  1. Re: The One, True Son of Krypton

    It doesn't matter.

In a game where Superman is portrayed as he was in the 1950s, (or as he first appeared in the comics, etc.) his build, in game terms, varies with each interpretation of the role, within the limits of the technology used to portray the character. In those cases, one is restrained because of various restrictions. Movie SFX cost money, some are completely unconvincing. (Ever watch the Superman movie serials? :nonp:) In any case, each medium exacts a toll on verisimilitude. You have different "versions" of Superman that are completely different, apart from a few unifying themes and as much of his powerset as can be effectively portrayed given these limitations.

Likewise, when building Superman to fit within the confines of a campaign, the GM doesn't give a player carte blanche. Instead he says "Here are the campaign limits and here are [starting] points. Buy as much Superman as you can afford and I'll see what we can do". Or he doesn't. In that campaign, you can build Superman for however many points you think aren't nearly enough. He's a blurry portrait, but he is Superman in that setting for the same reason I have had characters with names like Bob Tiger or Argus or Thunder Rabbit or whatever. They were them in those universes. The independent existence of Superman outside that setting is a moot point. Within the limitations of the game, he is Superman, even if he isn't anywhere else in the multiverse?

And if you're the GM in this situation, you can just tell the player no.

This is Hero System. "You're doing it wrong" isn't part of the mindset. Instead it's "Here's how I do it". It's a paraphrase of someone else's tagline, but it fits.

"You're Doing it Wrong!" is more of a power build. Something like a Severe Transform....around 6D6 "Here's How I Do It!" is probably more of a tagline for a Deflection Build to protect oneself from "You're Doing It Wrong" attacks....

  2. Re: Gods with Off Switches vs. Loaded Guns. DC vs. Marvel in Character Design.

Is it really about the point, or the concept, scale, and niche. Starting to look like an MMO PvP argument..... Anyway. I've got most of my stuff set up for Posta-Palooza and I got a good DC type build ready to go as well to swerve back on topic. I'll post those tomorrow since the label on the pill bottle says I have to set aside at least 8 hours for unconsciousness.... Also got to find a game to run that version of Big E in, heh.

  3. Re: The One, True Son of Krypton

I've always looked at Superman as more of an insanely powerful Energy Projector and all the Physical stuff is just to contain his solar absorption and Heat Vision powers. :D

That being said, it's always Heat Vision he falls back on when he has to whoop up on something he wasn't able to pummel, be it Doomsday, Other Kryptonians, his beard, etc So that needs a look in a lot of folks builds.... Byrne also gave a lot of good things for Superman justifying the bending of physics for certain lifting feats as well. Lot of good stuff out there to use, up to and including the line of "I can count the number of beings out there I am afraid to fight on one hand, and J'onn is at the top of that list" .....

Doomsday doesn't even make the list but then random plot device's whom we just used to represent in the DC Heroes RPG as a single line that said JLA BeatDown 30 AP's never should count anyway....

  4. Re: Gods with Off Switches vs. Loaded Guns. DC vs. Marvel in Character Design.

    I Like!

Do you really see him as more of a Marvel-esq character? Seems awfully close to my version of DCU's ElastiGirl from the Doom Patrol.

The Doom Patrol is very "Marvel-esque". It's one of the things I hear about it from a lot of the DC writer types that are interested in tackling the Doom Patrol as well :D ..probably a reason why the Doom Patrol is one of my favorite DC properties also, you can relate to them more as the people as opposed to just the "hero" aspect. Nice Elastigirl build there but you left out the Shrinking and the Olympic Gold Medalist Swimming stuff and the regen stuff from later but otherwise solid. I got to figure out how to do that secondary characteristic adder thing you did there as well with the growth. Sharp move.

When I think of a Marvel style build I like to keep that Marvel tagline (paraphrased) The World Outside your window. Big E is that kind of PC you run into here and there where the player will build the Super Hero off themselves (Common especially to us old V+V players, heh), and Big E is mine so to speak. Layers of stuff there. Some Skills, some Alpha Strike stuff, and a nice Cruising Level as well.... He's got Growth, but it's not at the Elasti Girl or Colossal Boy Level, it's more at the mid era Giant Man/Goliath level. That Elasti Girl build would Pulverize him most likely (Other then they both have growth, not really that similar she way outclasses him heh) though he may get a punch in before she boots him half way across the Atlantic.

Most of the time Big E is running around as a low end brink minus much in the way of defenses (There's been a few of those here and there in comics :D). He's got to play it smart. Sure he can throw a car, (Barely, well OK a Mini Cooper) at his "cruise" level, and he's got the endurance to burn, but unless he's grown, you can drop him with a few bullets. Kicking on the growth he picks up some resilience to the little stuff, and some bigger stuff, but a Tank will kill him. Gotta stick and move as we say in the Boxing Ring, use those skills, set up for the big boot and so on. Hence, a Marvel Build, and one sculpted not to be faster then the fast guy, or more CV then the Combat Guy, etc etc etc. I've got a DC style build PC coming up in a bit as well. Smoothing out a few things on the sheet.

  5. Re: Gods with Off Switches vs. Loaded Guns. DC vs. Marvel in Character Design.

While I plan on using this guy as part of my Posta-Palooza thread, I thought he worked out as a good example of a Marvel kind of Build as far as character design goes. He's a standard starting Super Hero in 6e Rules, going by the schtick that I and others (and the rules in the book) use where you can push past a few campaign soft caps here and there if it's that PC's particular niche (Something you also see more of in Marvel rather then DC).....

Probably have about 12 versions of this guy in about as many Super Hero systems, heh. Feel free to take a look.

  6. Re: Gods with Off Switches vs. Loaded Guns. DC vs. Marvel in Character Design.

Half tempted to post a few character builds..... Been converting a lot of stuff over lately. Keep meaning to get them all posted since a lot of it would play into this thread but so danged busy real world like that little bit of time just isn't there yet......

Fortunately, starting tomorrow I'm taking 5 days off. Granted one of those days is consumed with getting snarked at by health care professionals and family in regards to that but that should leave at least one day for Post-A-Palooza.....

Link to original 7 year old discussion thread: Spiderman Vs. Firelord

And here is the link to the first of two play-by-play videos of the comic book action:

I keep telling people Spider-Man died in that issue. The current Spider-Man is a clone.

~Rex....stopped buying the Spider-man comics (except for the occasional graphic novel) with that issue.

  8. Re: Gods with Off Switches vs. Loaded Guns. DC vs. Marvel in Character Design.

I'm not concerned about realism so much as I'm concerned about the rules being handwaved because someone was feeling lazy about building a well-known hero.

Neither blocking nor Missile deflection work against house fires.

I'd estimate that Superman's VPP is quite large.

Life Support works against House Fires. Environmental effect.

  9. Re: Gods with Off Switches vs. Loaded Guns. DC vs. Marvel in Character Design.

This is why I've been on board the return of Valiant comics and a few other things......

In the end I think it comes down to something like this. Marvel, tells a better anthology of short stories all set in one world. DC, does a better Grand Scale Epic, and their characters and directions reflect that.

  10. Re: Curious about your view on the current state of CO. (Anybody still play regularly

I've decided that, I do not like the new crafting system one bit. Bores the ever living crap out of me, just can't bring myself to try and improve upon it.

~Rex... List of Characters in CO: Big E, The Golden Koi, Expendable One, The Phantom Avenger, Igneous, Bobcat, Doc Thunder, Amen-Ra, The Futurian
