  1. Re: Loyalty To Ziandwyrth

I have posted a character below, which you may find inspirational:

Not a Paladin of Ziandwyrth, or even a cleric, but a follower (indeed, a follower of my old Turakian Age campaign party's resident 'friendly necromancer', 'Etwas Anderes'), this woman/girl was decidedly odd.

Her tutor/master had a morbid fear of badgers (??!!), so she carried a cuddly stuffed badger around and waved it in his face whenever she thought he was being hard on her :eg::D. She also took great pleasure in seeing him humiliated - not actually seriously hurt (because she wanted to learn stuff off him and actually liked him).

She used to wear a mask to cover her face - her COM score relates to her face, not the rest of her body, which would probably equate to COM 14 or thereabouts... (and she wore figure-hugging, translucent dresses, for additional effect).

Take this Rep, brother, may it serve you well.

Now how about the way that the undead respond to a non-necromatic follower of a Red God like Ziandwyrth? I don't know why it's important to me to know, but it is. I picture him maybe having an influence over them making them stand still gaping and moaning at him while he tells them jokes that they don't get or respond to. (Talk about a dead audience... ba-dum BAH!)

Maybe I'm having waaaay too much fun with this concept.

  2. Re: Loyalty To Ziandwyrth

    Chaos, madness, humour and luck.

He sounds like a jester or a harlequin. A mad, laughing being who leaves confusion and turmoil in his wake. Humour is a pleasant thing but the laughter of a madman can be very threatening and disturbing. If you went that route then you could really freak people out by picking inappropriate things to laugh at.

He could just have an irrepressible sense of humour that never lets up. He'll take the piss out of the enemy even as he's carving them up.

Alternatively you could give him a theme. I created a priestess of the god of madness once who had seen earthly cheerleaders in a vision and so adapted the rather bizarre art of cheerleading into a form of worship and spellcasting. She only appeared in a single one off game but she did manage to start a cheerleading cult of Madness amongst a friendly tribe of local lizardmen.

If you really want to push the 'good' angle then I suppose he would have no respect for authority and would dedicate himself to destroying or weakening the forces of tyranny, this could mean anything from aiding rebels to kidnapping a tyrranical nobleman and putting him in the stocks or simply dropping creating a satirical song about a bad ruler. All this would be calculated to create the maximum amount of chaos while destroying evil.

Good stuff! Repped! The fact that he's a (classically stern, dour, tempermental) dwarf with actual humor could be humorous too... in an awkward overcompensating way.

  3. Re: Loyalty To Ziandwyrth

Why are you approaching this from that perspective in the first place?

I'm not really soliciting mechanics, it's more of a philosophical thread. I don't really need help in the 'how to do this' department... but thanks for your comments.

  4. Re: Loyalty To Ziandwyrth

hhe could be a loki type that way he'd be evil

Again, true... and I think that was Steve's intent, but the core of the issue is what would his priests and paladins be about and how would it fit into the common role-playing tropes?

In one light a 'Paladin of the Lord of Chaos' would be the classic 'Anti-Paladin' but in addition to the negative foil for a 'good paladin' there are elements here like luck and humor that might get one out of the mired old 'black armored death machine' archetype. At least as I'm thinking of it.

  5. Re: Loyalty To Ziandwyrth

    Very true...

As a matter of fact one of my favorite sayings is:

"If somebody falls down, and you don't laugh, then you weren't paying attention..."

And 'Good Humor' should be covered by Leche, the God of Dairy Products, anyway. (ba-dum BAH!)

  6. I was writing up a dwarven paladin to Ziandwyrth (TA Lord of Chaos, but also the god of luck, chaos, humor and madness) and I got on an interesting thought process surrounding how one would worship such a diety. He is considered an 'evil' god relative to the Blues and Grays, but how can the god of humor be 'evil'?

So would a priest of Ziandwyrth be like Jerry Seinfeld trying to say a Catholic Mass? I would expect goofing-off and even disrespect (roasting) of Ziandwyrth to be in order during the service. What a neat concept.

How would a Paladin of Ziandwyrth act? He would go about sowing and reaping chaos from law-abiding towns, no? How would the undead respond to his 'Turning' power? (I didn't even bother buying 'Turn Undead' for him.)

    It's fun to think about...

    Your thoughts?

  7. Re: A Self-Replicating Virus?

I've had this problem before too. How would you simulate 'Sticky' using strictly 'Trigger' rules? 'Sticky' seem redundant in this light.

I'm sure that you're already satisfied with your build but just let me throw in my two cents... As far as the virus goes, if it's mental maybe stat up a One-Mind/Hive enemy and have the Trigger activate a Mind Link, then you can assault the victim with Mind Control or whatever other nastiness you have going on in that awesomely creative head of yours. Over a relatively short amount of time you could have a good horde of zombie-followers that mimic a truer 'virus outbreak'. I don't have my books in front of me but Mind Link should allow you to do this, yes? No?

