  1. Re: Full Metal Alchemist

any sort of physical intimacy with a great big suit of armor would not be possible for a human female' date='[/quote']

Or vice versa (Al couldn't be physically intimate with a human female) - but why worry about human females? Since the transformation took place before puberty, do we really have any indication of what Al's preference would be?

Gives whole new life to the yaoi fanfic, doesn't it? :eg:

Al DOES know that he can express love for a person by preserving them from harm.

(Don't worry, this is child-friendly enough. It's just a literal spoiler, if you haven't seen season 2 of the anime.)

Not very effectively, as shown when Pride slid a sword through the chinks in Al's metallic armored shell and killed the snake chimera :P

  2. Re: HERO lost builds repository

I will be adjusting the link colors though' date=' and reorganizing them to put every build under one list per thread.[/quote']

I need to make a decision for organizational style. Primarily by thread, with build type under that, or primarily by build type, with thread sources under that? Example follows:

    HERO Forum:

    Ordinary objects:

Thoughts on color? I'm avoiding green because I can't see it very well on the white background, but according to reports purple doesn't work too well either, so that leaves me with blue and red for strong, solid colors. Red and bold is already taken by the forum's highlighting for search results, and I don't want to conflict with that.

  3. Re: HERO lost builds repository

Then why the heck do all your "default" links show up like total crud?

Could be a browser peculiarity, or a result of my severe security settings (viewing pages how I want to view them, not how the page designer intended), but those wouldn't affect how they looked to other people?

I'll try viewing some of my posts from other browsers, then when logged off, then with some of the links followed and others not, etcetera.

  4. Re: HERO lost builds repository

Robyn does' date=' IIRC, use the dark theme[/quote']

I have never, IIRC, changed (or even seen) any color-related viewing options.

So, just now, I went to User Control Panel and actively looked for them :)

Nothing for "theme", but I did find a "dark background" listed under Skins, where my selection is simply "HERO GAMES".

Posts in all threads, FWIW, show up for me as black (by default) text on a white background within a window that has blue buttons and a blue title bar; a very thin horizontal black line separates post windows, and a vertical black line several times thicker provides a border on the right and left (there is a much wider blue column to the left).

  5. Re: Change the STUN Multiple Rule?

Since currently 1d6-1 = [1' date=1,2,3,4,5], the +1 STUN multiple results in [2,2,3,4,5,6]. It's a hassle (vs. just rolling 1d6 & accepting what it shows),

There's a trick McCoy used to save us the subtraction when rolling our STUN multipliers; take the value on the dice, but a 6 counted as nothing.

For a mere +1, this doesn't require much tweaking; just treat a 1 as 2, and everything else as it is.

  6. Re: Alignment Issues

But you can say the exact same thing about the Good/Evil axis. If Good reigns supreme' date=' the character will follow the principles of goodness regardless of what the law says, but if Evil usurps power, the character will ignore the law or obey it according to whether it supports or hinders his evil purposes.[/quote']

If you do that, though, you may as well not have any other measurement of Law; the Good/Evil is already deciding it.

The two-dimensional construct only makes sense if each dimension does not cover anything in the other dimensions (in this case just one, but the principle still applies).

If we can derive Law/Chaos from Good/Evil, it doesn't make any sense to have Law/Chaos; it would be determined by Good/Evil, and therefore couldn't have an independent rating. The existence of two separate axes is meaningless unless we reserve the essential aspects of each axis for that axis.

  7. Re: HERO lost builds repository

Could we choose a less awful colors than purple and lime for the links?

I think lime is default; the purple you see is a shade named Dark Orchid, my official color for Edited text. After ghost-angel mentioned some difficulty in link viewing, I experimented and found that a true purple was highly visible :D

I will be adjusting the link colors though, and reorganizing them to put every build under one list per thread.

  8. Re: WWYCD - little girls and diplomatic troubles

Actually' date=' checking that, there doesn't seem to be a single thing protecting against spotting her[/quote']

    His :)

    motive via psychological analysis' date='[/quote']

Psychological analysis based on existing actions, all of which are openly geared toward protecting the diplomatic effort?

Psychological Disadvantage: Paranoia is not interchangeable with motive - in fact, given the consistency with which trouble seeks out heroes (as mentioned above for Peter Parker), it wouldn't even be paranoia so much as pragmatism and a functional grasp of the reality that Kaja so evidently lives in ;)

or from mind reading that is quick and/or subtle enough to go unnoticed by the decision box.

Mind reading that still needs to realize, after penetrating typical (but enhanced-strength) mental defenses and accumulating enough extra effect to reach the subconscious mind, that the very real mind it is reading is, in turn, controlled by a distributed cellular consciousness that is fully invisible to Mental Awareness and IPE for its powers.

None of which, to be fair, you would know, since the exact builds haven't been posted yet. I'm working on a (semi-secret) annual HERO project that the Druid builds will draw upon (until then, the IDB should be built as extra ECV with IPE, its SFX* that the mentalist only thinks the Druid's mind was read), which is the main reason I hadn't gone back there to stat everything out the moment I finished reading 5ER ;)

    *Whew! Alphabet soup, much?

