  1. Can anyone point me to a written example of a detailed HERO system combat? Something that explains exactly who goes when and what happens? I'm trying to explain HERO combat to some potential players and I'm having trouble because of language and time factors. Ideally I would like to find something online that explains the course of a combat written out like the italicized sections of the rulebook's sidebars.
  2. Has anyone done any work converting Warhammer Fantasy Battle (not the RPG) statistics and abilities into Fantasy Hero equivalents? I have a giant pile of minis that can be used for role-playing purposes and I really enjoy the background information present in the various army books and game fiction novels. I would like to try my hand at running a game based on the Warhammer world, but I'm rather new at the whole roleplaying thing and would like to see someone else's efforts if possible. I especially look forward to the various types of wizards available and the plethora of non human races present.
  3. I like the idea of 25+25 because everyone the characters meet can be a problem. Normal people can put up one hell of a fight and a trained town guard can really put the fear of God into a party. Outside of combat, NPCs with odd or rare skills become very important people. When characters have to trust an NPC to do something the characters don't know how to do, like appraise a rare gem or shoe a horse, players tend to be much nicer to the NPCs than when they're the wondermen who can do it all. The problem in practice is getting the players to go that low. They LIKE being the wondermen who can do it all
  4. Re: GMing Styles Have you actually discussed this difference of playing style with your player? Sit down with him and talk how you would like the campaign to run. Explain that you prefer a sort of extemporaneous, make your own goals campaign. Encourage him to explore the world, listen to rumors, make NPC friends and pick his own path to follow. If he really resists changing styles, talk him into a one session trial and really bring the world to life for him. Make it bright and real and easy to fall into. That simple friend to friend conversation will probably help you get the play style you want to get more than 10 pages of advice online. Give it a shot.
  5. ShadowRaptor, I think that you should try again. This time, as they go through a sample combat and start to mess up, actually stop and say "Your action is not tactically sound because ..." and explain why the player's activity and reasoning may be unsound in the context of the HERO System where it might be okay in the D&D system. Do the same in non-combat interactions and skills usage too. This may make it easier to get your players to get into the new system. I think that HERO for fantasy has a great deal more to offer than D&D. If you show it to your players in an easy to understand give-and-take-stop-and-explain manner instead of saying "you guys are idiots" and stomping up and down on their character's corpses, they may begin to believe HERO is worth playing too.
  6. Tesuji, unlike many of the other posters here, I find your logic and alternative possible conclusions to be quite accurate/likely. Everything that I have read here has lead me to the same conclusions that you have already reached. The mostly likely source of the crushing defeat handed out to the players seems to be the GM. While he claims that the problem was the groups lack of tactics, he does not mention what advice he actually gave the group regarding the tactics. This information could/would arguably have made the difference here. For what it's worth (nothing, just words) I also do not think that anything you wrote was off a level sufficient to be called rude. I also would point out that 30 days with a copy of the rulebook results in far more knowlege of the HERO system than just sitting down to play with a pregen character sheet.
  7. While I appreciate all the helpful people who point out the Google results, I was hoping for personal recommendations from people who have actually used the products. Nothing beats experience and I was hoping to tap into the collective sum available here.
  8. Does anyone know where I can get plastic 25mm hex bases? I would like to use some of my gigantic pile of miniatures in HERO games and I can't find hex bases on which to mount them. I'm not too concerned about the regular figures, but I need hexes to mount figures that take up more than one hex (ie dragons, etc). Help me please!
  9. Would it be possible from someone to post the table of contents for Terran Empire? Legally, I mean. I'm interesting the book, but I would like a rough overview of what's in it. Steve, is that possible?
  10. Has anyone done any work with converting the Games Workshop Warhammer 40000 wargame to playable HERO? Any webpages available? I tried using google, but warhammer conversion always links to chopped up miniatures. I really like the oppressive gothic imagery of the game and think that it would work well with STAR HERO.
