  1. Re: The Golden Age Recruitment Drive

My favourite high tech Golden Age character is Air Wave.

His main piece of high tech equipment was - a mobile phone.

Interesting, I was thinking about a riff on that idea, a guy named Soundwave who had a mobile radar array and a megaphone in his headset.

  2. Re: Looking for Time Powers & How to do them

you can "Look" into the near future for interesting effects, most obviously OCV or DCV levels, or more general levels, representing taking extra time with a task (while the rest of the world moves at a normal rate through time, you can pause to figure things out).

Invisibility vs a small number of people, FX seeing the future to know where they're loking, and being somewhere else.

EB indirect, by pausing time, placing a large object over someone's head, going back to your start position, and starting time again. Hilarity ensues.

Transforms of a minor variety (clothed person to unclothed person, broken weapon to fixed weapon and vice-versa) by stopping time and performing simple tasks while the rest of the world waits for you in suspended animation.

Teleportation (stop time, walk to where you're going, restart time)

    Life support versus aging

Luck, representing the uncanny ability to take a do-over periodically.

Desolid or DR by pulling yourself slightly out of phase with the timestream.

Really, most any power can have a temporal SFX.

  3. Re: The Golden Age Recruitment Drive

Some ideas (and feel free to borrow, since they are all derivative, homage or theft anyway):

A superhero who takes various-colored pills to give him various types of super-powers (but only for a short time)

    A robotic or clockwork archer

A hero possessed of a powerful gem which shoots multi-colored rays, each with a different effect

A superhero with a colonial theme, who carries a mystic lantern...

An inventor who invents an invisibility device

A kid sidekick with tons of combat luck

A spirit from Heaven masquerading as a man or woman in search of justice

A woman transformed by a mystic ritual which gives her the ability to (OIHID) assume a mighty physical form, but only for a short time each day

A mystery-man who is an expert motorcyclist and daredevil

A cowboy who uses a rope instead of guns.

I'm retrofitting a couple of my toons to fit the campaign criteria. I do not think I will play, but I might submit them to you to use as NPCs or building blocks for adventures.

  4. Re: Mind swapping

Maybe it's just me' date=' but I really hate using Transform for anything other than actually changing one thing into another. It just bugs me. Transform should not be the replacement for every other Power. I appreciate the suggestion; the Transform thing is just a pet peeve.[/quote']

Well, then go with XDM: Useable as an attack, and simultaneously (+1 1/4): You and target into a dimension where you have swapped bodies.

I know it's cheesy, but that's what happens when you stop feeding your pet peeves.

  5. Re: Who is Mister Mayhem?

A neat luck power would be to give him like, +8 overall levels, to simulate being so incredibly lucky...

Also, you could give him a big EB vs PD, Indirect (+1/2) simulating things collapsing/falling on the PCs.

And don't forget all the PCs hunteds who all happen to show up at the same time...

  6. This is my Buck Rogers-Meets-Hawkman character. Yet to have a chance to play him, but he seems like fun. Criticism welcome.

    Captain Starlight

    Background:

Peter Starr, a member of the Science Corps, was a dashing alien who cam to Earth some 30 years ago to track down some interstellar villains. Unfortunately, his spaceship crashed somewhere in the Midwest and he was stranded here. Luckily though, he was well-versed in human culture by his superiors before undertaking this mission, and was easily able to get a job at the local Midwest University as an astronomer while he rebuilt his damaged craft.

In time, he took a wife, who died in childbirth. The child was sickly (possibly from the co-mingling of DNA between species), and would have died, had Dr. Starr built a fantastic device that "drew the very ultrascopic rays from the stars" and infused them into the infant. Andy, as the child was called grew to adulthood, finding it easy to excel in science due to his superior alien intellect and nightly lessons from his learned father. He was a strong boy too, although still very sickly, as he remains to this day.

As the years passed, the elder Starr taught the young man about Keldor, their homeworld; and the Science Corps. Andy decided he, too, wished to be considered for membership into the elite space patrol organization, and Peter taught him everything he needed to know. Peter and Andy even wove together a new kind of fabric to make Andy's Science Corps outfit out of! (Incidentally, Andy lives of of the stipend provided to him by patenting this new fabric, called Gammacloth-3).

