Campaign - Rhymidian Empire

Here is a campaign idea I have been working on. It is intended to be a political themed campaign with a civil war. I would welcome any thoughts or criticism.

Campaign Premise:

Since the Empire formed five hundred years ago, the Orcs and Goblins have been held in check. No major raids or invasion have occurred during this time. Activity along the Orc border has been increasing for the past ten years leading some to believe the Orcs are gearing up for an invasion. Emperor Randel and his family were ambushed by Orcs ten years ago while enroute to Seripan. The Emperor’s two children (son and daughter) were never found. The Regent now rules the Empire. There are some who whisper (very quietly) the Regent had a hand in the disappearance of the children.

The PC’s will begin in the walled city of Serl in the northeast corner of the Empire. It is a border city near the Orc border. Baron Jacob Langdon commands the city and its 2000 man garrison. The city is the last major city before reaching the border. As such, it is the major commerce area of the region (hence the reason for the garrison). Serl is less than 100 miles from the Orc border. There are five small towers called “way towers” between the city and the border. There area is patrolled heavily and scouts routinely enter into Orc territory to look for signs of activity.

There are twelve major noble houses in the Empire. The Empire is divided in the twelve regions, each region overseen by one of the noble houses. Administration of each region is left to the ruling noble house. Representatives of the Empire are present in each region to remind the noble houses of their allegiance to the Empire. Each house has its own small militia, but there are multiple strongholds in each region manned by Empire forces.

Serl:

A walled city of approximately 10,000 people. Almost any type of crafting can be found here. Magic is present in the city, but not on every corner. The Baron has restricted the traffic of magic weapons in the city. The majority of the population is human, however almost all races (except Orc, goblins, & their allies) can be found in the city. The Coy River is about a mile from the city. The river flows in from the mountains and through the heart of the Empire. Almost all trade goods are shipped into the Empire by the river. The river is closely guarded to prevent the Orcs & Goblins from using it against the Empire.

2) House Langdon

3) House DeGera

4) House Elsin

5) House Perrin

Re: Campaign - Rhymidian Empire

House Kohlme

Arch-Duke: Jakob Kohlme

Resources: Wood/lumber, charcoal

Capital: Weslyn

Colors: Green/Brown

A heavily wooded region of the empire, House Kohlme is renown for the rangers/scouts/archers that come from this region. Chain armor is usually the heaviest armor seen in this area. Cities and villages tend to be somewhat isolated due to the dense forests. House Kohlme has invested in magical methods to maintain lines of communication and transportation. The orcs & goblins have invaded this region on multiple occasions over the past 500 years thinking its dense forest would disguise their incursion. However the rangers and druids of the region quickly discovered the invasions and Kohlme’s forces were able to stall the orc and goblin forces until imperial forces could arrive.

Rivals: Salator, Canis , & Galitsin

House Langdon

Arch-Duke: Sedric Langdon

Resources: Ore, cattle, Coy River

Capital : Seripan

Colors: Blue/White

One of the regions favored by the preist of Goram due to it’s border with the orcs & goblins area. The knights of House Langdon are more battle tested than almost any other house. As a result, only the imperial knights are held in higher regard. Due to the high ore content of this region, some of the best blacksmiths & weaponsmiths of the empire can be found here. The Coy River is the largest river in the Empire. It serves as a major commerce thruway for the empire.

Rivals: Meachem & Canis

House DeGara

Arch-Duchess: Kira DeGara

Resources: Grain, wool, horses

Capital: Melidor

Colors: Yellow/Green

The large plains of this region make it very suitable for farmlands. House DeGara has spent hundreds of years breeding horses. There simply are no better horses in the empire than DeGara horses. The light cavalry from region is the best in the empire.

Rivals: Elsin, Belwyn, Jerod

House Elsin

Arch-Duke: Travis Elsin

Resources: Gold, silver, Coy River

Capital: Tal Dera

Colors: Red/Yellow

The capital of the empire is located in this region. The current Regent (Mathis Elsin) is from this house. This region has been blessed with gold and silver deposits. The majority of the gold and silver in the empire is mined here under very tight security. The Coy River runs near the capital, which allows goods from the border to flow into the city. A rich region by any definition, many of the wealthiest merchants of the empire reside in this region.

