Re: 4th Ed. Veteran looking for advice on 5E
Hi all!I grew up with 3rd Ed/4th Ed Champions, so even though I haven't played in years, I jumped on the chance to grab the 5th Edition when I could, and I've been building up a library as opportunity permits . But I do have some questions for people more "actively" using 5E.
1) Which power level do you go with? The Low level (250 pt.) is what I'm used to as the base level in 4E. How does the new 350 pt. starting point work for you?
2) I've seen a lot of what I've come to term the "12d6 syndrome", in that the main attack always seems to be a straight 12DC attack for every starting character (60 STR, 12d6 EB, 6d6 NND) In your campaign, do you ever run into a problem of everyone basically being a walking 12-dice attack?
3) My old games always wound up having basically a 4-6 SPD rnage, with bricks beng low, martial artists being high. The new 5E poewr levels allow bricks to have that 5-6 SPD. Does that mean that Martial Artists will need to push 7-8 SPD? Have you run across the problem of bricks being as fast as your kung-fu master?

Howdy!
We found 350 was a touch high, so we used 300 the first campaign we did by 5th Ed. Later we felt more confidant, so we went with 350. Like other folx here said, it leads more to rounding out characters than building combat monsters, less the GM don't have good control.
We ain't seen to much of "12d6 syndrome" though that usually is the strendgth of the most powerful attack. Course, with all the Advs, Lims, and SFX, they don't feel all that much like they're the same.
With 350 points, 'bout every character is faster than with 250. If'n the GM keeps combat monsters from happening, there's still a range of SPDs so it's all good.

Re: WWYCD: Discovering the nature of reality?
Howdy!
All Threnody's powers are physically impossible in the real world, so she's got nothing but punchin' and kickin'. She don't carry, an' I've got me a pistol close to hand, so I don't think I've got too much to worry 'bout.
Anyway, Threnody'd want to find out al she could 'fore doin' anything.
Course, I'd mostly be like "Hell, when did I flip out? They got me in a padded room yet, or what?"
That, an' I'd really wanna get it on with such a hawt chick.

Re: WWYCD if their reflection suddenly winked at them?
Howdy!
Threnody'd yelp in surprise. That would bust the mirror.
After that, the investigation's gonna have it some probs, with the main piece of evidence gone like that.

Re: DOLPHINS! How would you GM them?
First I'd have to wait until dolphin language is deciphered, then I'd have to learn scuba diving, then I'd have to figure out what to use instead of dice (or buy a boat load of metal dice). Then there's minatures, maps, books,....THEN, I'd have to teach the blasted maniacs how to roleplay.
Frankly, I don't think it'd be worth it.
Repped for humor!

A volumetric hex is explicitly definedWhere, please? I'd like to add that there fact to my notes, but I'm gonna need to citation it.
as an hexagonal prism, two meters from flat side to opposing flat side, and two meters tall. It has a volume of 7 cubic meters.I hope that helps.
That there "7 cubic meters" is off by about 720 ml. About a fifth-of-booze too big, IOW.

Re: Map of Mongo redux

Kinda OT, but I just wanted to say that "Mongo Redux" sounds like a comic book villain.
Why yes, now that you all ask, I am crazy.

Man, you've got a terrific campaign going! Thanks for telling all about it.
I'm gonna rep you for this here recent-most post.

Re: Desintegrator Weapons
Say, could you folx help me out a little? What's this here "Feign Death" you keep on talking about?
All I see in the rules is Simulate Death, which is a Talent in the ol' Talents section or the rules. And that ain't no kinda Invisibility. Like it says:
This Talent allows a character to slow his metabolism down to the point where he appears completely dead.Well, yeah, it talks about a medical check-em-up might find out the feller's alive, and gives game-mechanics for plusses and minusses, but that don't make it Invisibility.
So since you all say there's a "Feign Death" that is some kinda Invisibility, could you tell me where you're reading it from?
Thanks.

Re: The Vigilance Society of America: Pulp Supers
This is very pulp. Love it!
BTW, why don't you put a thread on the Pulp Hero board, pointing to this thread? I'm sure the Pulpsters would dig it.

