  1. Re: Things that work in comics but don't work in Champions

All right' date=' perhaps I should phrase that with no inherent ability to resist lethal attacks such as armor or a forcefield. Its comic convention that keeps them alive in comics, but that doesn't nessacarily apply in an rpg so I've rarely seen a character without some form of Resistant be it Combat Luck or the classic "armored costume".[/quote']

I believe this is why energy blasts were created instead of calling them all killing attacks. The energy blast is the "comic convention" which keeps characters alive.

  2. Re: The Mystic World

Like the section on the gods too' date=' but why is Leech shown there (and later with the section on banishing outer worldly monsters)? Sure looks like him, anyway. [/quote']

I believe those are just some leech-like demons. Not the villain Leech from ckc.

  3. Re: The Mystic World

I also really do like the idea that the Dragon is the inspiration behind VIPER and COIL/King Cobra. I'd been thinking of something involving ol' KC and COIL making their own dragon -- now I know where the idea came from.

The dragon behind VIPER and COIL is really Nama. Just many speculate "the" dragon is the source.

  4. Re: The Mystic World

Not to cut into agent x's tirade but there is nothing about the gods discussed in the mystic world that was not discussed in the ultimate super mage 10 years ago. This is old new and the tirade is 10 years too late.

Religion is handled in the champions universe in the same way it is handed in the comic book words: All religions are real and all religions are false. They are real because the manifestation of belief brings the various gods into existence. They are false do to the nature of celestials, lords of chaos/order, etc who are the real balance/creationist beings of the universe.

The few paragraphs which mention "real" religion are no more demeaning to religious groups those paragraphs talking about "pagan" religions are to other's. Some people just get bored and like to blow thing out of proportion. I recommend that everyone read the few paragraphs themselves and they will see there is no reason for the uproar here.

  5. Re: Proposed Rule Change for 5th Ed Rev. flexible Power point of origin Steve please note

If you really want to be able to very the PoO what you could do is allow a power skill roll with the normal -1 per 10 active points. This would allow a character like the Human Torch with a 60 ap fire blast to make a -6 "fire powers" skill roll and be able to project it from his head in that instance instead of his normal hands. That seems far more sensible then changing the rules, which still in my opinion accurately reflect the comics they are designed to emulate.

  7. Re: Proposed Rule Change for 5th Ed Rev. flexible Power point of origin Steve please note

At the same time' date=' I am still strongly persuaded that an enemy being able to hamper use of an Attack Power by grabbing or somehow restraining the origin body part is something that the character should be indemnified for, by taking a Limitation (if not by taking the full -1/2 Restrainable, that does not let use the Power at all if Grabbed, by a -1/4 version, giving penalties to rolls using the power if the origin body part if Grabbed).[/quote']

The -1/4 version is called gestures.

Let's seek a compromise position. Why not interpret or change the rule so that any character must select an unchangeable point of origin, but is not obliged to choose "one" point of origin. Any character may have up to a reasonable number of different points of origin, typically three, and generally to be chosen among classical origin points: eyes, forehead, chest, mouth, hands (maybe also feet). That's just what I was advocating for: the possibility for the character to switch between some of the classical origin poins and not be "disarmed" by someone grabbing their one origin body part, which I do not think it's fair the system may inflict on the character "free". STR and TK and Mental Attack Powers do not have this problem, and I really do not think other Attack Powers should suffer this unbalance.

Your idea is not supported by the genre. Few characters have origin point options. The ones which do in comics probably paid for the +1/4 advantage.

Do you think this is viable?

Anything is viable in your own games. In the official rules it would make a character too versatile. You put a bag over their head to block the eyes and forhead blasts and still get hit with the chest blast. There's a reason it should be an advantage, so that both players and their opponents do not become impossible to defeat.

  8. Re: Proposed Rule Change for 5th Ed Rev. flexible Power point of origin Steve please

Can you see the contradiction ? A Power without Restrainable is assumed not to be liable to blocked by restraining the generating body part' date=' yet mandating a fixed point of origin is assuming just that. [/quote']

You are confusing different things here. Restrainable means that the power cannot work if the body part is restrained. You tie up Angel and he cannot fly, but if you tie up Superman he can fly.

