  1. Re: Villian Relocation

1.) An American agency gains the use of a world class mentalist who can track super criminals within the boundaries of the North American continent but not much further. Any non mind shielded crooks who want to go about their business unhindered must find new places to expand into.

2.) The US super scene has gotten too violent with the public accepting the most bloodthirsty vigilantes as popular heroes. Some of the local villains get out to the more restrained European countries.

3.) Until, or perhaps the E.E.C., have constructed a new containment facility to house convicted super criminals and research means of countering their powers. The US has lent several medium risk offenders for study. Inevitably there is an breakout with the offender liberating as many fellow prisoners in order to maximize the chaos. Local crime figures offer support to the escapees in exchange for their talents.

4.) Someone is bringing in American super criminals for a big job, Eurostar is planning on seizing a former Warsaw pact country and declaring sovereignty.

5.) Teleios has been collecting samples of superhuman DNA and cloning copies for study. Something goes wrong and his many specimen are released onto the streets of a European city.

  2. Re: Mystic Masters campaign (old vs. new)

I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts about how the old "Mystic Masters" rules compare to the newer way of handling magic in Champions. I'm mainly thinking about how in the old MM book, they recommended making all EGO-based powers have x2 effect. In the 5th edition, that idea doesn't seem to be used.

Any thoughts on that? Which do you like better? I'm a huge comic-book magic fan, and I'm thinking of running a mystic campaign. I just ordered the Ultimate Mystic and the Mystic World and so forth, but I'm very curious to see what everyone else things of how things are done now compared to the old MM way.

Of course now the PCs have an extra hundred points to build on. I considered doing it the former way but decided the extra points more than made up the difference. Otherwise when you have the Mystics run up against non Mystic/Mentalist villains it is a non event.

(I do think that using Duplication to handle astral forms works very well' date=' though I haven't delved into it yet.)[/quote']

All of my PCs have done it this way and it works well aside from the usual problems of having characters who can evade physical barriers. If I could offer any advice, be very aware of how your players are spending their points. An active point cap helps reign them in but they gain so mich variability with a power pool that it can be hard to keep them challenged.

I chose to limit the initial magic power pools to 15-30 active points with a maximum of 12- magic skill so that the players would buy fixed primary powers but also have a super mage's flexibility, eventually.

One of the other advantages to a MM campaign is that we now have a nice selection of sourcebooks:

    Demon

    Vibora Bay

    Viper- some of it anyway

Until-(just barely) My campaign is an elaboration upon Project Hermes

Champions Worldwide- a number of magic heroes and villains

    CKC

I still keep going back to Mystic Masters for inspiration though, it just seems to capture the fun and spirit.

PS- You've probably long since seen these but here is a link to MM's author Allen Varney's campaign logs in case you haven't

  3. Re: It seemed like such a good idea...

Twenty years later I can see the glaring mistakes I made, but I still understand what I was trying for with that character. Has this happened to you? Have you taken a great and noble concept and found that the character simply doesn't translate into gameable material?

Darren Watts succesfully ran this type of character. He is in Champions 3000, named Bulletproof. So it can be done but I'd think you would need a understanding GM.

As to trying to run a concept that uneasily translates to a game, I'm going through that right now but from the GM side. One of players detests physical violence and wants to play a character with cupid-like love powers, the other PCs take every chance to slap around the poor lovesick dopes.

  4. Re: That flat cardboard tank doesn't look threatening...

I've found Goodwill and other thrift stoes to be good sources for scale vehicles and scenery, mostly from model train sets.

For Nazis, this won't help much, I repainted some heroclix.

For officers and SS- the Gotham PD, they look very good when redone in grey with a few details painted on.

  5. Re: Who would you recreate?

Kid Flash, a slacker dilettante who unexpectedly inherits his fathers Fortune 500 multinational and discovers his super hq full of gadgets. Kind of a super kid Rock or Spiderman if he hadn't had his "With great power..." moment or perhaps a cross between Iron Man and Pimp my Ride.

  6. Re: Costume fixation (Get your mind out of the gutter)

Captain Marvel, the Kree one, and his son have always worked for me. Vindicator and Captain America are my runner ups, one look and you've got the concept.

Many of the designs of artist Mark Bagley, who did the Thunderbolt's look and later Strikeforce Morituri, are very good.

The silver age Green Lanterns and Flash are timeless classics.

  7. Re: When (that super hero) won you over

Similar to Marketeer's pick, the finale to the Roger Stern, John Byrne Captain America story where in he fights Brother Blood, (Baron Blood, sorry), in modern Britain.

The reluctance to kill, even in so extreme a situation, just slammed home for me. It made me take code vs killing much more seriously as a disad and caused a change in the character of many of my pcs from then on.

  10. Re: Champions Battleground stories

Has anyone used the locales for other scenarios or built on the scenarios from the book in interesting ways? It'd be nice to hear how GMs have gotten extra value out of this book.

One of my players began a Teen Champions campaign in september. The Mall has pretty much been the HQ of the pcs as well as the sight of most of the fights.

  11. Re: Champions Clix - Your HC Recipes

Thanks Redmenace - your recipes will prove invaluable!!!

