  1. Here is a DERRINGER (!) chambered in .45-70.

That hurts just watching it. It's like that guy at the range firing the handcannon, whose barrel ends up nearly pointing behind him, who turns to you and says: "You wanna give it a try?" Nah, I'm good.

    ST Kinetics SAR-21

JUST saw this gun in a movie and was wondering what it was. Thanks. =)

  2. Are you sure you aren't thinking of the Krag-Jorgenson? That used a single side feed magazine, but it predated the Garand.

The johnson rifle and LMG were interesting.   Apparently worked better than I would have guessed a recoil operated rifle would work.

Okay, I'm going off memory and images and a brief search, and I believe it was the Johnson rifle I was referring to. I only read about it in a magazine, if I remember right, and I remember thinking it was a neat idea and wondered about it briefly. I believe this is an image of it:

  3. ...hopefully you're going to include the small arms, probably more important to PCs than all the heavy gear they're talking about now. =)

Lots of fascinating stuff, should also include some of the gear that was not adopted by the militaries but were interesting so that players can have something unique. I seem to remember that there was an additional rifle design that competed against the garand that had single side feed into the magazine and some other neat little options. I'm sure there's lots of examples of that somewhere that I am far too lazy to look up right now.

  4. Uzumaki, the japanese name for the mystical swirl symbol (I can't think of the dang name right now... a center-point with a single circular line progressing out from it...), with abilities and a look that centers on that swirl resulting in torque, pulling force, pushing force, and some seeming relation to the idea of a black hole. To be honest, no good ideas on how to depict that. =)

  5. Okay, so after a long hiatus away from the boards, it is interesting to see this up again. Since this is for art, I am less about telling the story and more about representing some visual aspect. As I am not an artist, I will refrain from being too specific on imagery.

Zero Coefficient, an inventor of a substance with zero friction coefficient. It does not adhere to anything. This is more in-line with a Batman level of hero. He moves using this frictionless substance bonded into a suit. The suit has various pads on it to create actual friction so he can use them as control and launching points. Combined with a series of movement enhancing devices, similar to batman grapples/spiderman launchers for cables that allow him to make tight turns, he is a sort of speedster. Add a mask to keep his face from peeling off, some vision enhancing goggles with accompanying computer strapped to his back, and a few armored bits to use for his attacks/defense and it makes for an interesting visual, I think.

Engine, a behemoth in an armored suit. Rather than slick lines and LED lit strips, Engine is a giant armored suit with all the finesse of a charging rhinocerous. Black smoke spewing out of smoke-stacks, revving red hot pipes and lots of hydraulics. While Tony Stark might be slick and highly technological, Engine is exactly the opposite, a culmination of advances in the most reliable and hard wearing work machines, Engine is a whole other kind of hero. Blue collar, practical, and maybe a little ugly... but gets the job done. I see something more a cross between a bulldozer and a battlemech, not quite enormous, but pretty big for an armor type superhero.

I believe I presented these ideas before, a long time ago. Still heroes I haven't had a chance to play yet. =)

  6. The original Shadowrun setting has always been one of my top ten must PLAY RPG's.

I GM'ed Shadowrun off and on for 10yrs, but only played a total of 16 sessions as a PLAYER. I know many Shadowrun Gamers with the same experience.

Everyone wants to PLAY, bit few want to GM.

I maintained a list of people who wanted to play Shadowrun in Vancouver. It topped 110 in just 3yrs. Not a lot of GM's. The Dumpshock and Vancouver Gaming Guild Forums.

I think Shadowrun has always been one of those games that is easy and fun to play but pretty difficult to GM becuase of the vast amount of ground you need to cover. I have GMed Shadowrun a LOT, but have played very little. The thing is, seems like with every edition there is one section that I just cannot keep in my head. The most recent two editions, the whole matrix thing was beyond my ability to remember it all. I would read the section, run it fine for a couple of sessions, and poof, it was gone again. Read it again, run it some more, etc. etc. ad infinitum. Got a bit tiring. Not sure why... 2nd and 3rd it was magic.

It's basically the D&D of science fiction gaming. It has everything so has wide appeal. The video games can only be helping it, which is good. Funny thing is, I personally got into Shadowrun because no one would play Cyberpunk with me, but when I mentioned the Shadowrun book people perked up. In the end, I like Shadowrun as well, so it's not too much of a loss.

    And, getting back on topic...

    A Champions game... sort of.

Josh, our semi-psychic duplicator/summoner/clone maker: Hey, you ever heard of "The Stranger?"

Linette, our elastic former cheerleader: Ewwww...

    Josh: No, not that...

    Linette: *smiling* *arched eyebrow*

Josh: ...I duplicate, I don't need to sit on my hand.

    Linette: EEEEWWWW...

The M-F'ing Dragon of the West, B****!  :  I BLAST IT!

