Re: How to encourage RP? When I was running Champions, I found "Blue-Booking", as described in Strike Force to be the most effective way of starting players role-playing. Because they're writing down what their characters are saying, rather than speaking it in a room full of friends, I found they were much more open to playing aspects of their characters that did not initially come out in standard play. They started by just having sessions with me, then branched out into conversations via the books with each other, and soon all inhibitions about role-playing were lost and the sessions became much more vital.

Re: in the spirit of christmas! I spent more time on the inks for this fella, including liberal use of the airbrish in Photoshop to sort of cheat in some of the darker tonal areas on the face. The rest of it's all done in ArtRage, with a couple of custom stencils used as I've just noticed them...

Re: in the spirit of christmas! Next up is Tyler, for UncannyMadman. I think my problem with this style is time based. I'm unwilling to spend more than a few hours on a pic, as I'm fundamentaly lazy. Whereas my usual wobbly-line / flat colour style is OK with that time frame, I don't think this is. I think I need to spend a day at least on a pic to see if this style's worth pursuing.

Re: in the spirit of christmas! Thanks for the feedback Poison, much appreciated. I'm using ArtRage (a kind of Painter-clone) rather than Photoshop for the colouring, but Photoshop for the drawing, rather than Illustrator. Photoshop does indeed allow for many many custom brushes, but doesn't handle digital paint the way this program does, and you're right, I'm going for loose. Since I started illustrating for myself again, I've struggled to break away from the suff I was doing for clients - very tight, very clean and I thought very dull. The wobbly-lined style I adopted with Illustrator and the mouse were a direct challenge to my earlier way of working. What I'm trying for here - and not necessarily succeeding with - is a more direct painty style. I'm not using multiple layers, I'm keeping the "paint" wet and I'm trying to remember all my old painting classes, including building the tones from dark to light, and building skin-tones from a green (or blue) base. I understand what you're saying about it being too messy though, and I may switch to a multi-layer approach to tighten it up a little. Or I may go more messy. I think it needs to develop either way What is certainly the case is that I'm having a lot of fun experimenting with a new style! I really appreciate the feedback - all crit is good - it forces you to re-look at what you've done through new eyes. I know I'll come back to this afresh tomorrow, and hopefully know where to go next! Bob - let me know who you want doing! IU need guinea-pigs

This is as far as I'm taking this one - it's been a very interesting process (at least for me) to soo just how the combination of the Tablet and the paint-y program work together, and hopefully, having learnt a lot doing this, the next will be better. What I think is needed is to treat the piece like a 'proper' paint on canvas piece - something I literally haven't done since art school, so that's what I'll do with the next pic. Thanks for letting me indulge myself here on this

Re: in the spirit of christmas! Something a little different. I recently got a Wacom Tablet to play with, rather than my usual method of working - with a mouse, and this is the start of a piece. Still to be added - lots! ( his hair, his staff, the background, more painter-y detail, ect, ect) Usually I choose to use flat colours for a variety of reasons, but have been feeling a little let-down by the results recently. Opinions and criticism welcome...
