  1. Re: Who are the top 5 most powerful characters in your Campaign.

Actually' date=' yes, there is a right answer: they are less powerful if and only if he says there history is different. *Which he is perfectly free to say*.[/quote']

Why would he need to, though? Your position, though not stated openly as such, seems to be that every GM is running a canon campaign by default. Without that premise, your argument has nothing to stand on.

If you have another premise from which it logically follows that each and every single GM must explicitly declare their campaign to be their campaign before it may differ from canon, you are perfectly free to say so ;)

  2. Re: Am I being an abhorrent munchkin?

And' date=' if you do use a "universal standard" (I use this term because both theologians and ethical naturalists believe such a thing exists and, depending on the religion, the dividing line between the two can be minimal) then everyone at the gaming table will need to have the same universal outlook or people will be annoyed.[/quote']

I don't think that's strictly necessary. If you "side with" some players over others, then yes, that can disrupt the cohesion of your group. But if everyone's idea of morality is wrong, they become united in their efforts to discover what is morality and why (or who made it that way).

Maybe they are immoral; heck of a WWYCD scenario? ;)

  3. Re: The Wild Hunt

loyal followers that obey his every command and act independantly.

    This. Definitely this. But:

I'm also wondering whether to write them up as Automatons (or an automaton)- since I can't really see the Hunt being KO'd or Stunned.

    Let them be (Stunned).

But when they fall behind (for whatever reason), they vanish away, back to their . . . well, whereever it is they come from :)

This maintains the overall impression that the individual members of the group are eerily synchronized, in their movements; they never become scattered. The vanishing can be IPE since appearing to fade in and out of sight might be part of the SFX.

Then, give the leader of the pack a Continuous Summon, only to call forth the missing ones :eg:

The overall SFX is that you can swipe at them and they dissipate, but a few seconds later they're back again, only this time over there somewhere ;)

The cool thing about making the Hunt one entity is that they fight as one and they fall as one. When the PCs finally beat the entity as a whole' date=' all the warriors "dissipate".[/quote']

Is there a special way to defeat the entity as a whole? Assuming you intend them to be able to gradually just beat up the entire gang, make the leader an extremely tough warrior with Feedback (or, if you're not using Duplications, an equivalent Limitation), so that they can't focus on said leader and quickly defeat the entire group, but the leader will eventually be defeated even if they only take on minions. The leader has the "flag"; the Summon power is in a radius centered on the leader (so anyone - or anything :eg: - summoned will be within that radius), and any part of the Hunt to fall outside that radius will be "left behind".

To make things tricky, you could have the leader be different from the "flagbearer" :sneaky:

  4. Re: Who are the top 5 most powerful characters in your Campaign.

Thanos is another one whose most important power is his Intellect' date=' but couple that with his natural ability to take in and harness the Power Cosmic, his later cybernetic and arcane body enhancements, coupled with DBZ style personal power increases through shear force of Will, his power is to be a general Billy Badass.[/quote']

The problem is that past a certain level of power, anything further is meaningless. To a normal, it doesn't matter whether a character is 10 times more powerful or a thousand; either way, the normal will be squashed like a bug.

Further levels of power also fail to evade the basic futility of it all: just because you can kill people, doesn't mean you can make them do whatever you want.

Claiming that they wouldn't even be alive if you weren't protecting them from forces beyond their ability to comprehend or imagine is, well, self-defeating as persuasion ;)

  5. Re: New Disadvantage: Past.

I can see this being handy for the GM. Can be an unspecified hunted or a social limitation (reputation) as needed.

Exactly. The player would have to be okay with this, be okay with the GM giving him a different disad every 3rd week or so.

    Isn't this essentially just Floating?

Usually a type would be specified (Hunted, etcetera), but this could be handwaved or a higher value assigned to the Disadvantage for its expanded scope.

  6. Re: Who are the top 5 most powerful characters in your Campaign.

I can see Reed being on lists like that' date=' actually. Intelligence and scientific resources on the scale he has puts him up as a major power.[/quote']

    But his power is stretching!

