  1. Almost the only successful prosecutions of police are done by the Feds. The Feds can easily get and handle a venue change to get you out of the local courts and out of the glare and pressure of local press coverage. Federal prosecutors historically have their s**t together better than locals, and they've got deeper pockets than anyone short of multinational corporations.

If there's a federal civil rights violation here, or something that looks like pressure to violate federal medical privacy laws, then the federales could step in and nail a cop to the wall (example 1, example 2). Trouble is, it takes something adequately big for the feds to step in. Dunno if this makes it.

They usually take Hipaa pretty seriously...

  2. some cool stuff from an Istanbull museum of Ottoman Military...            http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2017/10/12/istanbul-military-museum-small-arms-ottoman-empire/

Apparently they destroyed their surplus guns, usually, rather than selling them on the commercial market.   Too bad, I would be interested in a 9.5 mm Turkish Mauser (iirc)   apparently the most "efficient" black powder cartridge...

  3. I just finished The Crippled God, 10th of 10 in the epic fantasy series The Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson. I started this series for the first time several years ago, and got to about book 7, which was the most recently available one, then swore off finishing the series until the last book was out, in case Erikson "did a Jordan" and popped his clogs before finishing his oeuvre. I finally got round to starting again a while back, some time after we actually acquired book 10 because I hadn't realised that it was done.

Really glad I did. Some of the best sword-and-sorcery fiction I've read. Sufficiently engaging that there was the occasional time that I had to take a break because it was all so intense. Laughter and tears; joy and despair. I have no idea how many characters get dealt with in such fascinating detail. Heroes and villains, and villains who are heroes... I'm a sucker for military fiction, and there's that in spadefuls, along with mystery and intrigue and world-shattering plots.

The background was, I'm given to understand, created as the setting for Ericson's GURPS game...

I have read a lot of them but I'm not sure exactly how many and I'd probably have to go back and reread the whole series. not that this is a problem but the time, oh the time...

  4. Okay, here's what I still have trouble grasping: what exactly is the problem the Republican party sees with Obamacare? I mean, apart from it having been instituted by Democrats. What are the substantive issues which they believe have to be corrected? Has anyone articulated them in a coherent manner? Or is it wholly dogma-driven?

Can anyone explain, or point me to a source that does? Rationally, I mean?

    I would be interested also...

  5. When they originally made it a felony, giving someone HIV was condemning them to death. Now it's condemning them to lifetime inconvenience, medical bills, and maybe a few years off the end. Maybe.

That's bad, but it isn't murder, and that's why it's still illegal, but not a felony.

If for some reason they cannot get the medication it is a death sentence. I believe the first article I saw indicated that that was for the deliberate infection

  6. Well, I put him on a "higher rung" solely because he does a small audience. (which peaked in the 80s, and probably has to be nearly gone by now)

Note: In any case, when he ran for President in 1988, he struck me (a 12 year old) as one of those guys who are probably sleazy in actuality that hides behind Christianity for his own benefit, think Bakker/Swaggart (course I can think of some like them in church congregations I have or still do attend)

I had respect for Billy Graham although I did not follow him. The rest of them I figure they're all bad.

  7. The Catalans aren't defending slavery. The South Carolina secession document was a gem.

FWIW, the current Spanish state has strong elements of continuity with Franco's regime.

Seems to me the European Union is supported several provinces breaking off from other countries outside of their Union

  8. Power has been knocked out in the entirety of Puerto Rico. The infrastructure may "never be the same" (and I don't know if it was that great to begin with).

maybe they will take the opportunity to install a more distributed renewable energy network?

SOrry, sorry, I will try to be serious.  :-(

  9. I'm reminded of a comedian who said, "I saw a guy park in a handicapped space, he got out of his car and was perfectly fine.  I figured I'd make an honest man out of him... so I ran him over."  After the laughter died down, he added, "Then his 90 year-old grandmother got out of the car and started beating me over the head with her cane."

I'm also reminded of my brother, who got a ticket for parking in a handicapped space at the mall.  He was incredibly upset, telling our mom, "I limped all the way in and all around the mall!"  Mind you, he wasn't hurt at all, he just figured that faking a limp should be good enough to qualify for handicapped parking.

I am always reminded of Joe Piscopoe's (whatever happened to him?) "Vermin" character from Johny Dangerously"     "I am disabled.  I'm Psychotic!"

  10. I am really frustrated though.  My dad and I bought a beautiful mold MiHec 45 270 SAA with hollow point pins and I can't find it.   I hope none of my dad's "helpers" wandered it off.  I can't find his older molds, or his good melting pots either.   HOPEFULLY they just ended up placed somewhere odd...

    I found lots of lead...

His direct helpers seem to either know or care nothing about casting, but there are a few bucks involved, so there is always a chance...

I was looking at the MiHec site again, his molds and the bullets they produce are works of art.

  11. IN local news, a pot shop employee eating in his car was kidnapped and murdered last week.   In a TV news interview, the killer confessed and stated he was having a very bad day, and originally just went over to beat the guy up because he was disrespectful to him....  so he killed him and stole the car, dumped the body, then the car.

I cannot even begin to understand the mindset.

THAT, imo, is a THUG.  I don't care what color, creed, or nationality someone is, if they think it is appropriate to assault, murder, rob, etc based on "being disrespectful" then they are a problem.  I know historically many of our upper crust would have dueled over kinds of disrespect, but...

  12. I've always felt that if someone wants to park in handicapped zones that badly, the logical thing to do would be to make them qualify for it. I understand kneecaps are easy to damage.

The only reason I did not "like" this is that I disapprove of assault and battery in principle.   Though sometimes the temptation is very strong...

  13. Please not Bon Jovi, please dear LOrd no.

I like a number of his songs quite a bit.  nowhere near all of them, but...

that is why there are so many different artists around.

Almost no one I know likes Flamenco, but I found out today my dad's caregiver does also...

  14. Play-lynching 8-year-olds in New Hampshire in 2017 A.D.:

I read about this last week...   of course no information on the bastards released as they are under-aged...

My rage level went up quite a bit...      I could easily see them getting preferential treatment.

  15. Sounds like a fun project. I expect there is a Lot of literature on forging and other industrial techniques, Heck personally I expect Maker Box tech to become the "go to " home loading solution in the next decade.

It looks like 3D printing doesn't have the Precision and smoothness I would need for the project so it would probably require CNC Machining to do the prototypes. This is one of the best images I found of the variations in his designs
