  1. Re: 25th Anniversary Winding Down

Just received my C25 in the mail yesterday.

    I am #144/200. Hey! I'm a full gross! :celebrate

I've gotta say what a beautiful piece of work this book is. It was interesting to read some of the stories from the early days of Hero Games from George, Steve P., Bruce, and Ray.

  2. Re: Variant die-rolling mechanics

    Mango.

I think the problem is that, for combat, you very often have OCV and DCV figures which are in the 8-12 range, at least in superhero games.

Counting the Body is likely to take longer than counting up 3d6.

    Slower combat = bad.

Hmm... hadn't thought of that. :o

Honestly, I was thinking about it more in lines of a heroic game, really, where 8-10 CV would be the *maximum*... Though that means my idea might not be very scalable. Interesting. Bears some thought.

    And, hey, I *like* mango....:P

OTOH it could speed up damage: just look for BODY and roll against defence value/5, and take the number of excess successes x 3 in stun.

I mean you'll never make it an official change, but it would be interesting to see how it works.

Out of interest have you played much WoD?

Well, yes, I have. I find it interesting that they have a similar die mechanic that they use for nearly everything that the Hero System has only been using for damage if you really think about it.

Mostly, though, what I'm looking for is if anyone has ever tried something like this... or if they've only thought about it, yet still have it resemble the Hero System, at least in the "Character Description" portion of it. In other words, the character sheets for my variant wouldn't (necessarily) be much different than anyone else's, I just have different methods for task and/or combat resolution.

If so, I'm interested in hearing these variants and how well they worked or didn't work.

  3. I know it's sacrilegious, but I've been thinking about trying out some variant die-rolling mechanics for the Hero System. Nothing else would change, just the way dice are rolled and/or the results counted.

For example, I can envision a system where everything is done through the "counting Body" system such as for normal damage. Every Characteristic would get 1d6 per every 5 pts (including STR) normally. Roll the dice and count the "Body," and compare it to a difficulty number for success. Buying a skill at the 3pt level allows you to roll 1d6 per every 3 Characteristic pts. Every +2 pts in a Skill adds +1d6. Skill vs. Skill Contests would be a comparison of "Body" Totals.

Combat would be done much the same way: Roll 1d6 per 3 DEX to hit, and your opponent rolls 1d6 per 3 DEX. The combat modifiers and maneuvers would work the same way, except they add +1d6 for every +1. CSLs would add dice to the pool.

I've had other ideas, but this was the most radical.

    Thoughts? Problems? Fruit? :o

Does anyone else have any other ideas like this?

  5. Re: Plot Seed: Six Places to Nuke When You’re Serious

oldie but goodie the strategic gold reserve at fort knox

alternativly there are stategic oil reserves also major refinaries (there are only a few taking out even 2 or 3 at once would seriously damage things

Fort Knox gets the reputation for having a lot of gold stored in a massive vault, but the largest deposit of gold bullion in the world is actually at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The gold held there is actually owned by countries other than the US, so attacking there wouldn't hurt us as much as an attack at Fort Knox (which would be a kick in the nads to the US), but it would throw the global economy into chaos. Watch Die Hard with a Vengeance with Bruce Willis for an idea of what I'm talking about.

  6. Re: Miami Vice

Not trying to be snotty, but...

Michael Mann created Miami Vice, wrote the pilot movie, and when the show got picked up by NBC, he became the executive producer and one of the principal writers of the series. So saying that Mann is "involved" with Miami Vice is kinda like saying that the President is "involved" with the government.

    No, I'm not a MV geek. ;)

And, YES, I'm eagerly anticipating the movie... ;)

  7. Re: What fundamental things did they really get "right"?

I've got something to add to my previous statements about what the Hero System got fundimentally right.

    Publication.

This game died in the 90s. Capital D, big I and another huge D. Died. No writers, no printers, no publishers. Nothing. It bounced around a few companies, but that was just circling the drain. The whole time the fans cried out for their favorite game. Some of us pretended it had never gone away and just kept on truckin' like it was still out there avaiable in the stores and a new suppliments could expected next week. We talked and debated issues concerning the rules like they were new, like they were something that might someday get revised or corrected despite the fact there was no chance in hell of seing anything new in point.

Then some players decided to pretend for real, bought the rights and made the rest of our delusional wishes become a reality.

In short, the most fundamental thing the Hero System got right is that it never gave up. This isn't just a game about heroes, this is a heroic game.

Amen, brother... amen. Preach on about the game system that rose from the grave!

    All hail Hero! :hail:

I'll take my meds now. :fear:

  12. Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now?

"Feel Good Inc" by the Gorillaz (from the cube next door)

Could the Gorillaz be more than a gimmick band? Recently, at a show at the Apollo Theater in NYC, they experienced technical problems with the projectors, forcing them to do the concert without visuals. According to one source, they got a standing ovation after the show.

    Interesting...
