    The Dimension Commandoes 10

Fu landed lightly on the hull of the intruder, T-shirt billowing slightly from the slipstream as he caught his fellow commando by the arm. The slight man held his bigger companion to the hull as he watched to see how the Scarab and Lily did. A moment later, he saw a hatch pop open at the bidding of the technomancer.

Now it was time for him to do the same thing with his natural talents. He felt along the hull with one hand, while holding Swithin with the other. He wasn't entirely comfortable with the other man's fantastical luck.

He had always been taught to make his own luck.

Fu found a seam. It wasn't much to work with, but it would have to do. Physical assaults were what he did on missions.

Fu concentrated, drawing on his inner energy until it manifested as a vaporous cloud around his fist. He willed his hand to be like iron, like the sword. The fist came down against the metal hull. It kept going through the metal, dropping the wall section into corridor below. Circuitry in the walls short circuited, dumping that section of the ship in darkness.

"Looks like you hit a main, or something," said Swithin, dropping into the corridor before the martial artist could recall from the impact of his punch. There was an exchange of fire as Fu readied himself to follow his teammate. The lights flickered back to life as he touched down on the metal floor.

Two piles of soldiers moaned at either end of the hallway. Swithin stood in the middle, untouched by the fire that had been lobbed his way. He straightened his jacket, and started down the hall. Fu followed, taking the time to disarm one man before he could try to pull his pistol's trigger again.

That move may have saved the trooper's life.

  2. Re: light saber color signification

According to the WEG star wars, a jedi has to build his own light saber as part of his training and part of that is a crystal that controls the blade width and length. The color of the crystal controls the color fo the blade.

  3. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group...

Two from my Heroes Unlimited game Monday night.

Mickey's character has been cursed with the body of a Pomeranian. He is supposed to secure the head of a demonic mercenary villian for a cure. The heroes follow the villain to the Transylvanian mountains where they find a castle.

Josh (laughing): We're going to fight Dracula! We're going to fight Dracula!

Mickey: Shut up. Don't give him any ideas.

The guys found a graveyard on the way to the castle. They were set upon by werewolves, One of them grabbed Mickey's PC, and prepares to bite. Unfortunately for it, Mickey bit its nose first. It struggled valiently with the Pomeranian hanging from its snout before another PC chopped it down.

  4. Re: The Warehouse

Construction was completed in February of 1933 under the control of the Hidalgo Trading Company with offices in New York City. This secure storage facility is the state if the art in high tech storage.

So what items are stored here? And how would you write them up in Hero terms?

I don't know about write ups, but Doc Savage used to keep the Helldiver there, plus autogyros, various amphib airplanes, cars and trucks.

I want to say a zepplin also but I don't know if that is correct.

Plot Hook 1: Lily Veil's Hunger has grown out of control. She is leaving a trail of drained bodies everywhere she goes. Is this natural, or caused by some outside force?

Plot Hook 2: Lily's parents have been kidnaped. The ransom is a relic from a wreck that she dove on in her normal identity. The heroes get involved through chance as she tries to secure the item. Does she ask them for help, or does she go it alone? And why doesn't she ask the Council for help?

  7. Re: The New Circle

    The Dimension Commandoes 8

Lily Veil's form reduced itself to a flat shadow as she drifted into the airlock opened by the Scarlet Scarab. He bounded to the inner door, popping that open with the ease of a born thief. She sensed light ahead of them, and flowed through the door first.

Guards in green armor waited beyond the airlock's inner door for the intruders. Their energy weapons were ready for conventional enemies. They weren't ready for a living shadow to penetrate their armor and suck the life from each of them with a touch. That made them forget the crimson gadgeteer in need of a distraction. A blast of wind bowled the surviving barricade over as those touched by Lily succumbed. She moved on in search of more prey.

Her hunger wanted to gorge itself, and she could only point it in the right direction, and try to keep it from killing any living thing in her way as she searched for the control room.

    ********

Lily Veil had started life as Gidget McIntyre, a beautiful girl who lived for surfing, sailing, even diving in the Pacific. Her father and mother ran a small business from their home, and had plenty of free time and money to indulge her desires. It was a slice of heaven on earth for them.

