've seen the newer Appleseed (I didn't know there was another one) and Akira, and they are both good. Besides Evangelion I've never heard of the others.

What kind of conclusions can I draw from these movies? My take is that these are some of the key components:

    Mega-cities surrounded by wasteland

    Gun Fu

    Mecha

    Psionics

    Bioroids (or something similar)

  12. Over at the Steve Jackson Games forum I’ve started a discussion about creating a superhero world using Public Domain heroes and villains. Despite the fact that this looks like an exact copy of Terra Obscura (or the Planetary), I can honestly say that I hadn't read them before I got the idea. For some reason I have this thing for homage characters.

The idea behind this thread is to…

    1. Help each other search for interesting public domain characters
    2. Rewrite them so that they fit better into out common vision for the new hero world
    3. Create a common world for all the heroes

Malibu have used characters from Centaur Publications, and Wildstorm has done the same with characters from Nedor Comics (Terra Obscura), so we can safely assume that these companies are free for the taking. I guess that the characters from Fiction House and Lev Gleason Publications are Public Domain, but I'm far from certain.

Is there any interest for joining me in this project?