  8. Re: Is 5er Still On Its First Printing?

Actually, it just kept on going. It plunged right through the center of the Earth, popped out the other side, fell back in, popped out this side, fell back in, and so forth. It continued this back and forth until it eventually reached gravitational stasis in the core where it now rests, mucking about with the weather patterns that caused such this unusually cold and weird winter.

Meanwhile, Al Gore won't stop calling me; he's mad that I made a liar out of him.

Aha, that explains why I was able to finally use some of my XPs to raise my DEX... Hero mechanics are now the center of the world!

    Thanks man!

  9. Re: THE ATLANTEAN AGE: What Do *You* Want To See?

I really like the concept of the recent cartoon StormHawks where they subtly ignore all forms of electronics in place of power crystals (much like you're suggeting with the mystical properties of the o-material).

Although electronic devices are curiously absent, they still have advanced mechanics, anti-grav, motorized vehicles and power-gem-enhanced weapons. There's monsters to battle, bad guys to thwart and a dark empress bent on destroying the status quo.

I would like to see an 'advanced mechanics-without electronics' concept built in, or at least a side note as to the potential. Maybe you're going in a different direction but I can also see application to this in the other Fantasy Hero realms, like as a specialty for gnomes for example.

  10. Re: Soul Calibur

So my buddy brought over his PS2 the other day and we were playing Soul Calibur. Basically a straight-up Street Fighter-type fight game with a pretty detailed and intricate backstory. As we were playing (I am button-masher supreme!!!!) we kept commenting on how this would make a cool RPG. A group of heroes combing the world for the cursed sword -- some to try to destroy it forever; others to claim it for their own.

But that's about as far as we got. Neither of us are up to starting a new game, but who knows? Maybe in the future...

I call Cervantes! (of course I haven't played since the first Soul Caliber...)

My friend used to be Siegfried with his over-phallic sword and I would drive him insane by using Cervantes' double-sword button-mash moves that I had no idea how to repeat. Good times... good times... good rpg? I'll let the jury decide.

  11. Re: Turakian Age's Henotheism

In TA book, it clarify that High Faith is "henotheistic religion" where all people worship all gods, all deities, without selecting one in particular.

like a monotheistic religion but with "different deities" in lieu of a single allmighty god

reading here and there i found a review (don't remember if ghost_angel one or not) saying "religion is like monotheism where a full pantheon of deities is worshipped"

    now, i'm not a religion expert nor i whanna start a flame;

but i googled a little (well... wikied a little :D ) and this is what wikipedia says about henotheism

to help you lazy (yes, me too are lazy :D ) i quote it:

«Henotheism (Greek εἷς θεός heis theos "one god") is a term coined by Max Müller, to mean devotion to a single "God" while accepting the existence of other gods»

this seems to me the opposite of High Faith...

so, it's me that misunderstood what book says, or what Henotheism means, or just High Faith is not henotheistic?

I don't think that it's 'inaccurate' to call it 'henotheism'. Priests and people tend to select a favorite patron diety to worship without discrediting or insulting the others. For example, druids worship Alamandre without ignoring Hornbrek, Bandaro or Kilburn's influences over nature. So the 'other gods' aren't just 'accepted', they're revered. Most priests and commoners just happen to favor one above the others (usually with a reason... sailors for example would tend to worship Saaltus). Sorry if I got my gods mixed up, I'm going off of memory here.

Of course, it seems that this religeous methodology was also displayed by the ancient Romans and Greeks (as you probably well know, my good Dr, joining us from Rome).

  12. Re: End Of Year Blowout Sale!

Nothing' date=' yet. Mail to Puerto Rico sometimes takes forever. What with this being Christmas season, and I'm guessing the HERO store uses the cheapest rates (and that is NOT, in any way, a complaint... it's free for me, so I HOPE they use the cheapest possible rate!), I might not be getting them until after Christmas, which would make me sad. Especially since I was hoping to get FH and Tuala Morn before this Saturday; I plan to run a Tuala Morn game for my daughters, as a Christmas present.[/quote']

Don't despair Tonio... check out the 'Links' and 'Free Stuff' on the homepage, I think you might be able to scavenge enough how-to material and campaign ideas to at least get started! Surbrook's stuff has some very detailed materials that would help in case your books don't arrive on time. Check it out!

  13. Re: Laser Gunship Revealed

What would be the beam's diameter? Seems like there would need to be a rastering attack of pulses forming a pattern... much like using an eraser to wipe out pencil marks on a page. The power would have to be impressive to effectively melt anything in the 'pass-by window' that the plane's velocity would have. The whole method of flying these lasers in might have to be reconsidered. Obviously the unit is currently too heavy for a helicopter, but that would be a perfect delivery vector. Sorry, just thinking too loud, I really want to see this thing in action though!

