Regardless of where the advantage is set' date=' someone's getting too much bang for their points and/or someone is getting ripped off for the points they spend.[/quote']

I was trying to balance Phil's idea, but you've convinced me it's too unbalanced in the first place. One of those things that sounds good, and looks good on paper, but doesn't work out too well mathematically.

Hm' date=' a -0 limitation then?[/quote']

Only in an all-mentalist campaign, perhaps. Otherwise, you primarily use it on non-mentalists, so it is an advantage.

Let's assume I have a character with 25 Ego. Let's further assume the campaign average is 15, so on average, he gets +2d6. What's the advantage?

If it's +1/4, the character's 4d6 telepathy gets, on average, a 2d6 boost for the cost of 1d6.

Actually, it's for the cost of 1d6 + 10 EGO. And 4d6 is not enough to do anything on an average roll, vs. 15 EGO.

Of course, then the character's 12d6 Mind Control is pretty overpriced at 90 points - he could have had 18d6 Mind Control that works on everyone instead of an average of 14d6.

Equivalent to 12d6 HA + 30 STR. Yes, there is a range of appropriate values beyond which it costs too much and below which it costs too little. My only point was that "EGO Adds" is analogous to "STR Adds".

I think the effect is better modeled by buying extra dice of the attack power, and limiting it to be effective only to the extent of the spread in Ego. Those dice will have a variety of levels of limitation, of course, depending on how often that difference in Ego will show up.

Proably the best solution.

How are you defining "mentalist?"

As has been pointed out, it's basically an advantage if your EGO is higher than your average target (which it usually would be, if you want to take it at all) and a limitation if your EGO is lower than your average target.

Whether your targets are likely to have Mental Powers or not is irrelevant, only what their EGO is likely to be.

Hrm . . . thought on this:

If the mentalist takes "Based On CON" for their power, the target's EGO does not do double duty for purposes of resisting an effect.
