  1. Re: Urban Fantasy Setting: Here There Be Monsters

So did you decide not to give Joe and Jane Mundanes one level of Suppression, contingent on not being exposed to the Supernatural world? I really liked that idea, personally, it made sense why Supernaturals* tend to be on the outskirts of society. It's also a kind of badass version of the idea that Mundanes don't see the supernatural events around them, because they can't, or they refuse to. It also speaks quite nicely to the idea that supernatural beings don't have power unless you believe in them (mostly used with gods), which I tend to like seeing in settings, but that's personal preference.

*We really need to come up with a name that the Hunters call supernatural prey, kind of like in WWZ the soldiers called zombies Zack. This is pretty arbitrary but I find that a little Hunter slang can really flesh out a world.

Though sometimes it just gets in the way.

  2. Re: Need help with a name

I don't know how hard Raven was to squeeze into 300 points, and this is mostly for my own benefit but:

Isn't it true that if you pay points for something (like the discs or the bullwhip), you don't have to pay for WF: That Thing? You might be able to save a couple of points that way, and spend them on something else.

Like I said, he looks solid so you probably don't even need to, I'm mostly just asking for my own knowledge.

  3. Re: Forwarding summon commands

I can definitely see summoning a Fire Elemental who's main deal is that he uses firelings to do his bidding.

I guess if you summon a middle-class Demon, who, to help with his orders, brings in an imp to help out, do you get to boss the imp around?

    I say it's a setting/situation question, not a rules question.

  4. Re: Urban Fantasy Setting: Here There Be Monsters

Exorcism looks pretty solid. Can your "success levels" be reduced to lower than 0 by failed rolls? In your example with Blaise, he fails his first roll, giving the target 2 levels of success against him, if he had any successes, they would have dropped by 2, because he didn't have any, is he dropped to -2?

    I hope not.

  5. Re: Plea for resource help.

Low Powered Superheroic Suggested: Char (10-30) SPD (3-8) CV (6-11) DC (6-12) Active Points (40-75) Skill Points (25-80) Skill Roll (8-14-) Def/rDef (12-15/6-10)

Also, Low-Powered are a suggested 300 Total Points with 35 Points in Matching Complications.

    Only 35 points in Disads? What's a High-Powered superhero?

  6. Re: Dragon-riders of Pern

I suggest you FIGHT TO THE DEATH!

But really, I would love to play in a campaign set in this world, even if only for a short time. I'm confused though, if one might get two PCs, the Dragon and the Rider. I've played under GMs before that allowed you to pretty much dictate what your bought Follower tends to do, but other GMs I've seen will take control of the Follower completely (keep in mind, that they do tend to stay in the Follower's "character"). Thoughts on this?

  7. Re: What skills are necessary for a trial?

I would allow one relevant skill (Persuasion, Oratory, Interrogation, KS: Law) to be a complimentary skill roll to PS: Lawyer, depending on the situation (Closing comments, Questioning a witness, Citing a law, respectively). You could also do it the other way around (use PS: Lawyer as a complimentary skill roll to another relevant skill for the situation).

This is, of course, if you are actually roleplaying the courtroom scene (which I assume you are). Otherwise "You go into the courtroom, roll PS: Lawyer to see how it turns out."

  8. Re: Do you give differing accents to fantasy races?

    R A Salvator: litterature ????

Thus why I spelled it with a lowercase "L" the first time around. I've actually done more than a little academic work on what should and should not count as "literature with a capital L" and you'd be surprised how much scholarly effort has gone into analyzing these ideas about High and Low Culture and what constitutes Literature and Art. Especially considering that almost every book on the Five Foot Bookshelf is written by a white, western male. It's a very interesting subject but unfortunately not the topic of this thread.

    /offtopic

P.S. Also I just remembered that my first post was intended to be a joke. That's what I get for taking Comparative Literature classes for fun...

  9. Re: Assuage my fears about the complexity

If crunchy stuff is your cup of tea then that helps a lot! The way I get people into the system is I run a game for a group, and I build their characters for them. I have them give me a concept and backstory and then I create the character sheet. Actual gameplay in Hero is not all that complex, but character creation and power building definitely can be! Once the players have sheets in front of them, but before the game starts, I go down the character sheet and give them a brief overview of what each stat means, how skills and skill rolls work, and a basic idea of combat flow. Then, as we go through the first game session I make sure that there is plenty of time and opportunity for question asking.

