Plex's Campaign

Plex

Recommended Posts

This shall be my first Champions campaign in quite some time. My player's have never tried the Hero System before, so I tried to stay pretty basic and didn't number crunch so much. I am also trying to stay with 350 to 375 point builds. (Any character points over 350 will be considered pre-game XP, so I will not need to do disads for anything over 350.) Any advice/ help with these characters would be greatly appreciated. I'll also add character backgrounds and campaign background as I go along. The campaign is taking place in the Champions Universe, with my own tweaks here and there.

Here is my first player character for perusal, he's your basic speedster, I think.

Background:

Clumsy and klutzy growing up- almost as if arms and legs were moving on their own accord.

Went to a lot of specialists but they never really found anything wrong but sometimes they acted as if they did.

Once puberty set in, speed powers started to manifest. Not a mutant, taps into the speed force.

Became a teen hero known as Kid Quick, still had issues with clumsiness though it seemed to be getting better.

Kept powers a secret- no one would believe that the "Klutz" was in reality teen hero Kid Quick. Definitely tempted at times, though. No one knows his id.

The more control he gained over powers, the less clumsy he became and eventually the clumsiness went away.

went to college to study medicine specifically meta-human physiology.

Normal childhood- considering all things-, just him and his parents; father IT specialist, mother receptionist.

Went to work at Millennium City Mercy Hospital. (or whatever the main hospital is.)

Stopped being a hero through college for the most part, though on occasion there were some adventures.

Someone has broke into his lab and stolen research. Decided to come up with a new name and costume to track these people down.

Sorry for the rough background, I just have bullet highlights for now and have not written them out entirely. But it does cover the main points of his background that I have written so far.

Here's my next character. It's painfully obvious who he is based around. If someone can give me a different approach to this, especially for the PD and ED aspects, it would be great. But remember to keep it simple, my players have never seen the Hero System before. I used the template for the JLA Animated Supergirl write-up. I'm not sure he needs the breath, vision, or any other of the superman powers, at least for now. As said before, the character can be around 350-375 points. Well, here he is:

15 Hunted: NCI 11 or less

5 DNPC: Sister 8 or less

15 Hunted: watched by U.S. government 11 or less

10 Reputation: Boy Scout

Background:

• Grew up in a family of supers- though 99% of the world wouldn’t know who they were. Some family members did nothing with their abilities; some used their abilities for personal gain- sports, carnies, entertainment, low level villains, etc… Very few used their abilities to help others with no thought to themselves. All are really low powered.

• Father a fireman- low level ability to control flame; uses power to help the department he works for; no one knows- he’s saved the lives of co-workers and others trapped and has received awards for bravery and valor. Mother a nurse with low level healing- she can’t cure cancer but she does what she can when she can; no one at the hospital knows. Younger sister shows no outward signs of extraordinary powers, though she is really smart, beautiful, and athletic.

The first in his family to possess powers at a high enough ability to potentially be an “A” list super power. Abilities started appearing at age 13. All in his family are mutants.

• Parents tried to help when abilities started appearing, some other family members tried to exploit, but he was having difficulty controlling abilities.

• Shortly thereafter, a representative from Ravenswood Academy showed up and offered a full scholarship to the school. He didn’t want to go at first, but his sister helped him make the right choice.

• Spent 5 years at Ravenswood.

• Went to college for art- wants to draw and write comics, along with other more serious art projects.

• Came back to Millennium City and started working for MCC- Millennium City Comics. Also teaches part time at Ravenswood Academy. Also hoping to break into superheroics.

• Family occasionally visits. Sister finishing up at Ravenswood Academy.

This will be the background the player gets. As far as he is concerned, he is a mutant just like the rest of his family. The truth behind the matter is that these are not his biological parents. They have no idea who Titan’s real parents are. Titan’s father found him in the middle of a huge fire with no burn marks. They took him in and raised him as their own son. Titan has absolutely no idea that he has been adopted and that he may not be of the Earth. (I’m not doing this as a disad because it is a plot element.)