    GM: ...the little girl?

The M-F'ing Dragon of the West, B****! : That ain't no little girl, holding a physics book in the middle of the street like that...

GM: Did you just MIB me?

    The M-F'ing Dragon of the West, B****! :  YEA-UH!

  7. Surely it has a setting to allow you to give your adversary both barrels?

This is where I'm confused... Isn't that technically illegal if more than one round can be touched off at once? I'm not sure, the double 1911 makes me think not... I dunno.

I would love the ability to touch both off at once. I imagine the recoil would be significant. The one-two punch seems useful.

  8. Double barreled bullpup shotgun. Looks like someone saw the KSG and decided it would be better with two barrels...

Fires one barrel and then the other with another trigger press and then you rack it for two more. Seems interesting, though bulky, but not really that much more than a KSG, I suppose, besides the weight. I'd say good game gun, perhaps good HD gun. Funky. =)

  9. Get the stainless, then Cerakote with a blue. Not as nice as bluing, but a lot tougher and less likely to corrode.

I wish I could have bought a Medusa, I don't know how well they really worked, though. If it worked, the ultimate post apocalypse gun!

I want the finish more than the corrosion resistance. I have a lot of hard wearing guns, would like one that could be both pretty as high polish blueing and as wear resistant as melinite or however that's spelled.

Medusa sounded cool. Only read about it, never seen one in person. Supposedly charter has one that is a little similar (9mm, .38/.357 all in one with no moon clips needed) but I haven't checked that or either. Might be worth it if you're interested.

  10. I believe there have been a few of those 9mm revolvers, from the oddball Medusa (?) to several moon-clip 9mm revolvers. If that's the 5" barreled version like their 627, in an N-frame, I would love one of those as an 8-shot revolver, right after the actualy 627 if they ever make it in blue rather than stainless. =) Had a chance at 627 in stainless, but when I pulled off the weirdest black crud off of it, I didn' thave a lot of confidence in the last owner to have taken care of it. Looked like something you would see in a horror movie... yuck. I kind of love/hate the barrels on those. In one sense, nicely done, seems kind of slick, but I like round instead of squared on a nicely rounded piece like that. Great basis for a game gun and for real life!

The wife has agreed that we need a pair of his/hers revolvers at some point. Just have to figure out the what, how, and when. =) I'd like something fancy that I can still shoot. They'll take the place of wedding rings we never wear.

  11. I believe that even much less powerful revolvers can sever fingers too close to th cylinder gap. When I was a kid I was told by my hunters safety instructor that even a .22 lr can do it. Funniest thing, I have never tested it. Maybe I will take a hot dog out next time I shoot my revolver...

OMG, film that. Sounds hilarious. I've heard of injuries from that but not severed fingers. Sounds possible, I suppose. *shrug* Havent a clue.

If I could afford a Customs revved, I would probably go with a .50 special or some similar boomer. I don't need or really want a handgun generating 3000ft-lbs...

Yeah, I'd likely use the specials if I were going to shoot it regularly. I don't really travel in areas with animals large enough that I'd need that cannon to protect myself, and I don't handgun hunt (or hunt much at all, for that matter). I just think it looks neat, has a certain appeal in it's uniqueness, and if I could ever afford it, I would love to make it into something even more unique and interesting. Perhaps a less goofy looking compensator, perhaps a new finish of some sort, maybe even some engraving and inlay of some kind. *shrug* A vault queen, really. All I really "need" is a decent all-around style rifle to complete the Useful portion of my firearms collection. The rest is all gravy and dreams.

  12. Our Shadowrun game, which just started. Duke is the human Arcane Investigator. Viking is a Troll Physical Adept. Ulvar is a dwarf street samurai. We are escorting a wageslave for extraction out of the building... our group is not very subtle, but we're trying... we had a plan this time!

Duke (arcane detective): Is this the same guard we bribed?

GM: He does not look like the same guy.

Duke: crud. I cast invisibility on myself and go around him to start picking the mag-lock.

Viking: "Hey bro, how's it going?"

Guard: "Okay. Why are you back here?"

Ulvar: "We're kind of lost. Where's the soycaf place?"

    Guard: *points* Over there.

Ulvar: "Uh... can you show me where?"

    Guard: *points* Right there.

Ulvar: "Yeah, I'm kind of bad with directions..."

Guard: *points* It's literally right there. You can see it from here.

Duke: Just knock him out or something. We are so bad at this.

Viking: Pulls his helmet, styled like one out of the trids, with spaces for his large horns, out of his coat and puts it on.

    Guard: "What are you..."

    *headbutt* *unconciousness*

Duke:  "..and there goes all of our chances at subtlety. The helmet? Really?"

Viking: "Hey, I really like this helmet. It looks cool."