Father and son worked shoulder-to-shoulder, rebuilding the advanced alien spacecraft bit by bit in the old barn near the main telescope. On the eve of the elder Starr's test flight, Andy was in town getting some souveniers to show the people of Keldor. A giant explosion rocked the observatory! Andy dashed behind a building, donned his Science Corps outfit, and flew to investigate.

Scant moments before he arrived, the spacecraft took off! In the old barn, his father laid dying, obviously the result of a nefarious attack. Peter told his son, "It-it was Gorlo, one of the criminals I tracked to Earth many years ago. He must have been tracking our progress, waiting for his chance to strike. You are now Captain Starlight. You must prove yourself to be a worthy hero! Go get that man, and put him under arrest- for vandalism and grand theft spaceship!"

Andy easily overtook the spacecraft, opened the hatch, and flew inside. He grabbed Gorlo (a hideous beast- it's hard to say how he survived unnoticed for 30 years) in one powerful hand, and ripped the dashboard (!) out with the other, tossing it to the Earth below. He said, "If you want Father's spacecraft so badly, you can have it!" With this, he flew off. The rocket ship careened into space, doubtless killing its only passenger, who screamed all the way to his doom.

    Description:

In his secret identity, Andy Starr is a tall, slender man with bookish glasses, who smokes a pipe (to make him look more professorial). He wears checked shirts, and blazers with patches on the elbows. His shoes usually show signs of wear.

As Captain Starlight, his costume is red, white, and blue. His chest and cape are blue, emblazoned with white stars. His trunks and boots are red, and his boots also have three stars running down the outsides vertically. His face is covered with a 3/4 cowl mask of blue. Because of his outfit, he is often called "The Star-Spangled Avenger" even though the stars signify those in the sky rather than those on the flag.

  7. Re: The UnMentalist...

You really ought to add a couple other powers: Entangle (paralyzing the nervous system), possibly with Continuous, and heart attack (RKA IPE NND Does Body Continuous). Again, not worrying about point caps, you can build these effectively and not overpowering.

And don't forget EB ALVD (mental defense) for a splitting headache effect...

  8. Re: Character Generator?

was using that random chargen roller, and I got a cool insect control guy. Cling, tunnelling, summon insects, some sort of ranged attack, and some added dex and a little armor. Seemed like there was a real intelligence behind it.

Then I lost that character while trying to post it here, and everything else has been garbage.

Ah well, not unlike what happens when I sit down to devise a new superhero.

  9. Re: A Thread for Random Musings

There was some place in Arizona that was supposed to be all historical and had a marker and a gift shop and everything, I can't even remember where it was, somewhere near Kingman I think. Anyway, it was about something that happened in 1876... where I come from, things that happened in 1876 are news, not history. I live in Massachusetts.

  10. Re: Musings on Random Musings

esus H Christ Vanguard, I'd trade my wife for this chick anyday. You have a seriously fcuked up woman there and you should run away screaming... but she's still better than the woman I love.

That's the thing about love, it's indiscriminant and it doesn't care who it hurts.

  11. Re: Why that costume

Out of my current crop of characters, I'm kind of partial to Lamplighter, who dresses right out of the American Revolution. He is a Green Lantern type, so his Power Lantern (an alien artifact, probably unique, but similar to a gaslight-style street lamp) was the genesis for the costume and theme idea.

Multiman wears a tabbard-cloak over a boiler suit, and a burgler-style mask. The tabbard of course has a large M on it. To some extent, this was inspired by Magneto's 1980s-era costume, back when he was leading the X-Men.

Hellion is a mutant with an unattractive power. He can cover his body with chitinous brass-colored spike armor, and stretch his arms and legs. He's a speedbrick. No particular costume, since his entire body surface transforms when he turns on his power.

The Cavalier is my powersuit, and his armor is fairly standard- blue, grey and white, done in the Iron Man style (nothing too flashy). His helmet is insectile, however, with two large multifaceted translucent plates covering about 60% of it, and two short spiked antennae sweeping back from the crest. He chose blue and white since the ceramic materials in this kind of armor bake out white, and the metallic portions have a bluish hue. The grey parts are for the seals between the metal and ceramics, which are covered in grey heat-resistant plastic. In the beginning, he painted the armor red and black, but later on decided it was too much trouble and the default colors were "pleasing" enough.