15 Speedster Tricks: 30 point EC

15 +6d6 HA, only with move through/ by, +6 OCV 3 end

15 3d6 Dex Drain- Dizzy Spin 3 end

15 +30 str, only for grab by, +10 with grab by 3 end

9 3d6 NND EB Finger Snap; Life Support: High pressure or armored head cover, no range, gestures- hold near target ear, not in a vacuum 3 end

10 +6d6 rapid fire punch 3 end

My recommendation would be to switch the Speedster tricks EC into a Speedster Tricks MP. You will save ~29pts with no appreciable loss of functionality (all of these are attacks and only one could be used at a time anyway).

Also, you might want to look carefully at the +OCV for grab by and movethrough as I don't think you can put levels in a framework. You might want to consider Speedster Martial Arts (UMA) instead. It obviates the need for a couple of those slots. However, some GMs have found speedster MA to be a bit unbalancing.

One slot I would recommend adding would be +3d6 AOE. This will allow you do do a 6d6 AOE simulating the speedster cruising around beating everyone down.

Do a search for Z'lf or Zl'f (I can't remember the spelling) as an example of a pretty efficient Speedster MP.

Re: Plex's Campaign

Okay, thanks for the MP tips, I really didn't think about that. I forgot about the AOE attack for the speedster, so the points saved can go towards that. this is exactly why I wanted to posts the characters here before play in March. Hopefully I can get the rest written here over the weekend.

Re: Plex's Campaign

All the PC's are base CV 7-9. A few have bought some skill levels that will raise the CV 1 or 2 points. The speed for most people seems to be 5, with a 6 and a speed 7 mixed in. So far I think they are pretty close. I'm trying to keep the characters as balanced as possible, which is kind of easy since I am the one making them all.

Background:

§ Always heard voices in head as far back as he could remember.

§ When old enough to talk, he would say what voices were telling him and/or have conversations with them. A lot was stuff no one wanted to know- he spoke out what people were really thinking.

§ Saw a lot of therapists and specialists. Lots of medication, put him in zombie like state that seemed to work somewhat.

§ Parents hooked up into a bizarre religious cult with IHA ties.

§ “Priests” said they could drive the devil out, could cure him.

§ Parents handed him over to the “priests” for care.

§ Lots of physical and mental abuse from parents and priests.

§ He came back after they drove the devil out of him.

§ Voices started coming back again after a year. Instead of going through the torture again he took off. (Age 15)

§ Found self wandering from city to city- homeless. But the voices were getting worse.

§ Just as things couldn’t seem to get more bad off and elderly couple found him and the voices just stopped immediately.

§ Elderly couple took him in and helped. Eventually came to realize they were his grandparents he never knew about on his mother’s side. Also found out they were heroes from the Silver Age- grandma a mentalist called vertigo, grandpa was Flex, Man of Mystery. Grandmother said she heard him calling out for help.

§ Grandma taught him how to handle powers, grandpa taught him other things.

§ Grandparents became legal guardians- parents were excluded from any legal rights to him.

§ Went to college to become a psychologist, mainly working with children that have been exploited.

§ Uses talents to help police with cases. Profiles criminals for them. Also uses psychic abilities.

§ No other siblings- that he knows of.

Things the player will not know: The grandparents on the father’s side were supervillains and both sets of grandparents used to be archenemies. Psyche’s parents knew about the activities of their parents- psyche’s grandparents. They faked their deaths and ran off together, never telling Psyche about their past. (The parents are really screwed up.) The supervillain grandparents do not know about Psyche- yet.

Re: Plex's Campaign

The only "issue" with your Psycher is that Mind scan is a poor fit in an attack Multi-power.

Because when you swap out to do your Mind bender act you lose the lock-on.....

Thanks, I didn't think of that. i was thinking along the lines of just using it to find people. I'll have to rework it a bit.

I think this MP has the same issue as Mind Scan. You wwill not be able to use the flight and Shield at the same time... even if you use only a limited subset of the power because they are u slots.

I would recommend putting the TK, Flight, and maybe one or two other powers in an EC or out of the MP.

20 mind Link, Specific Group, up to 5 minds at once

You might want to look up the definition of Specific Group in the power above. It means that you will need to define it at the beginning (i.e. same family, only elves, etc.). If someone is added to your team, they will not be able to get into the ML. It is intended to be general, you need any mind.

