Brave New World

The Song Remains the Same....

In the early 1960’s Anton Ricek was a doctoral studies student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A gifted, yet dour man; he had pulled himself up from …okay his family had money; but they were idiots and he abandoned them to make his own way.

It was here he was in his element. His pompous nature was tolerated and his genius appreciated. It wasn’t until the scion of a wealthy family arrived and challenged Anton’s place as Big Mind on Campus that things started to go badly.

The rival was a younger, handsomer, friendlier man named Maximillian (Max) Kilroy.

Kilroy and Ricek rubbed each other the wrong way almost immediately. And during their time at MIT they formed the core ideals that would vie for the fate of the world.

What do you wanna do with your life!...

Ricek struck first. A brilliant medical and biological scientist, he also proved to have a keen insight in to psychology and propaganda. Changing his surname to Righteous (a nickname that Kilroy had given him that instead of insulting him, he took as a badge of honor), Anton began his meteoric rise to power. Dr. Righteous wrote a number of books about the decay of American Society, he blamed feminism, immigration, guns, and mostly youthful rebellion and Rock N Roll (Don’t even get him started on Rap Music) as the driving the great nation into the gutter. He managed to find several politicians who held similar beliefs and through them began a movement to better America via stronger authority figures. By 1976 he had succeeded in getting one of his Moral Majority candidates (running as an independent no less) into the Presidency. President Smith was a perfect pawn. He named Dr. Righteous to a cabinet post and they went about changing things; often outside of the law.

Righteous and his underlings, pawns, partners, and patsies were dubbed by their enemies as the “Right Brigade”. They managed to derail the youth and civil right movements and with the help of a few big business partners (notably the RIAA) they pushed rock music almost completely out of America.

The backlash against Righteous happened almost immediately, but due to a perfect storm of legal and criminal tactics, Righteous turned it back and he has pretty much assumed the power behind the throne of America.

America has turned back somewhat into an isolationist nation. Freedom is given lip service but, by and large there are only a few pockets of “paradise” in the nation surrounded by unhappy citizens living in drab, colorless lives.

I'm Holding out for a Hero till the Morning Light...

In the early eighties, a new resistance has arisen. A few rebellious men and women with determination and talent have begun to chip away at the “New America”. On the east coast, Max Kilroy and his “Band” Styx has renewed the rivalry with a violent ferocity, A group of powerful beings, apparently humans bonded with entities from another reality, calling themselves KISS have performed concerts and battled agents both of the government and possibly extra-dimensional entities across the north east. Buckaroo Banzai and his popular Hong Kong Cavaliers constantly raise hell. (Rumors of Dr. Banzai and Kilroy being childhood friends turned rivals abound and the two groups have decidedly cool relations)

In the concrete jungles of America’s “middle class”, lurk the King of Fools and his followers.

But that’s not all. All over the world things are different; frightening, magical, monstrous, and delightful, we’re in a world of adventure. It’s a crazy world, teetering ever closer to a new millennium…

The Official Handbook to the Rockerverse

Dr. Righteous: Currently the most powerful man in America. Dr Righteous is a genius and an evil one at that. A master of medicine and genetics he has developed human cloning techniques, can genetically engineer superpowers, and has a host of chemical and biological weapons at his disposal. Secretly longs for a perfect bride to rule (from the shadows) at his side.

Dr. Abner Devereaux: The one time "Phantom of the Park"; Devereaux is a robotics expert who tried to turn the world against rock music in 1978. He tackled the mystical super powered band KISS and attempted to replace them with android duplicates. He was ultimately defeated. Dr. Righteous, who had been an inspiration to Dr. Devereaux engineered his early release and he joined the Right Brigade. He is far less bombastic than his mentor/superior and his drive and genius are easy to overlook.

Lieutenant Vanish: One of Dr. Righteous' personal assistants/enforcers/assassins. Vanish is a master of stealth and has powers of desolidification and invisibility, making him broken in many campaigns. If he were a PC. :) He is a skilled hand to hand combatant and maintains a cool personae, he rarely speaks unless spoken to.

Colonel Hyde: Given bestial strength and prowess by his boss. Col. Hyde is Dr. Righteous' bodyguard/heavy. Not nearly as dim as he pretends to be, he takes savage delight in playing with his victims. He is a brutal, evil man.