You're right - the Sunfire fig's head would be perfect for Green Dragon. Unfortunately I was not aware of this at the time and made mine from green stuff - first time I ever "modded" a figure and also the first time I'd ever used green stuff.

My first Champs clix was Green Dragon as well, made from a DC Nightwing. Care to post a pic of you version?

I also did a repaint of Arashi for Shadowdragon - worked out OK considering it's the first fig I ever painted.

    I'd like to see it.

Also thinking using the Selene figure and just repainting for Howler...

I'd think that would work well. The Super Woman from the Legacy DC set, while a bit large is almost perfect as is and has a flight base,

A question/challenge for you - any ideas on recipes for the old 4th ed version of Menton and current 5th ed version of Rakasha?http://

    Take it easy.

  12. Re: Champions Clix - Your HC Recipes

Sunfire, in the next Marvel clix set, has a almost perfect GD mask.

    http://www.wizkidsgames.com/heroclix/marvel/figuregallery.asp?unitid=8870

Here is a list of proposed conversions, it's a bit dated as several new sets have come out since.

Black Diamond, a cheetah body with the tail snipped off, a little sanding on the legs and a head swap with a Mage knight figure of a Andrezian Diver (?). As a side note, I think the Cheetah figure is the best basic female template Wizkids has produced to date, I use it a lot.

    Unity, more or less

Quasar, A Human torch, Marvel clix with flames sanded down, maybe a head repositioned and putty hair sculpted on. Paint it black with a few speckled paint dots and maybe a little cloudy paint for a nebula.

Mentiac, as he is drawn not as per the write up, A Marvelclix Moleman body sans head and cape, add a head from Marvel clix Puppetman, clip the goggles off of a Indyclix Lobster Johnson or a DC Clix Starman. Add various holsters and gadgets from your bits box or take them off of the Marvel clix Taskmaster. Add a gun, preferably odd looking sci fi kind of piece.

El Picarro, Hat from a Marvel clix Scourge, Sword from a Marvel clix Corsair, body from a marvel Clix Ultimate Electro sans the lightning arcs, Hair will have to be sculpted in putty or possibly a DC Clix Nightwing's? Finally a cape from some clix.

    Dr.s Black and White,

Dr. Black, an Indyclix Boon with the Bo Staff removed and putty built up to give his right side some cloathing and an added on DC Clix Clayface cape.

Dr. White, Rogue isn't too far off but I'd reccomend a DC Clix Saturn Girl, she looks better against the Black figure I suggested above. The hair will need putty work as will the bandanna and finally a cape.

Myrmidon, Magneto helmet, will need some removal of material from top and sides, Indy Clix saurian trooper for lower body, Upper body sans head and hands from a MarvelUltimates clix Morlock, Hands from a DC Clix cobra fanatic, Spear made from small length of rigid wire and spear head fashioned from to Starman clix. The Lion shoulder fixture, well I'd say sculpt it or get a small Mageknight monster, carve off the lower face and upper head and sculpt on the main.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are some more, mostly from CKC

Here are the planned ones as thought through, or not, as i've concieved of them:

Defender, a mandroid upper body maybe a Nightwing lower body and Intergang agent head with modification.

Dr. Destroyer, Ultron body, clayface cape or perhaps indyclix Brom, head should be easy enough just sanding down a normal face from a Cobra Fanatic or Dr Fate. The chestplate and bracers would have to be sculpted.

Gravitar, Lady shiva body with modified putty hair and cape from some fig

Istvath V'han, Indyclix Tomo? tall demon geisha looking chr as a base fig. upper torso from Indyclix blond D&D looking female archer figure, see Bill Keyes' mod in the semi annual mod contest

Menton, Patch upper body with repositioned or replaced arm, Gotham police detective legs, Shield agent head with additional putty hair.

Takofanes nade from MK skeletons and or zombies

Warlord, mech warrior mech if one comes close

Warcry, thug from Infinity challenge with repaint

Dark seraph, Hawk body sans cape, hawkman wings, putty work for crown and face, no current plans on the other crowns, the new Mutant Mayhem Hulk would make a good basic figure

Eurostar, Fiacho no plan but shouldn't be too hard, durak, controller legs, thing torso, Blob arms and hands, bullseye head, Feurmacher and scorpia-see Terror Inc, mentalla, Dove for leviating or Jean grey for psi action pose, Ultra sonique klaw with Infinity Challenge thug head and putty, and accoutrements.(see bIll Keyes' versions of these characters as well as Grab.)

Grab, Boon from infinity clix maybe for Cheschire.

Psi, no plans but Psimon would look great made from a gambit, Hypnos, no idea but I like the look too much not to do one sometime, Lancer same, Medusa seems a near perfect Jean grey figure, Mindslayer, lower half of a Black canary is perfect, tormrnt just needs a basic super figure.