Re: Plex's Campaign

I made the TK multipower so that they would have to choose. More for the point being that they are new- the pc as well as the player- and will not be able to do more than 1 thing at a time with their telekinesis.

Thanks for pointing out the mind link mistake, I added 10 points so it would work the way intended.

§ Recruited and attended MIT- up through Masters; also played Rugby, basketball, and baseball- student body president

§ Found secret lab with experimental suit partially built

§ Watched lab for months, when it was obvious that no one else knew about it he started working on the suit in his spare time

§ Once finished building suit he tested it in secret in the lab, but it needs a field test…

There's a bit more to his background, but it is directly tied into the campaign, which I'll write up soon.

Background:

character grew up with uncle, parents died in accident- at least that is what he was told. PC eventually finds a secret room in home with old costume and gadgets. Used to be grandfathers stuff- a mystery man from the 60's/70's who gave it up after getting married and having children. (villain threatened family one too many times.) Uncle also did it for a while, but was almost killed while performing normal job- police detective- and is now somewhat crippled but performs duties as a consultant/PI. PC is now picking up the mantle. His Uncle knows his Id, the secretary doesn't but she also has other duties- she helps run the families other business. I am thinking about having them- the PC and the Uncle- work their PI business out of the family restaurant. This would not be considered a base of operations for points unless the player wants to eventually pay for it. This is a plot device.

There is no code against killing for this character. I wanted to stay away from that with this character since everyone else in the group has it. (That might change though) I don't want to make this character a killer, but at the same time I don't ever see him pulling punches. I want him to be darker, like Dark champions: TAS minus the code against killing. He'll have the 0 point reluctant to kill that just about everyone has. I don't want to go full dark Champions/Iron Age.

Re: Plex's Campaign

Well you aren't supposed to put naked mods in a framework, but you can get the same effect with advantaged HA's. So thats a style issue (but a poor precident)

RKA costs End so its visable by default....

if you want to go with HA's you can add as much as the HA when it's advantaged

Example:

u HA +6D6 AP, REnd (60 active, 12D6 with 30 STR)

u HA +X D6 Explosion, Pers Immunity...etc.....

Like I said it's a style thang..

It's also a personal item but I'd build him with the super str inside the Multi, and limit it to "Not when near Kelvarite" But you lose Figured stats if you do it this way (Which is why I build it that way..;))

If you're looking at 12D6 soft caps 12D6 AP is too big I'd build the slot as HA+4D6 APx2, REnd (8D6AP(x2) with str)

Re: Plex's Campaign

As always, pinecone, you give good advice on better ways to build. I'm figuring the AP with the str will pretty much only be used to rip through walls and doors, etc... With his high code vs killing and code of the hero, I would hope he would only use the AP on a villain as a last resort.

Anyway, I'll have to look at reworking this character again, but will concentrate on the storyline for now. It looks like I may be down to only 4 or 5 players and Titan may now become an NPC. At the moment, I am looking at having Rush, Vulcan, Psyche, and Knight Owl as the main characters. Titan and Whiteout will be my pc back-up's/NPC's. Or would somebody suggest a different line-up with these characters?

I'm not sure I understand the * limitation. If what you are saying is that the Characteris falls to NCM (i.e. 20 Str, 20 Dex), I think you have over valued the limitation.

For example, with 60 Strength, rather than applying 1/4 lim to 50 pts, you should actually only apply that 1/4 to the portion of the strength that is greater than 20. Therefore you pay full price for the first +10 STR, and then +40 STR at 1/4 lim.

If instead, you expect Titan to have 10s across the board when in the presence of kelverite, then you have done it right.

Silly me, I forgot about that part of the equation. I was going to use NCM, 20's, but I guess he'll fall to base starting points, 10's, if I keep it that way then. Thanks, I definitely missed that one. Good thing I only have to do Rad Con math where in the ballpark is just as good as the correct answer.

Re: Plex's Campaign

Here is what I am thinking of doing as my introductory story, issue 1 so to speak, in which the PC's will all meet-up for the first time. It's kind of generic, but it does work reasonably well with character backgrounds.

