  1. Re: 3D Star mapping software

Haven't programmed in 10 years :P probably wouldn't remember where to start. But supposing I did want to start again and programming an app to control windows interface and how it works.

Think we are flying off topic here. but since you guys brought it up.

    I'll buy stock in that....

  4. Re: Mass Effect Campaign Setting

Ok haven't really made it work like it does in the game, however i created the base of each power and left it at its minimum effect. Still haven't really found a satisfactory way to make it work like it does in the game with out house rules.

The main issue is getting powers to be personal endurance draining (as portrayed in the books), each individual power is only usable every 45s to a minute(as in the game), mean while other powers remain usable.

This in essence means 3 things:

    1. A biotic can have more than one power active a the same time.
    2. Each individual power may only be used once every ~minute.
    3. Using biotic powers is draining on the characters general Stamina.

I pretty much have waved away the restrictions making the powers cost normal endurance and usable as often and for as long as the character can pay the endurance for it.

However i would like to get as close to cannon as possible with out house ruling.

I have attached my version of powers in HDv3 format. Will also post for those who dont use it.

  5. Re: Mass Effect Campaign Setting

Ok i am working on Biotics.

I'm thinking multipower with all powers drawing endurance form a small end pool with slow recharge rate. This will allow having more than one power up limited by an overall capacity limited by the MP pool.

Think I am thinking powers dont have to be ultra slots allowing the biotic to administrate power between defense and attack.

The feeling i get from the books is an average Biotic can only release a full biotic surge about once every 30 o 45 seconds. However really powerful biotics can do a bit more, but it takes a savant to pull off more than a few average tricks or one really powerful blast.

I feel they should be able to use normal endurance as a fall back but at atleast 4x the cost since it is exhausting. Biotics require greater amounts of food than non biotics(Source for most of this is the novel, Mass Effect:Ascention).

Now i want to set some simple guidlines to power creation. Psibly limiting it to certain powers like:

    • Change Environment
    • Density Increase
    • Drain (END, Body, Biotic powers, FF, Armor)
    • Energy Blast
    • Entagle
    • Flight?
    • Force Field
    • Force Wall
    • RKA
    • Knockback Resistance
    • Leaping
    • Misisle Deflection
    • PowDef (vs Biotics Only)
    • Shrinking (Only as an atack on objects)
    • Supress (Biotics)
    • Telekinesis

To build Various Powers in the game this is the general basis, however i will probably shape them to adjust to HS instead of the other way around.

    • Barrier: 8/8 to 20/20 FF lasting from 1 to 2 full turns with a 60s-40s cool down.
    • Lift Flight 4" UBA only to lift target vertically (must maintain momentum) AOE radius (2-3") continuous (6-12 segments) 60-40s cool down. Side effect -8 to -4 penalty to range for duration.
    • Singularity TK STR 40-50? AOE radius (2-4") only to drag objects to the center of area. continuous (4-8s) 64-40s recharge time Side effect -8 penalty to range for duration.
    • Stasis Could be an entangle but nothing is damageable. Not the Oponent, not the stasis field, so this might not be the best option. any sugestions.
    • Throw TK AOE only to push away from character
    • Warp Combined RKA and Drain Armor with AOE

After making the list it seems probably an EC would work better with single charges that recover over time. Since these powers tire the user, use Charges+costs END.

However this is still all musings. Any suggestions?

  6. Re: Kill the Dude with the Thing

Your problem is too much tequila and not enough White Russians.

LOL, Actually we are being invaded with white Russians. I happen to work with one who is married to another. And nither drink vodka.. sheeesh. No wonder they got booted :P

So do I Take the thing from the russian and kill the horse dude?

  7. Re: Mass Effect Campaign Setting

Just poking the concept' date=' but heat buildup is something that I would simulate with an END Reserve. The Reserve is just how much heat the device can withstand and the Recovery is the cool down rate. I'd just build it with a fairly high recovery so it didn't take too long to get back into the fight.[/quote']

Nolgoroth: Love this Idea, would probably have to block the weapon from use until it fully recovers if it hits 0. or something like that. I don't know if there is a mechanical way to simulate that is there? (Burnout; only when END <1)

Thia: You didn't really post but we had a long chat about it before I even started the Thread. Spread Rep... blah blah..

Ship Battles: Don't really want tips on the ship battles, What I am really looking for is actual tips on look and feel for the races. Architecture both on land and space.

About the game bugs. Played it on 360 so I haven't really had any of those issues.

So far I have focused entireley on building the story line and will use all this info to put togeather the mechanics, and hope I will get more look and feel for the difrent races as I go allong.

  8. Re: Planet cracking missiles

    Like I said.

Love... Hate... I can now take out my frustration on my players, for every sci-fi book I read from an author who though may be a great story teller, didn't do his physics homework :P

So i guess I'll just tell my players to hate you while I praise your great work.

    :smoke:

  9. Re: Planet cracking missiles

    Nyrath,

Don't know if i should hate or love you. You bring comprehension to us non-scientific bunch, but you really destroy the simplicity of fiction :P. As one reader complained on your site. I can never read sci-fi the same way again. Sure it forces authors to be more scientifically accurate. But doesn't that take away from their spell bound story weaving?