Re: The Saga of the Smiling Fox -- possible future convention event
In brief' date=' this game would tell the story of the Smiling Fox and his associates in their battle against the unrightful ruler of their land. But, unknown to that ruler and his minions, the Smiling Fox is not a specific individual hero, but rather anyone who wears the Smiling Fox mask which grants a number of abilities to its wearer. The idea would be that the mask is in the possession of a group of rebels who would be the player characters in the events.[/quote']Oooh, that there's a cool idea.
So, here's the set-up I'm thinking of. About 15 years ago, the evil Duke Duvelle overthrew and slaughtered most of the royal family with the aid of powerful allies among the other nobles.
Sounds like a really hiss-able villain. That's always good to have.
Unbeknownst to Duvelle, a servant of the Royal Family escaped with the baby Princess Amelita and that servant's family raised Amelita as one of her own. Amelita is now 16 years old and has begun to show the enhanced abilities of a royal -- so her adopted family has told her of her heritage and she sets out to join the rebels to regain her rightful place on the throne. So, after that somewhat lengthy intoduction, here are my questions to folks:
Does this sound like an interesting setting for a continuing convention game?
Yeppers.
What types of characters should be part of the group with Princess Amelita? I picture Amelita as primarily being a fighter type with her enhanced STR and DEX. I'd like to avoid stock D&D types if possible or at least provide a twist on them. Her kid sister who wants adventures too dangit! as she kept tellin' her folks. Her floks said no, but she snuck out anyway.
Or her brother, only his excuse is Amy needs protection.
Any thoughts on an interesting approach to magic for this game? It should be practical for a con game, but also allow for the creativity of players. I am thinking that there may be one or two magic wielders amongst the player characters.Any other thoughts and comments?
Thanks
Any thoughts on a simple flexible magic system to use for the game?
There's only 3, 4, 5, maybe 6 spells, but they each got Variable Special Effects. Thing is, it's a slow business to change the VSE.
You'd get yourself an EB/RKA, a HA/HKA, a Clairsentience (you'd hafta allow VSE to change which Sense), a Force Wall, and a Run usable as Flight (or vice versa), Few spells so the players can remember 'me easy, alterable so's inventiveness can be rewarded. I like, hope you do too.

Re: Desintegrator Weapons
...Suppress Body, Uncontrolled, usable on yourself only.
THAT'S how you build Feign Death in this system. Huh.
Or you could just go off an' buy the "Simulate Death" Talent.
If'n you think it's too weak (cause of allowing Paramedic rolls and all that), I'd say it's OK if'n you buy it two or three (or more, maybe) times, so's you can add up all the negatives and such.

Re: Spacecraft size
Howdy!
Sorry 'bout the double post. Boy, is my face red!
'Bout getting away from L4 and L5---I once heard an astronomer say it'd be like leaving one of the medium sized moons. He said Iapetus, if I recollect right. Wny ol' how, there's a good bit of "pull" towards them points, so it'll takea bit of doing to get away from them.
-
Re: Spacecraft size
One thing to ask yourself about:
Where's the ore being mined? Where's it being refined? Where are the bits being shaped? Where are the subassemblies being put together? Where's the ship being put together?
The more of that you do in high-grav places (Earth, Mars, Moon, L4, L5), the smaller the ships HAVE!! to be.
If you mine asteroids, refine in deep space (with big-ass mirrors), sub-assemble in deep space or high orbit, assemble in ditto, then they'll be big. But not able to land even on airless moons in they've got any mass to 'em.

Re: Stupid firearms question
Also' date=' the round likely [i']bulges[/i] from air-pressure inside. This is very bad for semi-/full-automati feeds. Could happen to shotgun rounds too.In a revolver, it'd go and make the bullets get stuck, so as you couldn't get 'em out. That wouldn't be good neither.
Ya know, bulgin' bullets wouldn't be load-in-able at all, would they? Good catch!

Re: Thought I understood MP, maybe I don't?
Howdy!
Here's the simple version:
The pool of a Multipower is Active Points to distribute among pre-made powers.
The pool of a VPP is Real Points to distribute among any-old powers ('less you've restricted the VPP).
The pool of a EC is how many points you take off 'en the Active Cost of the pre-made powers afore applying the Limitations.
Simple, right?

Re: Taser Cam
Saw an ad yesterday that Taser International now offers video camera attachments for Tasers. A great idea in RL' date=' as a defense against the ubiquitous [i']"I was just sitting there minding my own business when the mean officer zapped me for no reason"[/i] claims. (As well as increasing accountability if an officer does misuse one.) Anyway I got bored, so gamer-geek that I am I had to write it up (based on the Taser example on p262 of DC)Howdy!
This is going to be just soooo useful for something I'm fixing to do!