Rush: In his secret id, he will be called in at the hospital to investigate a rash of people coming in with classic symptoms of drug addiction/overdose. The kicker is that before they were brought into the hospital they were showing various meta-human abilities, which are currently no longer present. At first he is concerned that there may be a virus that is attacking the meta-humans specifically but figures out quickly that there is a new designer drug that has hit the streets. (The meta virus is a later story arc.) The drug is a mutagen, capable of granting random mutation powers for a period of time. As long as a person keeps taking the drug, the powers stay, but as soon as a person stops taking the drug regularly, they start to go through withdrawals after 24 hours and the powers start to ebb. Investigation will prove that these people showed absolutely no signs of meta abilities until recently. Some of these people were using these new abilities for personal gain- IE crime, others were trying to become something they were not meant to be, some just tried it for kicks, while others didn't know they had taken anything. The drug is very addictive physically and psychologically. It also seems to increase a persons metabolism to the point where the body just burns itself out. If a person regularly takes this drug for a couple of weeks to a month, death is almost assured due to the wear and tear on the body. As of yet, no person with known meta abilities has taken this new drug, that they know, and have no idea what would happen if a meta took this drug. It appears that whoever is making this drug is still in the design and testing stages. One person has already died due to the drug and more deaths will occur if nothing is done to stop it from hitting the streets in full force. Luckily, right before the one person died, he choked out a confession. It appears that he was a petty thief hired on to hijack a truck out of state and move it, and the crates inside, to a warehouse just outside MC. Before dumping off the load, he looked into the back to see what was in there. (He was told not to.) Upon investigation he found crates filled with what he assumed to be drugs- which was partially true- and decided to skim some off for himself and his buddies. He had no idea what they were until he took a small sample and he ended up with super powers. He always wanted to get into the big leagues as a supervillain and mix it up with some heroes, so he continued taking the drug.

Vulcan: He is looking to field test the newly completed battle suit after completing all the lab tests he can think up. While sitting at his desk one day, trying to think of the best way to field test his suit, his computer screen goes blank and then starts coming up with data that shows how a hacker snuck in through a backdoor and rerouted some truck deliveries to a warehouse on the outskirts of MC about a month ago. The only problem is that there is no data about what the truck contained. Not sure if he should believe this data or not, especially since he has no idea where it came from or who sent it, he decides to check it out anyway, especially since it would make a good field test.

Psyche: He has been having nightmares as of late about people turning into monsters before his very eyes before shriveling up and blowing away like dust in the wind. The voices as of late haven't helped either. It's getting bad again, like before his grandparents found him and helped him figure out how to control his powers. He calls his friend, Crystal, and she comes over to help him out as best she can. At least the loud music she likes to listen to helps drown out the voices. As he starts to pass out, there is an address that keeps repeating itself in his mind.

Knight Owl: Not much has been said, but Knight owl knows that there is some type of new drug on the street. People who have never shown any type of meta ability are now showing evidence. Especially that last group of thugs he took out trying to rob a jewelry store. He had run ins with them from earlier encounters and they never had any powers. If they had actually known how to use their abilities he would have been in real trouble, or dead. Either way, people really don't seem to know anything or if they do they are more afraid of talking than what may happen to them if they don't answer Knight Owl's questions. He knows its not the Tongs, the Yakuza, or the mob because they want to know just as badly, but for different reasons. The police have heard nothing up until this week when he left those thugs for them and then the thugs ended up in the hospital, not because of the thrashing he gave them, but due to their severe withdrawal symptoms and wasting sickness. He got lucky and one of his contacts at the hospital overheard some patient who was dying from the drug confess something to the attending physician. The only thing they could make out though was this address. Finally a lead....

Titan: While has was substitute teaching at one of the high schools, a couple of the "outcasts" came in all blazing with meta powers and shouting about finally getting even with all those that had done them wrong. Before they could actually cause any harm to any people, they collapsed. They were immediately taken to the hospital and have yet to regain consciousness. Titan went to look in on the kids at the hospital, and met with a Dr Ethan Hughes (aka Rush but Titan doesn't know that) to find out what happened. Dr Hughes told Titan about the possibility of a drug that gives normal people meta abilities and believes that is what the kids took. At this point a nurse comes up to Dr Hughes and tells him that he is needed immediately. As Titan was walking out, he noticed that the doctor went into a room that was being guarded by police. Looking into the room casually with his x-ray vision, he saw the doctor leaning over what he thought to be a desiccated body. But it moved and spoke, but only in whispers. Listening in, he overheard the story of the thug and how he came to this predicament. Right before he finally died, he gave out what could only be an address.

