Re: Handling interpersonal skills

Interpersonal skills alone should never be able to accomplish something that the *character* would never' date=' ever want, but they *should* be able to accomplish things that the player doesn't want.[/quote']

What, no one buys time-shares in your world? :)

Re: Handling interpersonal skills

I know, let's cut him in half with a lightsabre.

***rattle rattle rattle***

Cool. I got a 3...

My take is that the dice are a central part of the game, and I never ever ignore them. Well, not if I've rolled them in fromt of the players, I don't....

I do think that it is incumbent on the GM to rule that there are situations where a dice roll just isn't going to help:

It is a 1974 Ford Escord rustbucket. I don't care what you get on your combat driving roll, it isn't capable of a 200 foot leap across the canyon...

OR

She's Mother Theresa. She won't be shish-kebabing anyone.

OR

No, they are not going to visit London to Kill Phil.

BUT if the dice do get rolled, I think you have to live with it. Equally, if the GM says 'No', i think you have to live with that too.

Exactly... the judgment call comes BEFORE the dice are rolled, as well as after.

Do you even need to roll the dice? If so, why? Are you prepared for the result of the dice, no matter what? Is it important that there is a "chance" for this to happen?

Again... the rules don't dictate the game, they help adjudicate it. If there is no need for a roll... i.e. the GM/Players decide what happens without rule interference... then move on. It happens all the time.

I think most cases of skill abuse probably happens when a skill roll is applied when it never needed to be. The Sidious/Mother Theresa example is perfect. As described, any group of competent players (including the GM) would likely say, "No chance in hell of that happening... Mother sadly shakes her head and says, "God forgives you, my son."

Now Sean's example... where Sidious has a long term plan based on clear deception... ok then. Some rolls are necessary because what we have is a chance that MT might believe him and unwittingly fall under his sway. The dice roll is there to distance the decision from the players who know what is going on... and actually enhance roll playing. The roll is made... and a second judgment call is made, which is, "How do we interpret the result of the dice roll?"

So... if we want to state some clear guidance on how to effectively use skills... this is one I'd say is critical.

"Judgment must be made before the dice are rolled as to whether a dice roll is really necessary. Dice should be rolled only when there is a possibility of various actions that need an objective/randomized choice. Then a second judgment call is to be made after the dice are rolled, to interpret that roll for the enhancement of the shared story."

"wonderfully constructed" sounds like a euphamism for "pornographic" or something? What am I missing in NGD? (I never visit... down there!!! )

Re: Handling interpersonal skills

Just how much is a bevvy?

And didn't this thread have a point at one time? :hush:

First, everyone's been spelling it wrong.

Bevy (noun)

a large group of people or things of a particular kind.

no specific number. We'll call it "Enough, plus a few more" that sound good?

this is not the point you are looking for

Actually... Phil spelled it correctly the first time. My question was actually of two parts... one: to point out it was mispelled by Doc...(subtleties like this are so NOT effective online) and two: to get the answer about how you define "bevy" and you did that for me. thank yew...

Girls in bikinis, or in leather pants...things like that. Mainly in the 'catsuit' thread. Or maybe he's referring to the various astronomy pics I've posted (usually sized to be wallpapers) and things like that. I've posted (and been repped for) lots of those, too. ;)

It did' date=' but Mother Teresa killed it with Darth Sidious's lightsaber.[/quote']

not a problem - I come armed with Dictionaries and Thesauruses and am not afraid to use them. (mostly I use them to defend myself against my English Major/Technical Writing Editor wife... I still lose a lot.)

Ha! Both Phil and I spelled it correctly! I was being even more subtle and playing on the word - that doesn't work trans-Atlanticly! :)

Normally I use American Oxford. It misses a lot of stuff, but serves my needs.

Stupid English has more words than any other language, more ways to say the same thing than any other language and is just generally fskd.

Englishmen and Americans, two people seperated by a common language.
