  1. Re: a question on bleeding

That seems to penalize some concepts.

Let's say I make a low pain tolerance but tough to kill character (20 Body & 20 Stun which should be even easier to do in 6ed). Under your rule he is knocked out if he's at 0 Body and I didn't take any Physical Disad.

You recieved a rebate on or in future editions paid less for the stun which provides an implied disadvantage. Knowing in advance that the house rule exists would allow you to take those points and purchase additional Stun only to counter Body Damage (One presumes at a significant discount).

As a side note in 20+ years of playing Hero I've never seen a player build where Body = Stun. Not saying it isn't valid just likely to be a very rare scenario.

  2. Re: Finding something Hero System can't model...

time stop' date=' then. No speed zone. No hand-waving either.[/quote']

As I said earlier in this thread

I've traditionaly modeled it as a handful of AOE selective powers and Teleport Usable as an Attack. So' date=' essentially "What did I want changed about the world while time was stopped?' and "Where did I want to be standing when it started again?" Expend a single action for a Multiple Power Attack and Bob's your Uncle (not literally mind you, unless there's some EDM involved or I suppose if you actually have an Uncle Bob, which strangely I do.)[/quote']

Does need to have IPE and may want to add Autofire to taste.

  3. Re: Finding something Hero System can't model...

There are lots of things the Hero System can't model if you define the Hero System as: what is contained in the Hero System rulebook. Once you start adding in all of the additional stuff from the ultimate books' date=' all bets are off.[/quote']

I haven't found that to be the case. In general I've found that the Ultimate books provided easier ways or less expensive ways to model things but not so much ways to model things that couldn't be done previously with the core rules.

  4. Re: Teleport redirection

Since Teleport is supposed to be instantaneous, I think you need to hit them after/as they arrive (If you hit them before they leave they would just then teleport to their desired location when their action resolved). So maybe something like

Detect: Teleportation with Discrim or Analyze to determine Point of Arrival, and targeting

Teleport - UAA, Ranged, Indirect, AOE? (To catch passengers), trigger (Target Arriving at Destination)

  5. Re: 6e Characteristics

Steve considered that and rejected it.
We know that ... That Steve considered it and decided not to do it is really neither here nor there. The comment was an expression of dissent. I will be using this method irrespective of what 6E says.

I suspect that people might be interested in something more substantive than the sentence "Steve considered that and rejected it." Perhaps "Steve considered that and rejected it, which I agree with because..." or "Steve considered that and rejected it, which I'm not certain about but I understand that it adressess ..." etc. Simply stating what Steve has decided brings less to the discussion than it could, I guess is what I'm saying.

  6. Re: How to encourage RP?

just because every time I see the thread title the same though crosses my mind...

remote control Puppy-training shock collars should do the trick.

Fundamentally flawed; Punishment only really works to discourage behavior - So if they were roleplaying badly - Shock Collars all the way. Encouraging behavior is a little more tricky - Positive Reinforcement maybe. Have you tried Reeses pieces?

  7. Re: How to encourage RP?

As the GM you have at least some control over when Combat happens; If you present a session where the challenges are more puzzle and/or character driven you may be able to nudge them in a more interactiony direction.

You could also provide each player with different clues and/or information between sessions; This would encourage them to talk to each other about what to do next and give you the opportunity to encourage them to do so in character.

  8. Re: Finding something Hero System can't model...

EDM: Time Zone is a build from The Ultimate Speedster. There's a few additional Mechanics tagged in - and it's playable.

Looking at Reason From Effect, what does Stopping Time do? Well, it stops everything. Mechanically, stopping/pausing everything is one of two things: Entangle and Suppress. And LOTS OF IT. Steve built a Time Stop power in Digital Hero that's some 7.5 Million Real Points....

Well 'I stop Everything' is absolutely one way to look at the effect of time stop, another is 'I can Move things, including myself, and cause damage to things and perform tasks that would normally take time without interference or a significant expenditure of time'. So if your GM is edgy about optional rules or just the Speed Zone in general you can still hit the Effect (or very close to it) on a budget.

  9. Re: Finding something Hero System can't model...

Time Stop is easy. Speed on a Trigger.

Not even certain how that would work.

I've traditionaly modeled it as a handful of AOE selective powers and Teleport Usable as an Attack. So, essentially "What did I want changed about the world while time was stopped?' and "Where did I want to be standing when it started again?" Expend a single action for a Multiple Power Attack and Bob's your Uncle (not literally mind you, unless there's some EDM involved or I suppose if you actually have an Uncle Bob, which strangely I do.)

  10. Re: Finding something Hero System can't model...

...and that is a problem because....? :sneaky:

The limits of Hero are these: we can not and do not agree on how we should model stuff, or we do not have enough points.

There are things you can not do, because we are specifically excluded from doing them in the rules, but there is almost always another way - usually longwinded, convoluted and rarely if ever entirely satisfactory (and almost certainly involves liberal application of powdered handwavium).

Let me give you an example: Possession.

I move my consciousness into another body, permanently, until I decide to move again. I have access to all the new body's powers and abilities, skills and knowledge but do not forget my own knowledge (which is presumably written to empty memory as part of the possession process).

Best of luck with that one.

I've got that handwavium here somewhere...If I had to model this I'd probably try a Multi-Form variable Pool and EDM UAA: Poof He's Gone and I'm him and me - Klunky and Expensive, it might also be technically illegal which would give me the hat trick.

  11. Re: Finding something Hero System can't model...

Hero System cannot accurately model animals. That's right, normal animals in Hero System are broken. Many of them are either too weak, or in some cases, too powerful, for what they should be able to do.

In fact, I don't know many people who disagree with me on this position.

I think that might be a they haven't been modeled accurately more than they can't be modeled accurately - Although it occurs to me I have no idea what the swallowing whole mechanic is in the Hero System...you'd think it would've come up.

  12. Re: Finding something Hero System can't model...

I thought maybe Cthuthonic creatures, but nope - Those are easy.

Anyone found a limit? Anyone want to propose one to be broken?

How do you do the Madness causing effect of the Cthulian Creatures? Ego/PRe Drain - Just big Pre Attacks? Not looking for Bigby's prognosticated argument, just curious.

As to the part that may cause Bigby's forshadowed conflict (Slapping Bigby in front of things really does change how the phrase feels) Hero doesn't tend to do absolutes well, not that big a deal for superheroes where absolutes tend to be a bit 'soft' (I'm immune; until I'm not) but in fantasy 'hard' absolutes are, at the very least, staggeringly expensive to model.

  13. Re: Would you allow the white knight defense?

    Excerpted from this thread,

My main question is about the two Absorption powers feeding into their own max Absorption caps. Would you allow (or, have you allowed) a recursive power like that? Are there other cases of recursive powers that you've seen?

Those have "Only Restores to Starting Value" on them so wouldn't they not so much increase the caps?