Everything went south when Gidget found a wreck on one of her diving expeditions. Instead of notifying anyone of her intentions, she began to explore the sunken boat. She had done it numerous times before with tours, so had a basic idea what to do if there were problems.

Gidget started exploring the wreck, trying to be careful how she moved, and what she touched. After a few minutes, she found a chest locked up and pushed against a wall in what could have been a cabin. She noted how the wood seemed to be just like new which she knew must be impossible. Curiosity made her open the chest without trying to get it to the surface first.

Black tar erupted from the chest, devouring Gidget, becoming one with her. A silhouette climbed on the deck of her boat after minutes of pain. Finally the tar sank beneath her skin, becoming what she refers to as the Hunger. She practiced with the ability until she had control over what her new body could do.

Gidget adopted the name of Lily Veil, becoming a minor heroine. The council contacted her, and asked her to join their team of dimensional commandoes. Supposedly it was for her ability as a sneak and spy, but really because the Hunger marked her, and they wanted to keep an eye on her for its vampiric tendencies.

A beam from the mask strikes the D-commando, turning him into a swarm of beetles. Worse, the new scarlet scarabs are voracious carnivores. Theo pulled a bladeless knife from his utility belt after he and Lily touched down. He tried to ignore beams of light trying to touch the drop jet as he pointed the hilt at the hull of the ship he stood on. A series of tones popped open a hatch a few feet away.

"Sonic screwdriver always works," he said, placing the lockpick back in its special pocket.

I am not an expert with the HERO system, but I think a multipower with restrainable, maybe OIF, must have tattooed image for power, and endurance battery would be the way to go.

  10. Re: The New Circle

Theo Cable looked out the open drop door. His scarlet costume reflected the dim light quietly as he took a deep breath. His right hand gripped a stanchion as the plane dodged rods of light with cheerful abandon. Lily Veil grabbed his other arm with both of hers. She looked way calmer than he felt at the moment. Fu and Swithin stood on the other side of the cabin. Swithin was smiling.

Cable shook his head as the "Get Ready" was announced.

The drop ship passed over the turtle shell invader a few moments later. Red flashes told the commandoes how welcome they were as Cap Charlton swerved left and right to keep from being shot down. Theo released the stanchion, flinging himself and Lily free from the plane's exit. He concentrated on hitting the hull as gently as possible as he aimed for the top of the round intruder.

Something from his utility belt should open a door for him.

Otherwise he and Lily would be in a hopeless situation.

    ********

Theo Cable had started his own company in Vibora Bay. He specialized in micro machine solutions to out of the ordinary problems. His tiny robots and computer systems led to new ways of doing things, especially in the construction, and electronics industries.

Eventually Theo became a consultant in Dr. Scarab's battle with his brother, and other mystical menaces threatening the Earth. The scientist discovered he possessed a small talent for magic along the way. His ability focused on magic machinery, just as his scientific training had been turned to a narrow field before that.

When Takofanes began his march, killing any who crossed his path, Dr. Scarab was among those who opposed the lich in battle. Theo was there also, trying to come up with a way to stop the living dead creature. He had to watch from the sidelines as his friend and mentor was struck down.

Theo built a small arsenal, underwent training, and adopted the costumed identity of the Scarlet Scarab to honor his friend. He has operated on his own, and as a dimensional commando once he felt he was ready to carry on Dr. Scarab's mission.

Reading between the lines, sounds like an interesting origin story.

His CON, SPD, END and ED seem a little low for "typical" campaigns - is he intended to boost them via his Qliphothic Body Control VPP?

I did an origin story, but the thread carried it away about 300 pages ago. When I get it all done, I'll gather the whole team up in one spot. You're exactly right about the Vpp, but also as enhancers for his regular powers and some shifting such as growth, desolid, and shrinking.

Plot Hook 1) Q-man becomes involved in disaster relief of some kind in Boston, where he disappears. Clues point to a Demon morbane trying to recreate Luther Black's Demonflame Incident for his own gain, using the transformed boy's substance.