Cold War: A fellow 'volunteer' from Operation Prototype, the faux-Pentagon super solider project. Cold War is the perfect espionage agent.

Captain Howdy: Another Operation Prototype refugee. Captain Howdy was a member of Dr. Righteous' minions for a while, but his obsession with children's shows turned out to be the outward signs of his obsession with children. He was captured and imprisoned to keep him from drawing unwanted attention to them. He has "Escaped" a few times, and acts on his own, often followed by a rash of public hand wringing and cries for more control by Dr. Righteous and his legion of mouth pieces. For his part Captain Howdy has earned the enmity of the King of Fools. They have met on a few occasions and Captain Howdy hates/fears him.

God of Thunder: Claims to be an amalgam of many mythological sky gods, Thor, Zeus, Apu-Illapu (Incan), Donar, Dongo, Hadad, Lei-Gong, you name em, he claims em. What is known is that God of Thunder has a mad on for the Demon of KISS, that he's very powerful physically and can summon storms and lightning. He has recently been seen in the company of other KISS enemies, it is unknown if they consider themselves a team.

The Queen of Spades: In many ways, The Queen is Kilroy's opposite number and might have been the love of his life if she hadn't tried to control, and then (when that didn't work) kill him. She is criminal royalty in Europe; she hails from a tiny eastern European nation but now makes her home in London.

Mr. Roboto: The Queen's Knight. He is a sentient robot (or really close) who has been programed to act like Kilroy. (if Kilroy was slavishly devoted to the Queen and enjoyed tormenting people)

Witch Wolf: A were wolf sorceress, kind of. Her clan has long since integrated the wolf spirit (as they call it) into their beings. The have "Lost" the ability to transform into wolves but are permanently infused with the power, as a result they are highly resistant to damage, physically powerful, can communicate with canines, have pointed ears and long bushy tails. (the latter is concealable, but it takes some effort.

The Serpent: A wannabe crime lord in South America. He's personally powerful but his organization is in its infancy.

Fallen Angel: The Queen's (other) Knight; Fallen Angel is apparently Max Kilroy's heretofore unknown half brother. He has been raised to hate his brother and father with a passion. He serves the Queen as consort and knight. He and Mr. Roboto also serve to illustrate the Queen's obsession with her old boyfriend.

Homewrecker: A clone of Lorelai Kilroy created by Dr. Righteous to be his perfect bride. However, like the real thing, Homewrecker was not having any of that. She is as obsessed with destroying Lorelai as Fallen Angel is with destroying Kilroy. Uses really keen gadges. Wants to go to Avalon-2.

OHTTRU: Good Guys Version

Maximillian "Max" Kilroy: Leader of the Band. A Doc Savage style superhero/Band leader. Max possesses legendary physical might and is something of a micro brick martial artist. He's also a gadgeteer par excellence and a great performer and musician. He's a so so songwriter.

The Man of Miracles: (sometimes called Miracle Man, but not to his face because he will correct you). He's a fantastic showman and escape artist/aerialist/fighter. He's a gifted performer with a taste for theatrics and bombast. He's something of a control freak. Possesses superhuman agility. Has a past with Dr. Righteous he won't talk about. Real Name: Dennis De Young.

Renegade: He's a super-soldier. He's a rock star. He was one of the original Operation Prototype "volunteers". Though he looks like a skinny prettyboy, he can kick most asses with impunity. Enhanced physical characteristics, combat expert, nigh mythical combat abilities. Real name: Thomas "Tommy" Shaw.

Snowblind: Claims to be the son of a Norse Ice Giant. King of Cool. A very clever cold projecter with low level superhuman might. A good musician and a clever conversationalist. He has some secrets that weigh heavily on him

Real Name: Chuck Panozzo

Superstar: A former rocket scientist given cosmic power in an accident. He's got a powerful personality and the power cosmic to back it up. Real Name: James Young

Blue Collar Man: A working class wunderkind (musically at least) was transformed after being on the wrong side of a fist fight with Mr. Roboto. The experimental medical treatments gave him superhuman strength and durability.