A restrainable attack would be one where the person can be grabbed or have something happen to him to keep his powers from being used at all. Restrainable attack powers are rare both in comics and the game. Restrainable is most often used to define non-focuses such as wings or Wolverine's claws. Things which are not a focus due to the "can be removed" barrier but are able to be stopped from being used.

A character with restrainable on an energy blast would be one that could not use his power if entangled, no matter which body part it came from, while someone who did not have the limitation could still use his hands or eyes or nose or whatever to attempt to break from the entangle.

  9. Re: Proposed Rule Change for 5th Ed Rev. flexible Power point of origin Steve please

actually' date=' Ironman, Batman, Green Arrow, Greenlantern, superman, and Cyclops all fit in either the Focus catagory, or the SFX implied origin*. however, can't the Human torch shoot flame out of either hand? does he always have to use both hands, or always the right right hand? the same goes for Iceman. [/quote']

I believe if you define the hands as the origin point it can be any hand or both at the same time due to the sfx of a rapid fire or mpa attack. The difference is that while most characters can shoot out of either hand they cannot change the PoO to be eyes for the next attack because the hands are entangled. The +1/4 indirect advantage allows for that.

  10. Re: Turakian Age: Drakine Population Dynamics

My recommendation: ignore that line completely. (And ignore the one about them having breasts as well--nonsensical for reptiliods).

I see no reason to ignore this. The fact that reptiles in the "real" world do not have breasts in no-way should infer that dragon-kind humanoids cannot have breasts in a fantasy world. These are worlds of our imagination and should not be limited to real-world ideas, imo.

  11. Re: The Mystic World

I just completed reading mine as well. I would give the writing an A, presentation a B, Artwork a C. I guess that is an overall grade of B. The art, imo, over the last few books has really pulled the quality of the books down. The artwork in TMW just is not enspiring and does not seem to have a superhero feel to it. Most of the artwork is generic and would seem to fit in any game book. It should be superhero-centric, imo, as it is a Champions product.

  12. Re: Do you always use character points to buy weapons & armor?

Good to know! Why do the weapons & armor have real point costs? Isn't that for purposes of character point cost?

They are basically there to show point totals to the players and gm so that there is a degree of balance and understanding. The totals also give people an idea for non-heroic games as to the overall cost of an item.

  13. Re: Extra CON only to prevent CON Stunning

just seems rare to me that gms use the con stat much. When was the last time you have seen the flash get the sniffles?

Con is not well represented within the system. I personally use con rolls for immunities to various diseases, poisons, and the like. Immunity to the flu might be a con roll -1. Immunity to bee venom might be con roll +1. In that way the con stat does get used in some fashion, assuming you have games that take into account cold & flu seasons and the like.

  14. Re: Two Books...

If I only had $60.00 I'd buy Conquerors, Killers & Crooks - you can always use villains; Sharper Than A Serpant's Tooth - good adventure that adds a new villain group/organization to the game; and Sidekick - great for quick references or to help new players to the system. $60.00 well spent, imho.

  15. Re: Turakian Age with no Kal Turak

I'm still pondering whether to buy TA (the whacked-out magic system put me off' date=' but the otherwise positive comments are making me reconsider it as source material).[/quote']

There is a copy for sale on eBay right now for like $8.50. If I did not already have 2 copies I would bid on it myself.

EDIT: I did not know you were in Denmark when I posted. That auction will not work for you. Sorry for the trouble of bringing it up.

  16. Re: Galactic Champions vs Everyone Else

Since we have not yet seen a write up for any of the powerful heroes of the champions universe I will say that the champions 3k team can beat any of the ones you mentioned, and most of the villains in the villains books currently printed, but there are a couple of "god" heroes within the champions universe, Rashindar and Ushas, as well as certain mystical contructs like Albion and beings like Hyperion. I can only assume those characters are at the galactic champions power levels. Hero Games has been very slow in giving us hero write ups over the last two years. I guess Hero Games does not really understand how much we want them.