He was a mutant Titan Eternal' date=' he was possibly only outstripped in baseline power by the head Earth Eternal and that was before he started on his path of obtaining his current lofty heights of raw power.[/quote']

So what's his power? Beating people up?

  7. Re: Am I being an abhorrent munchkin?

I'm curious. How would this work if a person has committed heinous crimes yet truly believes they are doing good? They would' date=' in their mind, be guiltless.[/quote']

I imagine it would work in the same way that it does in Order Of The Stick:

Guard, walking away: "You know, I don't have to debate this with you. It's the law. You'll be held until you are found guilty or set free."

Belkar: "Sweet! I'm not even the slightest bit guilty."

Guard, from offstage: "In this usage, "guilty" means that you committed the crime, not that you feel guilt."

    Belkar: "Oh. Never mind, then."

  8. Re: Am I being an abhorrent munchkin?

There is a downside to buying Skills with Limitations. They become a Power, and loose any benefit (or penalty) due to a Stat.

    I.e., Lockpicking (3 Active Points) - OAF(1) gives a roll of 9- regardless of the charcter's DEX.

Extra skill levels, Limited to only apply to the Knowledge and Language skills from Ancient Greece?

  9. Re: Hex DCV vs. Helpless Player DCV

Our group usually plays Heroic Dark Champions which doesn't make these situations as common. If someone is down in a DC game you either ignore them or walk over after the battle to deal with them directly.

After the battle? Is this the same Dark Champions game that your player Eosin was recently asking about a "glance away for one moment and he disappears" power for? :P

  10. Re: Suffer, Kate!

The only theory I've seen that comes even close to costing this out rationally is based on a Standard Effect suppress which would take away the character's "LS: Breathe in Oxygen-rich atmosphere" power' date=' but of course that's an illegal construct at the outset.[/quote']

Stumbled across it by accident while looking for something else.

    http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?p=617239#617239

Tracked down this thread and checked to make sure noone had mentioned it, which you did :)

  11. Re: The Munchkin Build Contest

How about buying Aid with Variable Effect at the +1/2 level' date='and defining it as Aiding a Multipower Reserve & one ultra slot?[/quote']

I must admit that I don't quite see what you intend to accomplish by this. 5ER already allows, on page 112, that

At any level of Variable Effect that allows a character to affect two or more powers of the same special effect simultaneously, a character can use an Adjustment Power to increase both the reserve/pool and one or more slots in a Power Framework at once

Since the maximum value of Variable Effect is +2, it seems that most values of Variable Effect would permit the simultaneous Aid of your Multipower Reserve and any slot. Since a Variable Effect can be redefined from the +1/4 level up, it need not even be defined in advance for your +1/2 level.

  12. Re: He's right over... Where'd He Go!

I don't think Edsel mentioned that this is a Dark Champions game. As was amply demonstrated when Big Gun PC last night double tapped the incapicated guys who were down and out of the fight. It is hard for an normal dude, from mafia to government experiment, to act through a .45 ACP round to the frontal lobe.

    :bmk:

    Blood thirsty.

Let the body Teleport with IPE, exchanging places with a rapidly decomposing flesh copy? One dead body looks much like another, and it deteriorates only when noone is looking at it, dwindling away to nothing in the time it takes someone to look away and then back.

Let the villain bug out when he's badly losing a fight, and the heroes will go nuts trying to figure out how they can stop him from using the suicide/resurrection power, when in fact he already did :eg:

  13. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

"No, no, no. We're not negotiating with the guy. We're not gonna give him what he wants, whether it's 1000 deer or the Santa costume from the Nar-Cola commercials. We're gonna do what heroes always do--we're gonna find the bad guy, beat th'bejesus outta him, and hand 'im over to the folks at Stronghold so they can let him escape in 6 months to do it again."

-Hornet,when an UNTIL Major suggested that perhaps negotiating with Foxbat was something they should consider

  14. Re: Mind link to a vehicle

Second thoughts: I'm uneasy with the general concept of a character who can be caught outside of his powered armor, but then is still able to use the offensive capabilities of that suit.

