  1. Re: battle Wear vs. Town Wear

From the paranoid player perspective' date=' that would not work either. "But the lord may only want us disarmed so he can take advantage of our weakened state" or "Oh sure, I expect the Lord to be honorable, but that shifty eyed retainer of his wants our prized possessions."[/quote']

    This got me thinking:

If you had to crawl into hell and back for this sword (or whatever else ridiculous feat), then you would NEVER leave it with ANYONE. If I have the legendary Axe of Jack Frost, for which I had to trek up to a frozen peak, defeat Jack's minions, defeat Jack's lieutenants, defeat Jack's personal guard (of terrifying frost giants), and then defeat Jack himself...whew...

Basically: Legendary weapons tend to be defended by legendary things of legendary power, even if that power comes from the weapon itself. Obviously people out there know about these legendary weapons, otherwise there would be no legends about them. Also, once you go through these trials and obtain this legendary weapon, you are now legendary....which means people are after me and my Axe the same way I was after Jack and what was his!

I don't care how "trusted" and "protected" this king's guarded armory is, but it's not better than a frozen peak with ice monsters...and if it's not better than that, then it won't do, because that's what I had to go through, and the guy behind me might be better than me.

I guess I had never really made the connection between PCs and legendary weapons/armor. It doesn't just get added to the inventory, you get added to the legend.

  2. Re: How many Combat Luck for Mousquetaires ?

This was my "musketeer" build, if it helps. This may be a different direction than the one you're going with, but he was insanely effective and built on a similar point-scale.

Also he's speed 3. It didn't get in the way.

Also, for FH, I tend to not allow more than one level of Combat Luck. That's probably just me though.

  3. Re: battle Wear vs. Town Wear

I tend to play no-armor characters but whenever we start a game in a city my first question is "What's the socially acceptable level of personal armament." I'm not looking for trouble, but trouble tends to find PCs and I want my rapier/shortsword/handaxes (whatever the case may be) at my hip just in case!

That being said, if I have a sword on and I get into a fight at the local inn, it's gonna be a fistfight until escalation seems necessary. It seems silly to "Have at thee!" every time someone pushes you when you say something brash, not to mention the trouble that murder tends to bring in civilization. Besides, fistfights are fun!

  4. Re: Anyone ever run a campaign with *really* young kids?

This won't be as helpful as the Palindromedary Express, but I suggest using this (fantastic) opportunity to hone your improvisational GM skills.

Also I was homeschooled through everything past 1st grade, and the most beneficial thing about it was how involved my parents were. This is a great thing you are doing for your children.

  5. Re: Fantasy or Pulp?

I suppose my experience with Holmes is rudimentary at best. I guess when I think of mystery I tend to just group it in with pulp. More evidence of the genre being elbow deep in everything (or in nothing, as the discussion goes).

I'm gonna go read more Doyle.

  6. Re: Fantasy or Pulp?

Maybe. But many of the authors you mention - Vance' date=' [b']Arthur Conan Doyle[/b], Heinlein, Philip K. Dick, etc etc, don't give me the slightest pulp vibe. I guess it's a matter of taste.

    cheers, Mark

Not to be argumentative or beat a dead horse, but what about Sherlock Holmes isn't pulpy?

  7. Re: Fantasy or Pulp?

Similar to what Rex said: I usually consider Pulp more of an aesthetic than a genre. I tend to do the same thing with Steampunk. They have their little intricacies, and everyone tends to know what you're talking about when you say Pulp or Steampunk, but the lines are blurry.

  8. Re: On the Willful Killing and Maiming of NPCs

I've been keeping tabs on this thread, and I just wanted to let the OP know that this is the best thread in the Champs forum in a while (IMO, obviously). Scenarios like the one you're orchestrating make me want to GM or play in the Champions genre.

    Well done sir, and rep.

  9. Re: Dragon-riders of Pern

Aw man I completely forgot about this series! I read a bunch of these books 5+ years ago but I remember them being very setting oriented, which would make statting everything out a breeze.

If only I remembered enough to take part in this grande olde conteste. Maybe I'll pick these up again over winter break...

  10. Re: Dr Hank Pym (Marvel)

Less of a nitpick and more of a lack of knowledge on my part, but why is his Growth/Shrink multipower keyed in with multi-slots instead of ultra-slots? I am probably wrong, but I find it hard to visualize splitting multipower points to grow and shrink at the same time...

  11. Re: Density Dilemma!!!

sounds like another case of people making things more difficult than they have to be. :doi:

the denser he is the less he can stretch, the more he stretechs the less dense he is?

Sounds like 2 power Multipower to me...cut and dry.

Yes yes and yes. Buy the desolid separately so that you can stretch and use desolid at the same time.

  12. Re: I'm building a gold dragon on 350 points

Update: All of the weapons based martial arts in the UMA (fencing, kenjutsu, etc) have the note "Used with Blades Weapons Group; Blades Weapon Element is free." (Not all of the armed ones say blades, but fencing and kenjutsu do, you get the picture.) Some arts that have that "free" weapon element will then pay +1 points to use the art barehanded.

Check with your GM, but that leads me to believe you can buy your dragon martial art with the teeth weapon element for free as needed.

  13. Re: Solo PbM game: Help!!

My old GM told me a story about a solo game he ran with one of his long-time players. Apparently they had been running a long fantasy game, then all the other players moved away. The GM and player continued gaming by running a solo campaign that was a comprehensive account of the PCs backstory. The two friends got to continue gaming, and the player really got a handle on where his character came from and why they acted the way they did.

I don't know what kind of game you ran before, and it seems you've settled on genre and game-type, but I thought I'd toss this in there because I thought it was really cool.

  14. Re: Package Deals?

I really like using Templates as impromptu NPC character sheets. Oh, this guy got talked into tagging along and needs to make an X skill roll? No problem I have a generic "write-up" right here!

  15. Re: Someone called it mutagenic.

What I'd balk at (besides increasing this power further for real 'who do we need now?' effects) is this whole 'potions and syringes as OAF' thing.

Just cause it's in some book doesn't make it unbroken, IMO! Does he go into combat waving a syringe around? just how obvious and accessible are they, and how many are there?

6? for one phase each? shall I assume universal focus, requiring only some basic knowledge to use this item?

+1 might be too big a savings for something that can be pulled out various pockets up to 6 times, or is this 1 syringe?

Adding limited charges mitigates the savings, your no longer getting 1/2 off for the Focus, but it still saves you a lot, and it potentially adds utility to the power,

while more often than not limiting the power one bit!

'nuff said; I will accept no 'no-prize' answer that explains that potions/syringes as OAF; anyone care to disagree?

Food for thought: Whatever Focus you might consider applicable to a quiver of arrows would fit this syringe build.

I do not know what level of Focus that might be, that is for you (plural) to decide.

  16. Re: I'm building a gold dragon on 350 points

I'm not positive but I think you define a weapon class (unarmed, blades, teeth) when you build the art, and only have to pay for additional weapon classes. You may be able to save a point there. I know, I know, it's only one point, but sometimes one point matters!