By going over the system and sheet beforehand, the players get a foundation for the ruleset and game flow. Then by playing through a session, things start to click and in my experience it goes very smoothly. The idea is similar to that of "doing assigned reading before attending class." You have a basic idea of how things work, and anything that doesn't quite make sense is explained in application.

A good way to ease them into character creation is when it comes time to assign and allocate experience points. I've found that most players will take to the system very quickly and most are very excited to begin creating their own character sheets.

  10. Re: How many Combat Luck for Mousquetaires ?

    :cut:

The "lamp" you're talking about: I believe you are referring to a chandelier.

Also, keep in mind that Riding as a skill is entirely different from Transport Familiarity: Horses (or Equines, if you prefer). The TF is probably an everyman skill (or in your case, an "implied" skill). Basically the TF gives you the ability to get on a horse and go from point A to point B, maybe even very quickly. As far as Riding as a skill, it's more for combat oriented things, or difficult riding maneuvers.

It's essentially the difference between being able to drive a car (which is a TF), and having Combat Driving.

I think not giving everyone a Riding skill is entirely doable, but I do consider horseback tricks to be very Swashbucklery, so I do tend to give my fencers Riding.

  11. Re: Fantasy setting book in 6th edition?

Fantasy Hero Genre Book is set for GenCon this year (August).

When I last asked Steve if they planned on updating or releasing any Setting Books for Fantasy Hero last year he said it was doubtful in the near future.

In the meantime the pure meat of the Setting Stuff is perfectly usable under 6E, and minimal updating needs to be done to get the Mechanics from 5th to 6th Ed.

Ah that's where my confusion was founded. FH6E is in, setting books not so much.

  12. Re: Fantasy setting book in 6th edition?

It has yet to be released. I just tried to do a quick search to find where Mr. Long posted an approximate release date, but I either dreamed it, or my search-fu has failed me. I'm under the impression that the 6E Fantasy Hero will be released sometime in 2010. As I type I am starting to second guess myself and Mr. Long may have put Fantasy Hero on the list of things that are more conceptual, and less likely to get a 6E reprint. I think he's printing it though...

Either way, you can easily use the 5E Fantasy Hero (especially if someone more knowledgeable says 6E won't be released!). You would need to convert the 5E character sheets, but really it shouldn't be that big of an issue. Feel free to PM me if you need any help with your Fantasy Setting!

  13. Re: Firefly Hero (reprise)

I played in a game set in the Firefly universe, GM: Manic Typist (on these boards). I don't know how much conversion work he put into it, we mostly just built our own crew along the lines of Space Western and went from there. You might benefit sending him a PM, but again, I don't know how much adaptation was involved, we mostly just took the flavor and seasoned to taste.

  14. Re: New friction(less) power

Again' date=' the problem I came across is how to do a ranged disarm? I'm open to suggestions. I would use TK-as used by Tomestone in the BBB, but if I read TK rigth, you shouldn't use it for disarm.[/quote']

Not to be repetitive, but isn't the whole point of Stretching that you can apply your HtH combat and STR based maneuvers at range? Can't you make it with Stretching and appropriate advantages/limitations? I don't have 6E books or HD, otherwise I would build an example.

I don't know what you want the range on it to be, and I don't know if these are enough advantages/limitations, but here it is in 5th:

Stretching 10", Does Not Cross Intervening Space (+1/4) (62 Active Points); Only For Using Disarm and Trip Maneuvers at Range (-1), Always Direct (-1/4), Range Modifier Applies (-1/4), no Noncombat Stretching (-1/4)

    22 Real Points.

  15. Re: How many Combat Luck for Mousquetaires ?

    Interesting build...

I notice you paid only 3-pts Combat Skill Level for Fencing, while Fencing regroup more than 3 combat manoeuver, shouldn't you pay 5-pts CSL ?

I seem to remember seeing other builds buying 3-point levels for use with their entire Martial Art, but honestly I'm probably wrong, and 5-point CSLs would be the correct ones to buy, in which case I would have dropped it down to a +2.