The Ultimates, Binder, Aim agent body, with Skrull Commander gun and fuel reservoir, Metropolis SCU helmet with mod?, Blackstar, Hawk again with mod and cape, Cyclone flying Parademon is a good start (also for Mach 1 or Hazard from Millenium City), Radium, Claw with sanding and a new arm, Slick no idea, Thunderboltm nightwing maybe

Ankylosaur, Collosus with extensive putty work on head and a scorpion tail. After the head is an easy mod and looks very nice on the battle mat.

Anubis, stock figure from some Warlords of Aegyptud set

Armadillo, really want one, but no real idea save a repaointed Hawk and i do that too often as is

Black harlequin, going with the Champs battleground look, joker with hair sanded down and putty jester's cap, base decorated with puppetman ff, penguin and Mech warrior soldiers.

Black Palladin, no plan but shouldn't be hard to find something

Blow Torch, 1st Marvel set standing Skrull with new head

    Brain Child, No plan

Bulldozer no plan but the grey hulk from Mutant Mayhem would be interesting.

Capatain Chronos no plan but could be fun to do, Intergang medic body, Blue Beetle head sanded down and helmet wings from a Hawkman maybe.

Cateran, Typhoid Maryl as a base with Ultimate Jean grey as a ahead donor

Cybermind, Ultron body with Electro head

Esper no plan but Con artist maybe

Fenris, Hawk pose is on the money

Firewing, Human Torch with added on flame hair and Hawkman or girl wings

    Gargantua, action Figure?

Herculan, no immediate idea but would be challenging

Holocaust, superman body, modified cyclops head?

    Hornet, no plan

Howler, Always liked her, scarlet witch maybe or the new Fire Star from Mutant Mayhem or Super woman from a recent DC set.

    lady Blue, Cheetah fig

Lazer, Checkmate fig with guns and new head

    Leech, Claw with Mods

    Lodestone, no plans

Mirage, Lexcorp security coat, Dr Fate body and Lexcorp power armor for head, with holo emitters on shoulders made from odd things on Braniacs back.

    MechAssassin, Shield from swat

Menagerie, Tigerlily from Indyclix with repositioned arms

Monster, The body and head of Scourge from the Marvel Ultimates with Sabretooth's arms and taloned hands, putty work to make arms look cloathed.

Ogre, no idea but I want one, Blue had a great looking Colossus conversion.

Foxbat, wolverine top half of head, riddler for bare face below the mask, Riddler body sans question mark for soliquizing or batman for action foxbat, Blue beetle's gun

Utility, Intergang Medic with putty work bandoleers, no idea for helmet but I want to look at some Warhammer 40K armoured troops for possibles.

    Terror Inc:

Proffesor Muerte, Black Panther body with central jewlry sanded down, body painted in silver then muscle groups outlined in black, head swapped with MK skeleton skull and cape's hood made from putty.

Scorpia, Simple repaint of Black Widow

Giganto, A thing with nose sanded down, putty work on face and build up the waist part of his trunks, repainted in gray, very simple but it works nicely.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry about not having an idea for Devastator, there might be a decent Mechwarrior clix.

  13. Re: This week on "Champions"...

The Profe$sionals, Season Premier, Following the overthrow of the Castro regime, the Mafia's superhumans are quietly escorted back to the states by the C.I.A. Before the Vegas team can learn of the N.Y. Mob's hit on their boss, they are attacked by the much larger East Coast team. In Las Vegas, Mr. Siegal's consiglieri, former Golden Age villain the Raven, begins plans for a bloody vendetta against the five families. Sham uncovers a New York vigilante's secret identity and informs him that he will now be working for them or facing the consequences.

  14. Re: Between Two Cities

L.A. and San Diego for most of the pre suggested reasons. Thats where I based my groups hangout on a decommisioned Oil drilling platform. There was also the issue that super bases always come under attack and the pcs wanted isolation to avoid spillover casualties.

In the Champions U., I'd also suggest Chicago and Millenium City or some thing similar with Hudson city, Vibora bay and or Plainesville.

  15. Re: Anyone combine Champs with Call of Cuthulu?

I had a Champion's 3D, dimention hopping campaign. The Anopheles/Horror world was going to be the basis of my Halloween adventure. One of the continuing themes of the campaign was that each world had it's own unique physics.

On the anopheles infested earth, ambient magic powered all superhuman abilities giving all the PCs an effective 0-end for any "organic" superpowers. Being heroic sorts, our guys went about thrashing the tough but beatable minion beasts that had brought civilization down.

What the players didn't know was that use of powers weakned the barriers between dimentions allowing the truly unbeatable monster Gods to pass through. Being a Lovecraft homage, I ended it on a real down note with everything going to hell with the final scene having the PCs find out they'd caused it.

As an aside, If you, or someone you know, subscribe to Pyramid, the Steve Jackson Games online gaming magazine, checkout the "Let the mythos power your super heroes campaign" article. It had some wicked ideas.

  16. Re: UNITY 2010: A New Champions Campaign

I've been catching up on this thread recently. Your initial write up was clear that China and Russia were different than the real worlds but the last recap seems to be showing the U.N. is very much so as well. They seem to have a lot more clout, operating without having to get one of the superpowers to fund and or supply military muscle.

Am I right in guessing that they are the power equivalent of a firstworld nation, atleast?

    PS good stories