Plot Hook 2) A breach opens close to the characters' home city. The Commandoes respond, hoping to close the breach before anything comes through. Instead Q-man and the characters are drawn across. Then his protective armor begins to break down, exposing them to Qliphothic essence.

Plot Hook 3) Two more Q-men appear out of thin air. They call for the surrender of the world to their Grand Inquisitor. Any who oppose them will be executed. The original Q-man, the only one who could know a viable weakness has vanished. What is the connection, and can the players find it in time?

  13. Re: The New Circle

Ishmael Adonis was a result of the Demonflame Incident. Luther Black opened a rip between dimensions to steal the power of an elder god. He was opposed by a variety of heroes, and the criminal organization VIPER. He was crippled under the assault by the combined forces, and his attempt rained Qliphothic energy down on the city while the rip was open.

Ishmael's mother had been struck by one of those threads, pouring malevolence into her. She had been carrying Ishmael at the time, and decided to rip him from her womb by any means necessary. A broken bottle was her knife. As she raised the infant over her head to dash him to the street, a policeman stopped her.

Ishmael's mother was taken to a hospital, but she didn't survive the night after her forced cesarian section. The infant was placed on life support until it could do things for itself like breath. A man claiming to be Ishmael's father took him from the hospital. By the time the real father arrived, the man was long gone.

Ishmael was subjected to various experiments over the next few years as his adopted father tried to harness the power he felt was inside the young boy. During one experiment, initiates from DEMON broke into the lab. Their attempt to seize the child resulted in an explosion which thrust him from the real world to cross the planes surrounding Earth.

Ishmael learned a little of the forces across the fields of Faerie, the netherworld, and some places in-between before he returned to Earth. He was able to build himself a body, but the taint of his Qliphothic nature made it impossible to be around people without protection for them. Representatives of the Council did that for him. In return, they wanted him to act as their agent and stop other invasions from beyond the pale.

    He readily agreed.

Ishmael is able to fly, shoot blasts of energy, and is hard to hurt. On top of that, he can change the properties of his body with a small effort. This allows him to expand, harden himself, pass through objects, or delve into the nature of things around him.

He sometimes considers this a bad trade for his lost childhood.

Plot Hook 1) Captain Charlton has finally found a solid clue to what happened to his best friend. He had been taken, and lived a life under a false identity as someone close to the PCs since the incident on the lake.

Plot Hook 2) The Council has asked the players to recover an artifact while their own team has been diverted to look into something strange on the other side of the planet from where the artifact should be. Are the two things, artifact and event, connected?

Plot Hook 3) Charlton lost most of his team, and has contacted the players to mount a rescue mission into another dimension.

Ishmael Adonis nodded when he heard the warning from the pilot. His murky brown form shifted as he walked to the rear of the narrow space. He thought for a moment before passing through the metal of the jet. He hardened his vaguely humanoid form once he was clear of the transport.

Q-man wanted to try and ask the pilots to stand down until things could be sorted out. As he approached in a trail of shining darkness, they opened fire on his metallic form. Energy blasts struck him in the chest and his upper right arm. The vehicles tried to get around their sudden target to get to the plane beyond. They didn't expect the target to shoot back.

Beams of liquid fire ripped through the welcoming committee before they could fire their energy weapons at the drop ship. The fighters dissolved under the transforming stream issuing from Q-man's mouth. The pilots took to the air in hover chairs that slowed their descent to the Earth below.

  15. Re: The New Circle

    The Dimension Commandoes 2

Captain Steve Charlton pulled on the wheel, listening to radio chatter from the ships in the neighborhood. The Hub had spotted this incursion, passed the word to him and his team, and here he was flying over the Pacific wondering what was going on.

"It's a boundary crosser, Captain," said a voice in Charlton's radio.

Charlton had sent one of his team ahead. Mister Mist was an expert at getting into places he shouldn't be in, and liked to sneak around anyway. His voice was a conglomeration of dozens of other voices all talking together like an out of sync chorus. He also knew when something had crossed part of the veil to reach their part of reality.

