shadowcat1313
has anybody come up with a design for the Drop capsules/pods as talked about in Starship Troopers and Warhammer 40K and various versions of traveller? I was figuring on a 1 hex single use vehicle, ablative armor, no maneuvering thrusters on the basic capsule, unarmed, one person capacity with gear, probably STR:25 to be safe how would you buy the flight for a dropped vehicle? tancred
Re: Mobile Infantry Drop Capsules Would you use Gliding? I seem to remember seeing that used strictly for the purpose of preventing damage from a fall, and this seems similar. And Gliding would let you maneuver, just not gain altitude. Curufea
Re: Mobile Infantry Drop Capsules But if it is a straight drop only, like the Roughnecks show - I'd make them ablative armour versus heat based damage from re-entry, and acceleration damage - like the gravity generators in Star Hero ships. Mantis
Re: Mobile Infantry Drop Capsules Not yet, but I plan too. Well, I plan to do a lot of things to do with SST, this is on the list.... No FRED handy, and I'm very rusty, but my first thought is it doesn't need Gliding at all, because it just falls under gravity like anything else, it just has parachutes (Gliding, OAF (Chute)). Several of them in sequence, so it needs Charges too I guess, or multiples of the same Focus . I'll dig out my FRED and SST novel later and try for something more coherent and sensible, if no-one beats me to it.
Starwolf
Re: Mobile Infantry Drop Capsules The drop capsules from the book had several features: definately Ablative armor versus heat, Gliding (parachute to slow the capsule), and darkness vs. radar (the ablative pieces acted as a chaff field to obscure the MI Troop from ground to air detection). This al served to get the Trooper close enough to the ground that he could blow the last layer of the capsule and activate his armors jump jets for a soft landing. Curufea
Re: Mobile Infantry Drop Capsules I like the concept of superfluid/supergas emergency braking as well - used by the commandos in Final Fantasy. Creates an expanding volume of liquid that dissolves quickly into gas. Because, let's face it - there is a limit to how much gravity can accelerate someone.