  9. Re: Alignment Issues

One could interpret the Law/Chaos spectrum as one that rates how much one thinks that obligations to the group/society outweigh the rights (or privilege, if you prefer) of the individual.

The more lawful an individual, the more willing he is to circumscribe the actions/existence of others (through force or the threat of force) for what he perceives as the benefit of all.

I see a similar interpretation, but with less of an externalized twist:

The character's Good/Evil position is located somewhere along the Law/Chaos axis; if Law reigns supreme, the character will follow the law over their own Good/Evil beliefs, but if Chaos usurps power, the character will ignore the law in pursuit of their Good/Evil beliefs.

The question with Law and Chaos isn't, then, about others - it's about oneself. Alignment conflicts aren't resolved through pointing the finger at someone else. Characters can set up some other situation as the scapegoat for their decisions, but fundamentally - in order to make those decisions - they need to have some way of doing so that is innate to themselves.

Bring out the tiger in you! Summon ordinary tiger, Linked HKA Indirect NND (defense is having inwardly-oriented PD) Does Body

Okay, I'm going to stop there, I think I just made myself ill with my own visual :ugly:

  11. Re: I may be overthinking this, but

    Yes.

Do you think you're being clever?

The options are mutually exclusive. Either indicate a single answer or admit that you don't see any difference between options which are, by definition, contradictory.

Saying "yes" without replying to any particular option is essentially the appearance of answering, without an actual answer. If that's really what you want to do, ever, why waste anyone's time by putting forth such an empty illusion?

If you really feel compelled to speak, admit "I don't know." or declare "I'm not going to answer that."; these, at least, openly divulge that no answer is forthcoming. Speaking in a way that may mislead people into thinking you've actually said something is harmful to a constructive process of communication.

  12. Re: Mister Silent and Doctor DiscorD

Being a Hero is about saving lives and protecting the weak from the evil strong.

Whether the weak are good or evil, apparently.

Otherwise, how would you have all those plotlines where the good guys receive a distress call from their nemesis, who wants to be rescued from an even stronger evil person?

Wearing a unique costume is about the desire to stand out and be recognized. The two desires often go together, but they're not interchangeable.

Nor are they always present at the same time. You said "if you want to put on a uniform and be a hero", but it didn't fill in the holes left over from classifying Mister Silent and Doctor DiscorD as "street performers"; they could be heroes in the sense you gave, but not want to put on a uniform.

  13. Re: WWYCD - little girls and diplomatic troubles

biggest problem with this scenario? Why the hell weren't you informed of this beforehand? Did the Mother Country not realize that child slavery was practiced here' date=' or did they just not bother to tell you? Its either a plot hole,[/quote']

I figured Kaja would fill that hole nicely

Him being there to provide information about local customs wouldn't even be necessary if their own spies had done their job, so obviously they didn't know much.

Now, for a twist on this scenario, what would happen if Kaja was tagging along on your (PC's) expedition, and after a minute or two into your own exposure to this scenario, he tracked you down and ran up to report that exactly the same thing had just happened to them a few blocks away? :eg::whistle:

  14. Re: Mister Silent and Doctor DiscorD

If you want to put on a uniform and be a hero' date=' the fire department, police and military are all hiring.[/quote']

I thought part of the appeal in heroing was that each hero's costume was different? The three organizations you list want everyone to be recognizable interchangeably, not unique.

Do you know if we have these already? With the increase in traffic cameras' date=' I was wondering when / if people would start driving with their faces covered. People wear ski masks for the cold - not illegal, ... Just wondering.[/quote']

Forget traffic cameras, the increase of kids who take pictures on their cellphone cameras is posing an increasing danger to privacy worldwide.

  15. Re: Looking for a new cape. Can I get one here?

4 - Death in general is hard to achieve. But if you want something dead' date=' it dies.[/quote']

What that means is not well-covered by the rules . . . but let's wait for Meliora to get into HERO before pointing at GM's option territory, shall we?

I believe the multiplier is [1d6 - 1] +2. You figure 1d6-1 first' date=' getting [1,1,2,3,4,5'], then you add 2 which gives [3,3,4,5,6,7]. Steve L. recently reiterated that it works that way...

I didn't find a recent answer or one in the Rules FAQ, but I did find Steve Long quoting the Rules Faq :)

  17. Re: WWYCD - little girls and diplomatic troubles

Oh' date=' and on the subject of the occurrence "just happening" to be in front of the heros, I feel obligated to point out that the the normal rules of probability have a long and proud history of staying well away from super-beings.[/quote']

This occurred to me, but since that woudn't prevent Kaja from making a big deal of it for his own purposes, I didn't bother mentioning ;)

I believe the US has restrictions on dealing with countries that still have slavery on the books.

That's one of the things I was counting on ;)