"Trouble on your six, Cap," said another, more distinct voice in Charlton's mind. "Better look after yourself."

Charlton knew better than to disregard that other voice, even if he was the only one that heard it. He concentrated on the steering yoke, eyes closed for the few seconds he needed. Suddenly he was standing at the stern of the plane, scanning the sky while also piloting in the cockpit. Two flares told him that a pair of strange aircraft were trailing the drop ship.

A glimpse of the future told him that the two trailing craft would fire on his. He wouldn't have known except for the voice in his ear. He let his concentration slip so he could function in the real world again.

"We have unfriendlies on our six, Q-man," Charlton said into his intercom. "Take them out. Everyone else, get ready to board that other craft while we provide a distraction."

"Thanks again, Duck," he whispered to himself, "wherever you are."

    ******

Steve Charlton had always known where things were, what was the likeliest thing to happen. It was usually a feeling of some type, never anything distinct. That changed when he and his best friend, Waylon ‘Duck' Stodge, died.

The boys were ice fishing not far from Steve's grandparents' house. The Charlton family lived within walking distance for generations. Each son, or daughter, moved to a house close to the ancestral homestead, or bought land and built a house on it. The Stodges had moved to the neighborhood and the boys had hit it off right away.

On this particular day, they had went to a local lake that had frozen over during the night to do a little fishing. They hadn't expected to catch anything. It was an excuse to goof off from their chores. In this case, tragedy struck when the ice cracked and sent the boys to the bottom of the lake. Steve passed out from oxygen deprivation as he tried to get out of the freezing water. His parents found him at the lake's edge.

    Duck's body was never found.

Steve's feelings grew until he saw pictures of what was going to happen, what had happened, and what was going on a good distance away. This helped him when he joined the Air Force and became a pilot. He put in his time quietly, listening to the warning voice in his head when it spoke.

He came to believe that Duck Stodge was still alive somewhere and warning him of danger, and when the opportunity to gain access to other dimensions needed someone like him, he jumped at the chance. His best friend is alive and he won't stop until he has found him.

  16. Re: The New Circle

(Sorry about the piecemeal nature of this, but I hope to have the whole team assembled with sheets and histories. The basis for all of these heroes, except for maybe two, have been members, or worked with the Justice League at one point or another.)

After the initial defeat of Istvatha V'han, the Trismegistus Council decided they needed a unit to oppose the continuing interest of V'han as well as others who hoped to add Earth to their territories. They hope to expand the ranks of the team when possible, but only seven have been recruited so far.

The team leader is Captain Steve Charlton, a master of weapons and technology, who had retired from the air force after a distinguished career.

Charlton gathered the rest of his team from the four corners of the world.

The Scarlet Scarab combines magic and tech in his costumed persona while running a business on the side. He had tried to live up to the memory of Dr. Scarab after that great hero perished in the battle against his brother.

Mister Mist had walked the streets of Babylon, terrorizing the things that lived in the Rookeries. Summoned to Earth in a failed ritual, he decided his abilities were best suited to terrorizing the likes of Demon, and the Sylvestris.

Lily Veil was a secretary in the Washington bureaucracy who had acquired an ability to command shadows, becoming one if she willed it.

Fu, a former member of the Tiger Squad, joined after a particularly nasty incident in Hong Kong which had almost plunged Asia into a war. He felt that the ministers in his own government had caused the situation, and then hindered a peaceful resolution until it was almost too late.

Q-Man is an example of an amateur almost killing himself in an experiment that turned into something unexpected but successful enough in its own way. There seems to be zero limit to the uses of the energy that he has invested himself in, but he has molded himself into a flying brick that uses some energy powers. It's a lot less than what he could do, but it's all he's ready to handle at this point.

Swithin is a man who controls himself, his environment, and how things work to help him do his duties.

These are the two characters I am currently playing. The first is from Animemun's TEEN GUARDIANS, where heroes have been turned into teenaged versions of themselves.

The other is from Dan Flack's Galactic Patrol, a blue, four armed, three eyed, red haired, alien named Bao Shen.