You might want to reduce the value of whatever Focus limitations are on the mecha's offensive capabilities (the defensive powers obviously don't apply to the character unless he's inside it, though they still do exist and protect the mecha), and refund his points for that Mindlink power; just call his Mindlink the SFX.

  15. Re: Mind link to a vehicle

In the last session, he used this to have the mech attack an opponent while he was Entangled.

I didn't really notice (or remember) this on his sheet until it came up in-game. I want to say that this is wrong, as the mech is built as a vehicle and has no INT. I'd think what he needs to do is built it as a follower AI.

    Thoughts?

If you let him build it as a follower AI, won't it cost even less?

Entangles that block Mental powers (what is the SFX of his Mindlink?) would put a stop to it.

  16. Re: GMs: Funniest Character Sheet Mistakes You've Seen.

We should try writing some of these up.

    Well, okay . . . :sneaky:

This is right up there with Pornographic Memory and X-Rated Vision.

X-Rated Vision: N-Ray Perception (blocked by people, anything else at least one foot thick), sees through clothing and most non-mecha power armor

Pornographic Memory: Retrocognition (Fixed Perception Point: past self, Time Modifiers: can be offset by INT bonuses if character takes Eidetic Memory) on X-Rated Vision, character sees normally in the here and now but remembers everyone being naked

  17. Re: Who are the top 5 most powerful characters in your Campaign.

Um, so, all the various events I've cited happening in the comics, didn't happen?

My "proof" that Thanos and Dr Strange are vastly more powerful than Apocalypse, is that they have, in fact, done vastly higher end feats in the comics. This is no more opinion than that the earth orbits around the sun.

And if your claim is that there is no proof, merely opinions all equally valid, well, please do confirm.

I agree that there is proof, but facts do have context. You can't extend these canon feats to someone else's campaign and have them be "facts" any more than someone else can import different feats from their campaign and have those be "facts".

Since you aren't the GM of Catacomb's campaign, you have no authority to dictate the power level of characters in that campaign; any "facts" you may muster from outside it will carry the weight of opinions. Likewise, since Catacomb doesn't control the established feats from comics (et all), Catacomb doesn't have any authority to dictate the power levels of characters from the comics; any "facts" derived from Catacomb's campaign will have no bearing on the canon characters.

I don't understand why you insist on demanding that Catacomb explicitly acknowledge this distinction before you will cease pursuing a debate over it. I would consider the separation above to be default for all mentions (as in, true unless explicitly counter-indicated), so I don't understand why you consider Catacomb's lack of stated intent to be "evidence" that he actually meant to cross that line.

  18. Re: The Munchkin Build Contest

This could result in saving more points than you paid. No' date=' you don't.[/quote']

    I believe you can' date=' actually[/quote']

Right you are! This is apparently one of those things I made myself forget about preparing to read 5ER (5th Edition, Revised), though I did remember asking about it :o

  19. Re: New Power: Active Point Pool

If there is A SINGLE READER/LURKER who understands the point of this proposed new construct' date=' please log in and say that you understand what Christopher is doing here. ANYONE?[/quote']

Should I log out so I can log in again? ;)

I sort of understood it when he was referring to it in this thread, but here it looks like he meant something different. This construct can be bought multiple times, and powers can be bought outside of it.

I would love to discuss the idea, actually, if it were closer to my original interpretation, and I thought about starting another thread for that, but I'll wait since I don't want to distract readers from Christopher's intended construct or confuse anyone between them while this one is still active.

  20. Re: Build challenge: stasis fields

The ability to turn it off at will is a bit more tricky. EDM isn't like Flight or Running. You can't move and then stop partway' date=' or choose to stop EDMing; there's no "X years per Phase" for EDM. It's more like Teleport; you choose where you want to go and you're there; for instance, "I'm going to EDM fifty years into the future." You can't suddenly decide at twenty years you like the view and shut it off here,[/quote']

Since you're frozen in time, you can't decide at all; you rely on someone outside the field shutting it off for you. An AI can keep watch over things for you, perhaps monitoring the END reserve to leave enough energy for a safe shutdown, but even so it's something outside the area of effect that maintains the field.