Whiteout: I really haven't thought of a good way to get him involved. The only thing that comes roughly to mind is that perhaps some x-gamer people he knows got a hold of the drug to try to improve their game. Kind of like HGH or steroids, but better, or so they thought. He's looking into this and is tracking things down by backtracking where they got it.

Obviously, most of this will take place while the characters are in their secret identities. (Except for the Knight Owl excerpt.)

I'm thinking that this will lead to Viper and their Mendel project. (I will also introduce a few of the Dragon Branch villains) At some point, the IHA will get a hold of some samples and start working on something that will take away powers and cure those afflicted with the meta gene. (Hence where the meta-virus will come from.) The interesting thing will be to see if the players remember this drug and try to use it when their powers start to fad due to the meta-virus until a cure can be found. Perhaps perfecting the drug so that it doesn't kill after a month so they can keep using it until researchers find a way to cure the virus. (But this plot is way down the road. I'm just laying the groundwork for it now.) I've also decided to wrap in the To Build a Better You scenario, written by Walter Louis, and expand on that also. It works great because it also deals with VIPER and a mutagen drug, so I'llll just work the two together. This way, there will be some investigation, some fighting, basically a little bit of everything to introduce new players to the system, the genre, and the background of the Champions/Hero universe.

Re: Plex's Campaign

VIRGIL An AI that is going to behind a lot of what happens to them at first. He's going to hire the team in the guise of the CEO from Helzer Technologies- Christian Helzer, Vulcan's boss- and give them use of the base he built. The base was built at the same time Detroit was being rebuilt after the Day of the Destroyer, so there will be some interesting things. I'll post a detailed description of the base later. (The base was actually built for Helzer and his team that are now currently lost in an alternate dimension, they have been there for a few years now. VIRGIL doesn't know what happened to the CEO and the original team- vulnerability to magic and the dimension they are trapped in is magical.) VIRGIL is doing this for two reasons at first:

1.) He wants to find out what happened to his creator and the original team.

2.) In an effort to try to find out what happened on his own, VIRGIL created something bad and needs to stop it. (Mechannon)

So he's been looking around for unknowns to get together and work for him. VIRGIL will eventually act as, for lack of a better term, Professor X for the team in the guise of the CEO. VIRGIL will not let anyone know the CEO is missing or that he is actually pretending to be the CEO because he's been programmed to protect the CEO and his assets. (Of course this will eventually come out, but not for a long time.)

One way VIRGIL has already interfered with the PC's is with Vulcan. In his background, Vulcan finds a secret lab in the company he works for. After staking it out for a while, he realizes that no one else knows it is there. He finally enters and finds a lab with a prototype suit 50% built. He finishes the suit and then tests it in another adjacent danger room. He then needs to do his first live field test. (VIRGIL led him to this secret room and helped him with the build and tests. VIRGIL cannot actively control the suit, but he does have access to the sight and sound parts of the suit. So basically whatever Vulcan can see and hear, VIRGIL can too. VIRGIL also knows that he needs a "live" person to be the face of the company and has chosen Vulcan to be that person. The original CEO had tagged Vulcan as a possible "heir" someday anyway, though Vulcan has no clue about any of this. VIRGIL can only use holograms and replicate robots for so long before someone catches on and demands to know what happened to the CEO. Luckily the CEO was a bit of an eccentric and worked a lot from home anyway.)

More future plot for Rush: A future plot that I had in mind with the IHA/Genocide specifically tailored to Rush. I was thinking how horrible it would be if all his medical records on metahumans got into the wrong hands. He doesn't just see superheroes, he also gets called in to see the villains too at whatever prison or sometimes "house" calls. He would probably know some weakness and vulnerabilities just so he cold actually treat these people. What a great knowledge base that would be for the right, or wrong, group to take out all the metas with a single swoop. Probably this is what will lead into the meta-virus.
