The Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico is riddled with underground caverns, some water-filled, others dry, many interconnected. Plenty of potential room for all kinds of cool stuff past that entrance. I remember somebody posted some more on it once, but the only significant reference I remember is in Louis l'Amour's "Haunted Mesa" Great pulp inspiration, btw, even though it was set more recently. Nothing in it imo could not have been easily modified for use in the Pulp era. Hmmm...