    No collateral damage = good

Too much time spent on destroying a single target = not so good

Hitting the gas tanks of vehicles would give the same collateral damage as a grenade or maybe even a bomb. Punching holes in defenses would be good, but as an offensive weapon the laser might be impractical.

Maybe I'm thinking about it too hard... you can take the boy out of the physics field but you can't take the physics out of the boy. ;)

  14. Re: End Of Year Blowout Sale!

    Enchanted Items... check

    Ultimate Energy Projector... check

    Post-Apocalyptic Hero... check

It's like I got EI for free! And I'll get a bonus book as well. KA-CHING and MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ME! (...yes I said the MC words, so sue me).

Have a Holly-Jolly Christmas in fact!

  15. Re: Genie

    *bangs head repeatedly*

Of course, the most obvious solution, Summon.

    I'll give it a look.

And yes, I know Independent is risky. I'm not doing it for the points, I'm doing it because it's a GENIE.

And I'll have other tools. A 'spirit bound into a ring' schtick for Armor purposes, for one.

I'd only be able to do the last if I were the genie, which would suck.

Hum. Do you think arguing that "Specific Being" would reasonably be +0 rather than +1? I can't genuinely see any advantage in it.

With Amicable +1 and no END, is all I have to do to get more services is order him to be dismissed and then resummon him as often as I please? Assuming I don't take Charges.

Specific Being should be a +1, if not then you could potentially pull any air-elemental out of that bottle... but that could be fun as well (for the GM anyway)!

  16. Re: Genie

Sounds like you might want to re-consider Summon instead. Personally I wouldn't allow Limitations on a Perq, but I can't find any rulings against it (I didn't look too hard). I would be concerned with putting all of my points into this Independent Focus and then finding that the first band of brigands that I came across being relentless to deprive me of it... and we all know how popular brigands are in the typical Fantasy setting.

YMMV, but just things to consider.

Summon also gives you the advantage to increase the 'Loyalty' ranking of the Genie, whereas Followers (like all Perqs) tend to come and go as they please. If you order the Genie to do something that he is opposed to doing, not in the mood to do, or even willing to do for his own personal gain then you'll have to Persuade or Bribe him to get it done. This could be overcome with a Disad 'Slavishly Loyal to [Character]' though. In essence, though, maybe you should consider building the Genie as the primary character and the 'weaker character' as the 'Follower', it might make a lot more sense on paper and you wouldn't have to deal with these issues. But be careful, since the 'weaker' Follower could change roles depending on who held the bottle. You could tidy this up with a specific Character name with regards to the Loyalty Disad.

  17. Re: Falling Asleep While On Watch

Going back to a previous edition...

Greg Porter's article "Death in the Great Outdoors" from Adventurer's Club #13 had a person needing REC/24 hours of sleep per night. Each night without enough sleep drained 1 EGO, INT, and PRE.

The character also needed to make an EGO roll to not be distracted while doing something repetitive or boring, with failure by two or more meaning the character fell asleep.

 We have a winner! Repped and I owe you another for the research. I knew it had to be somewhere in the Hero literature.

    Nice job!

  18. Re: Falling Asleep While On Watch

I would have to agree with EGO being involved. No matter how tired, you can stay awake on duty if you don't let yourself sit down/lean on something. From personal experience, it was a battle of mind over body, staying on your feet and moving, keeping your mind active on anything other than how nice all your sleeping friends look...

Con roll complimentary to an EGO roll is probably how I'd do it. With +/-'s depending on the hours awake/previous day's activity.

For heroic level, working in LTE, maybe something like EGO - 5 + (END/5). That way, the more LTE you have taken off, the less you have to work off that -5. With a Con roll being complimentary.

Prepare to be my test subject for this mechanic, Lieutenant!

  19. Re: Falling Asleep While On Watch

Maybe EGO is complimentary to a CON Roll.

You could also do a BODY Roll - can your body just physically keep going?

BODY may be a good one too, but it's another static stat roll. It would probably be easier just to do something like a EGO Roll + CON complimentary roll and then make a modifications chart for longevity and circumstantial penalties.

  20. Re: Falling Asleep While On Watch

There are foolproof ways of staying awake' date=' but they pretty much take an EGO roll to inflict on yourself. And to remember to do it.[/quote']

I suppose you're right. People who are trained to keep watch find a way to get into the proper mindset. That should be a Talent in and of itself, maybe a step-up from Lightsleep.

BUT then there's the majority who isn't as trained to keep themselves awake...

Oh, I'd like to hear what methods you are referring to!