Rivals: DeGara, Naless, Belwyn

House Perrin

Arch-Duchess: Rena Perrin

Resources: Ore, stone, gems

Capital: Thoridane

Colors: Brown/White

This region contains a large mountain range. The stone quarried here was used to build Tal Dera. A higher dwarf population can be found here than in any other region. The dwarves are on very good terms with House Perrin. In fact the dwarves help build Thoridane. The city is thought to be impregnable. There are rumors that the city continues well underground where vast tunnels and caverns hold the food and water to shelter the populace of the entire city. The dwarven smiths that reside in this region are highly sought after.

Rivals: Salator, Naless, and Meacham

House Salator

Arch-Duke: Braton Salator

Resources: Fish, pearls, coral

Capital Kerstal

Colors: Red/White

This region is the western border of the empire and ends at the Auron Ocean. A large majority of the shipping ports of the empire can be found here. The imperial navy is also in this region.

Rivals: Kohlme & Perrin

House Belwyn

Arch-Duke: Gareth Belwyn

Resources: Magic, silk

Capital: Geiro

Colors: Yellow/White

This region is the southwest border of the empire. The highest population of elves is found in this region. The elves are on good terms with House Belwyn, and as a result magic is very prevalent in this region. While the Navigators Guild and the Order of the Arcane Blood both are headquartered in Tal Dera, many believe their true headquarters are secreted away in this region.

Rivals: DeGara & Elsin

House Meacham

Arch-Duchess: Alana Meachem

Resources: Ore, stone, wool

Capital: Toberi

Colors: Black/White

This region is the eastern border of the empire. It too has dealt with the orcs and goblins, but not to the extent of House Langdon.

Rivals: Langdon & Perrin

House Canis

Arch-Duke: Relan Canis

Resources: Stone, wood, cattle

Capital: Canisnor

Colors: Red/Black

Another region favored by the preists of Goram. This region fields some of the finest infantry units found in the empire. Rumors say the Underking is from this region.

Rivals: Kohlme & Langdon

House Galitsin

Arch-Duke: Dorivan Galitisin

Resources: Grapes (wine)

Capital: Pocerna

Colors: Green/White

This region is full of small and large vineyards. The finest wines in the empire come from this region.

Rivals: Kohlme

House Jerod

Arch-Duchess: Fiona Jerod

Resources: Cotton (linen)

Capital: Karowa

Colors: Yellow/Brown

Known as the Iron Duchess, Fiona rose to power in a bloody coupe five years ago. Since that time many of her family rivals have suffer deadly accidents or gave been the victims of deadly assassins. No one in this region questions her power or her desire to maintain it. It is said Fiona would sleep with the dark one himself to become Empress. Its just not said any place she can hear it.

Rival: Naless

House Naless

Arch-Duke: Hector Naless

Resources: Grain, wool

Capital: Quin

Colors: Black/Yellow

One of the smaller regions of the empire, the prime farmlands found here makes Naless an important region. Renown for its skill in the arts of healing, House Naless has a university dedicated for training healers. Many temples dedicated to healing also can be found in this region.

Rivals: Elsin, Perrin, and Jerod

Re: Campaign - Rhymidian Empire

Plot Items

The PC's will eventually discover the Emperor's two children are still alive and where they are being held.

There are two mage guilds in the empire. They have always remained neutral as far as politics are concerned. It now seems that some members of both guilds are joining forces in order to take power for themselves

An evil god's followers are lurking in the shadows plotting to seize the power of the emperor's throne. Attacks on rival temples have begun

The Regent has never acknowledged following any of the gods, but the PC's find evidence linking the Regent to an evil god

The Orc's & Goblins have been too unorganized for over two hundred years to pose a real military threat. Someone is beginning to change that. Someone has begun to organize and equip the many Orc and Goblin tribes.

Re: Campaign - Rhymidian Empire

Who is the Underking?

There is no Emperor now, correct? Just a Regent?

Also, the campaign city- you say it's a major trade hub.... the last before the border. Where are the goods coming from? The outlying region? Surely not across the border with the orcs?

Looks interesting. I'd play.

Re: Campaign - Rhymidian Empire

Guess I left a couple of things out. The Underking is the crime boss of the empire. He has lieutenants in every major city in the Empire. Correct, there is no Emperor at this time. The Regent is in power, but he does not have the political backing to be named emperor. The goods are coming from the surrounding smaller cities and villages. There is no trade with the Orcs & Goblins.
