Actually, some kind of limited, open thousands of years ago, reopened now access to alternate world/lost continents would work for any era, and that suggests a thought. Modern gun bunnies play Dark Champions instead of Pulp, because the modern world is just too durn serious. An interdimensional warp in the basement (and, yes, I know it's been done by S. M. Stirling.