  13. TIL that when firing a S&W .500 revolver, the blast escaping from the cylinder/barrel gap can, and has, severed nearby fingers.

Yeesh. I read today that it is still more comfortable to shoot than the 329 PD scandium frame .44 Magnum. =) I kind of want one of the 4-5" barreled .500 S&W Magnums... but only if I come across it at a pretty reasonable price from someone trying to dump it. =) I don't think I could afford to shoot it much, even if I were so inclined. It's kind of like one of those gold desert eagles. I wouldn't mind owning one for the neat factor, but I wouldn't pay the kind of prices they are commanding right now. But what is more interesting is the new factory ported/muzzle braked one in .50 AE which is supposedly much easier to shoot. *shrug*

  14.

So while your ecoterrorists might want to claim an innocuous title and call themselves something harmless, it's likely that the press would come up with its own label, with more menace. Wastelanders, Malignant Mob, Blight Brigade: What would Fox News call them?

    Liberals.

  15. Okay, not sure how serious you need them to be... but, and this is kind of a stupid idea, what if they are all relatively young, having met at one of those Youth United Nations types of events. During that event, some event granting them their powers (a new eco-friendly energy source that got goofed up somehow?) together. This power source has a certain aspect, let's say (and this is nonsensical science-sounding words rather than actual science) a power matrix using relational partical dynamics that scale exponentially or something that sounds smarter or viable. =)

The power source requires certain elements to be within a certain proximity to really work, and each of these members absorbs a certain type of it (or combination thereof) that gives them, individually, powers. However, only when they are together do they really manifest into something formidable as their combined elements power them up.

Thus, while still individuals, they are powered at a low level, but together they are much more... and thus a reason to stay together outside of their individual personalities. Now, being overall well meaning but still young and self-absorbed, they do both good (for their cause) and bad (needs and self-justification) while also just messing things up (young and dumb). They probably were pseudo-friends and had fun at the event as well, thus why they were hanging out in the first place, and having that level of acquaintance.

A name... In Justice is uttered ONCE, on the fly, without thinking through (this bringing up memories, anyone?) how it sounds put together... thus, they are labeled as a villain team, Injustice, by the media, whom they are woefully inadequate to correct but angry, creating strife and otherwise amongst them, leading to further acts leading down the path to villainy as circumstance and lack of perspective can lend itself.

Thus, while they do some pretty wrong stuff, your heroes kind of feel bad for them, too, while also being incredibly annoyed with them and wanting to stomp in their heads... and then help them. hehehe. It can be the ultimate in shaking your cane at the young people villains...

    Just some thoughts. =)

  16. No, they're actually projectile firing weapons, coilguns. But they utilize the "mass effect" of the game's title - they use an eezo (Element Zero) core to reduce the projectile's mass to virtually nothing, accelerate it as fast as the coil will send a near-massless object, then once it;s outside the effect field of the eezo, it regains it's original mass - without slowing down.

handgun and longarm versions aren't actually much more efficient than a regular rail or coilgun would be. Dreadnought-mounted spinal guns, on the other hand...

    you had me at "dreadnought"...

  17. Dang it, maybe I should just quit posting from my phone.

Kel tek ksg shotgun. In one case, they apparently had a vertical fore end grip attached to the rail. The grip was actually cracked, and came loose as the shooter was driving the action forward. Due to the short barrels and short overall length, his hand ended up in exactly the place you DON'T want it when firing a shotgun. Iirc, in the other case the user's hand slipped forward off the for end for the same result.

Apparently the manufacturer is now including some kind of a front end hand stop.

It would if not defeat the purpose, then at least weaken it, but a version could be made with a longer barrel and magazine tubes. Another option might be to increase the texture on the fore end to improve friction.

I think a thinner, lighter 20 ga would be interesting. But I realize I am odd...

Oh, and though it would be bulky and heavy, the design could be scaled up to use 40mms grenades, or the other grenades launcher rounds on the market. I don't think it could be bulkier than the revolver style currently in use.

That sounds like a very good idea.  It's easy to see how things could go awry with this bullpup pump action:

Sorry, I missed some posts... okay. I thought it had a bit of a lip on the fore-end to stop that, but any short weapon of that sort takes some awareness. The bottom rail is polymer, so some front handles with narrow gripping surfaces were breaking the fore-end. Not sure if they fixed that yet. Seems to me that if a vertical foregrip isn't your thing, one of those angled fore-end pieces by MagPul would be a better answer. Longer attachment surface, doesn't add too much vertical space, has a front lip, and you can even just grab the handle wholesale and rack that pellet gun briskly.

For vertical rails, I've heard it suggested that a metal rail be added to the normal one, but I've also seen a lot of vertical foregrips with a wider base worked just fine.

So the front rail is certainly an issue. Not sure why they would make that out of polymer, but keltec has always been that kind of company, in my very little experience with their firearms.