Real Name: Glenn Burtnick

Midnight Ride: A cocky, devil may care speedster. Real Name John Cerewleski

Boom Child: A rough and tumble brawler with localized concussive blasts. The perfect powerset for a drummer. Real Name John Panozzo

Rain: Hydrokinetic Percussionist/Drummer. Real Name: Todd Sucherman

Outsider: Scottish born, Canadian raised, a roguish swordsman/martial artist. World class pianist and a frontman of gregarious nature. Real Name: Lawrence Gowan.

Lady: Occasionally called Lady Lorelai. The cousin of Max and a member of the nobility on Avalon-2 an extra-dimensional Camelot. She wields magic technology common there. Like her cousin she is heaped in the family lore and traditions for exploration and evil bashing. Suffers a bit from stage fright.

The King of Fools: A street hero with a small army of ragamuffin warriors at his side. Fights the good fight from the bowels of New York City. Has taken the capture or destruction of Captain Howdy as his personal mission. Think Tarzan of New York. Real Name Unknown.

Earl of Roseland: A "gang lord" of Chicago. A Robin-Hood inspired outlaw archer.

The Gypsy Queen: Heroic wiccan heroine who fights along the US/Canadian Boarder. Enemy of the Canadian monster, Mirror Man.

The Muse: Mysterious benefactor of musician/adventurers everywhere. Has never been seen in combat but no one wants to mess with her.

Miss America: A disgraced former beauty queen who became a superheroine rather than an actress. In the morally rigid USA of the 1980's, she was undone by risque pictures taken when she was a teen. Devastated, she was easy pickings for Dr. Righteous. However, that relationship only bestowed her with the strength to turn her life around. Popular brick-ette.

Golden Lark: A lovely singer who chose rock music over Opera. Has had an on again off again love affair with Kilroy. She found herself in the possession of what appears to be an artifact of ancient Egyptian origin. It has given her sonic powers. Real Name: Pat Benetar.

Re: Brave New World

Oops!

In the villainous side, I forgot:

Grand Illusion: The Rockerverse answer to Glorious Godfrey. A master of propaganda and deceit. He's supernaturally persuasive. Can alter his physical, mental, and even spiritual "appearance".

Mr. Blackwell: he's not well, and we can tell. Mr. Blackwell is a sorcerous cult leader for other world entities. He also leads the RIAA. Now we know.

Re: Brave New World

Chain Reaction: An anarchist world hater with telekinesis. However, due to his less than stable mentality, he can only affect chains. This is good enough for him. After his first appearance, fighting against the Hong Kong Cavaliers his powers seemed more mystically bent. He appears to be able to summon endless lengths of chain. Any material he can dream of.

Re: Brave New World

Unsubstantiated Rumors and Conspiracy Theories:

The Right Brigade is actually behind the deaths of:

John Lennon

Jimmie Hendrix

John Bonham

Keith Moon

and Bon Scott

The deaths were meant to demoralize and fracture the fan bases (but failed utterly), and in the case of the Who and Led Zeppelin destroy the bands. It failed with the former but succeeded with the latter.

In the Rockerverse, most bands that have any kind of following are targeted by Righteous (even if they're not US bands). He's been trying for a decade to get Bruce Springsteen. Also, outside the US, the RIAA has its hands in the international music industry. Blackwell doesn't play around. He's eliminated rivals and musicians who've stood in his way. He could be an even bigger threat to the world than Righteous...but for now that's merely conjecture.

Re: Brave New World

KISS: The four founding members of KISS, known publically as the Demon, Starchild, the Catman, and the Celestial (formerly Space Man) have had a back and forth battle with Blackwell and his minions, notably Void and Black Diamond. They've also battled The God of Thunder, Deuce, Strutter, The Psycho Circus, and more.

For a brief time the Catman and The Celestial were captured by Blackwell and held in prison dimensions. The Demon and Starchild managed to summon replacements, known as the Pharaoh and the Hawk. The Hawk was slain by Void and in turn replaced by the Fox. They released the imprisoned members and the substitutes seemingly disappeared. But rumors have seen them pop up again on occasion.

Re: Brave New World

Snowblind and Boom Child sound like two of the members of Deathstroke, the ancient Hero Games villain team. JmOz has been updating guys like that to 5th; maybe you can just nab them and hero them up?

So, in the Rockverse, what happened to The Lizard King? howzabout Pearl?

Is there a spiky haired blond enemy of Dr. Righteous stirring up trouble in the London underground as Rebel Yell?

Inquiring minds, ya know....
