4e Rulebook Variations

Recommended Posts

Back in April, someone posted "Hero System Fourth Edition Errata", version 2017-04-16. I can't find that post (and the person who created the document didn't put his or her name or contact information in it), but after I took the time yesterday to check all the editions of the 4e rules to see how they vary I wanted to share my results. If the person who created that document wants to get in touch with me, I can provide updates.

But in general:

Although the 4e Champions hardcover seem to have had several printings (there are some minor cover variations, paper quality variations, and binding quality variations), they all contain the original edition of the 4e Rulesbook, Sourcebook, and Campaign Book. The errata file works well for these, but there's a ton of errata to fix!

The 4e Champions softcover has most of the errata incorporated, as noted in the errata document referenced above. The Rulesbook, Sourcebook, and Campaign Book portions all have very few errata items remaining. Again, the errata file works well for these books. And this time, there's very little to fix! It's a good choice if you want all the material from the Champions volume but don't want to bother with all the corrections the hardcover needs.

The Hero System Rulesbook is the same as in the 4e Champions softcover. It's a good choice if all you need is the Hero System ruleset.

Champions Deluxe was promised at the time they were ramping up for its release as a volume that would have all the known errata incorporated, but, weirdly, it has its own mix that leaves it almost as bad as the original Champions hardcover. I never noticed, because back then I couldn't stand the layout and especially the page blurred-vision page numbers so I never really used it. I can only guess that they must have lost the files for the softcover and started over from the original edition, perhaps with only a partial errata listing. I made notes on my copy of the compiled errata file indicating which items pertain to Champions Deluxe and would be happy to share them with the author of that file.

It may have been compiled from multiple sources.  From formatting of parts of it, some of it seems to have come from this document, which ultimately draws from a 1990 errata list authored by Rob Bell.  It may have even been a combination of the two text errata files Lord Liaden posted on the thread I mentioned.

GM Joe, that errata file came from me - the thread it was originally posted it to is over here:

I'd be happy to revise it further based off your findings (although no promises as to how quickly said revision might get accomplished - that ol' chestnut about life being what happens when you make other plans... ;))

Thanks to GM Joe's work on comparing my original file to his copies of the books (most particularly Champions Deluxe), I've prepared a revised version of the 4th edition errata compilation which is now applicable to all versions of the core 4e rules.  This time I uploaded it into the file section:

GM Joe found some additional things to add to the 4th edition errata compilation, so I've now released an updated version:

Thanks again, GM Joe!

I'm glad I could help. Thank you for taking the time to compile and update errata for the older editions!
