  1. Re: Superhero Images

That's Cool! What is your origin/powerset?

Technology Tanker, with Inv and Energy Melee.

Based on one of my first characters. I can't wait until I can get an energy trail to follow my flight path.

    :)

  2. Re: I made the GM cry....

As a GM, I have often been moved to tears. My players are brutes, destroying story lines with their . . . grumble . . . intelligence and experience. Phooey.

OTOH, one of my favorite memories from any game I ran was this: one of my players wanted to be a hit man. I allowed it, and RP'd the meeting with his employer. The employer advanced him money and weapons, and then gave him his target: another PC. An old friend from high school (in the game), as well. For five minutes, all he could do was sputter, "You bastard," over and over.

    Ah, music to my ears.

  3. Re: Has anyone played in a game like this...

We called them "Mutant Runs". You were you. There was an event. Now you're a super, or it's post-apocalypse, or what-have-you. Often, we didn't have actual write-ups, and it was all free-form.

Problem is, you have to have fairly good self-esteem to want to play yourself. Often, it's not as escapist as other genres.

  4. Re: What are the most annoying player habits!

I have to admit that my brother and I thought it was cool when we came up with a way to "save" an adventure and then go back to the "save" point. I'd say we were young and stupid, but it just happened a month ago, so only stupid counts. We got the idea from CRPGs, of course. Therefore . . . um . . . yeah, computer games are to blame! Yes!

  5. Re: Miniaturized Manufacturing Units?

It is the same author. He's also written Snow Crash' date=' a cybyerpunk(ish) novel with an interesting take on cyberspace. It also deals with couriers, the mafia, the development of language in ancient Sumeria, and pizza delivery. [u']The Diamond Age[/u] is set in the future of the Snow Crash world, although either can be read and enjoyed with no knowledge of the other.

I bought Quicksilver, but I'm having a hard time with it. I've read Snow Crash until I "loved it real" and had to buy another copy. Stephenson is awesome.

  6. Re: Stats for the original Champions team

I am a trivia buff. I love to know this stuff. Thanks for the info you've provided Maelstrom, I hope I wasn't sounding rabid fanboyish :D

Don't worry about it, dude. I just wanted it noted that (a) I was NOT an original Champion -- I got into it too late, and (B) I'm not anybody that anybody knows. I answered an ad in Games and Glass in Burlingame for a DnD assassin. It turned out to be Bruce's ad. I wound up in a Glen run, playing possibly the first ninja wannabee built in Champions. I was a real 17-year-old geek, and was probably more annoying than useful. I hung out with the Beresford crowd, and Tom (Rose) a lot, but the only folks I knew well were Tom, Bruce, and Kirby.

  7. Re: Stats for the original Champions team

Maelstrom' date=' would you happen to remember Gargoyle's powers? I've been told it was basically a flying brick set but his appearance being a bit exotic suggests something more, a hka or regen.[/quote']

Sorry, dude. That was 23 years ago, or so, and I barely remember the original MAELstrom build, or what I had for breakfast. Brick with an HKA, and OAF wings, I'm pretty sure. There was an argument at one time whether they could be removed . . .

  8. Re: Stats for the original Champions team

Since I don't know his real name, by process of elimination either Force, Mercenary, or Dove.

Unless Maelstrom's name is Stacy, in which case it would be Mind Maid.

I used to hang with, and even play chess with, Stacy's brother Kirby. I was up at Kirby's house a lot.

  9. Re: Stats for the original Champions team

    Who did you play?

    inquiering herogeeks want to know

Jeez, dude. I played a bunch of folks that never made the book. One of my villains was invited into the original Enemies, but since I knew he was a blatant Terminator rip-off, I declined. I knew a lot of these guys, but I didn't game with the Champions.

  10. Re: 100-point wonders

Actually, so far, I really like all of Acroyear's ideas, and they are fairly representative of the stuff that my players would come up with. As far as disadvantages go, I always considered the 100-point limitation as pretty nasty.

  11. Re: Reconciling Manga & Batman

I built my villain "Nihilist" as a martial artist with no maneuvers. At first. What she had was Transfer, with the limitation "Technique that was just used against her." She would introduce herself as "The Greatest Martial Artist in the World," rather hesitantly, and then as she threw the first, standard, punch, immediately be in possession of the other martial artist's best block -- which he no longer had. If there are two or more martial artists in the party, they would soon be reduced to fighting with simple punches and blocks against their most carefully crafted maneuvers . . .

  12. Anybody else do this? I've pulled this as a one-shot on every group I ever ran.

Build a superhero with no disadvantages.

Usually, I limited the powers to 6 DC.

Once, I wound up running a whole campaign on this premise. Working so hard on the characters, most of the players developed real affection for them.

  13. Re: Stats for the original Champions team

Marksman - skilled normal. Aged slowly, had good martial arts and a sonic rifle.

Flare - an energy projector, aged quickly (at least in the comic) created by neonazis had three evil siblings

    Rose - magic based mentalist

    Gargoyle - Winged Brick.

Goliath (called Giant in the comic due to legal issues with Marvel) - growth and a lightning bolt - got his powers from a harness made by Zues

    Icestar - Iceman clone

Each Champion was actually a player character. BTW, Rose also had a pink effect, and had (possibly the first) stun-only energy blast.

Aerocobra (I don't recall the spelling) was played by my friend Mike, and I think he was named after a helicopter. Bruce played The Marksman (and corrected you if you forgot 'the'), Tom played Rose, Glen played Icestar, and Gargoyle was actually copywritten by his owner. If you have the old blue book (1st Edition) they are all mentioned by name, but I don't want to out them here.

  14. Re: The Destroyer (Remo Williams)

I remember one my friend from high school (23 years ago) did -- hhka, and very high speed. Invisibility and some flight in contact with the surface. If you can get ahold of the Destroyer Companion, IIRC it had some discussion of what Remo could accomplish. I'd use an activation based on a Sinanju skill, to ensure proper breathing.