Ok well, innocence once lost can never be recovered. You need a major disclaimer at the beginning of your illusion destroying truth revealing website.

But oh well. Such is the price of knowledge and knowledge is power. SO I guess, thanks. :D

Yeah yeah yeah, spread spread... cant give it all to one genius it might go to his head.

  10. Re: Mass Effect Campaign Setting

Darned email system isnt letting me know of replies to my threads... sheesh.

    sorry for the disappearing act.

This is all great info guys thanks. I am mainly looking to be faithful to the setting more than the mechanics, though the mechanics are very much a part of the feel of the game. The mechanics of the computer game actually reflect how the technology works. However it IS way to cumbersome for the tabletop.

However thanks to Thia and some pointers there I will probably base some of the overheating idea on the Halo info created. With the necessary modifications of course.

As far s player knowledge of the campaign setting, one has played it, another is playing it while the other 3 are either watching the one playing through currently and reading the codex entries online.

I know the game is planned to be a trilogy but I don't really care. I am starting my campaign only 1 or 2 years past the end of the game. I love the dense political climate that is available during this time. Imagine what the Volus are going through. Even worse, what will this provoke form the Batarians.

This is an excellent climate for a good campaign where politics and guns go side by side.

My players are helping me flesh ou the races a bit more, but I am having some issues visualizing each culture. How their constructions and ships look like. Descriptions are essential and Though I am building an interesting story, actually coalescing what an assari or turrian colony looks like... much less their home worlds.

When my players come head to head with a turrian warship, what MAKES it one. It's a truckload of detail however it is very important to give mass effect its feel where everything seems larger than life.

So I guess what I am asking if there are any particular trait you would attribute, from what is available in the game info, that each species would reflect in their colony and ship construction?

thanks for any help in this area.

  11. Re: Star Wars Hero Resources

We changed our starwars campaign for a mass effect one so I didm't finish the blaster conversions. However.... if there is enough interest in the forum I am mor than glad to finish the conversion for completness sake.

Let me know if you would like to see the finished verison of the Starwars Blaster prefab a few posts above this one.

  12. Krogans: Mass Effect Campaign Setting

Krogans continued: Not to mention their uncanny capacity to come back from the dead a minute later because their secondary organ copies activated after their main ones failed due to heavy lead poisoning.

Healing 5d6(simple); RSR: (Con -2 for every previous activation in one month); Reduced END (0); Trigger (When body drops below 0); can resurrect.?

And korgans used to have honor codes before, but when your species is becoming extinct honor has no value. Wrex is pretty clear about the state of krogan "culture" when conversing with him about his species in the Normandy after completing his mission.

  13. My gamming budies and I have really enjoyed the Mass Effect game for Xbox and PC. Also read the books. We were warming up to a StarWars campaign but after some though we are gearing up for a Mass Effect Campaign instead.

I know it is pretty new but has anyone thought of or worked in this dirrection. I have searched related forums arround the web and a lot of people throw the Idea out there but I have seen nothing more than questions.

I will post my own musings here as I go allong, but anyone else inspired?

  14. Re: Scientists claim warp drive is possible

How plausible is the Mass Effect method of justifying FTL for science fiction purposes? Baset on what i have read on project Rho so far it seams fair enough unless you start shooting FTL ships at planets.

Details for this available by reading the Codex entries here:

    http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/xbox360/file/930279/50930

    Considder The following entries:

    ~Element Zero ('Eezo')~

    ~Mass Relays~

    ~Mass Effect Fields~

~Mass Accelerators~ (not really FTL but same principal)

    ~FTL Drive: Appearance~

    ~Starships: Thrusters~

    ~Communications~

  15. Re: Star Wars Hero Resources

Still working on it but here is a Prefab converted from http://rivendell.fortunecity.com/dark/791/blasters.htm

Started out as 1d6(WEG) = 1DC (HS)but once i hit the first sniper rifle and noticed a head shot with a powerful rifle wouldn't instakill an unprotected unaware normal doing some math figured it should all be 1d6(WEG) = 2DC and it all works out prety good on average damage.

Havent gotten to protection yet but 1d6(WEG) armor should equate to 2rpd

Also weg asumes Armor defenses stack with a characters natural defenses. To emulate this I have come up with 2 options.

    A) Double defense to 1d6(WEG) = 4rpd

    B) Every point of rpd granted by armor makes up to one point of a characturs PD resistant.

Personally I like option B because Hevily Armored but low PD characters will have lower defenses than an equally armored high PD character as long as Armor is greater than natural PD. It also make PD more useful and valuable in a Seting that has a strong slant to KAs.

Kept all the flavored text and included some of the bonuses and penalties implied in the descriptions. To avoid making weapons compound powers or something more complex.

Weights are not listed in most cases. So they might be serriously off. I Min STR is based of 5+DC/2 though when implied by description, heavier or special functionality weapons I increased Min STR. Some may still be off. 2H weapons usually have a break in Min STR of x.5

Hopefully i will finish the list sometime this month (Aug 08) and will re-upload when done.
