"Heater" Pistol

Re: "Heater" Pistol

One of my players for the science fiction game wants a pistol that fires a beam that causes intense heating of a spot where it hits, causing flamable materials to catch fire, etc.

Any thoughts on how to build that?

6e:

Major Transform - Flammable material into Flaming material.

RKA: Side Effects (Flammable Material gets burned)

Those seem like two general possibilities.

Re: "Heater" Pistol

I'd just subsume this under special effects.

Unless it can be used like they used phasers on Star Trek that one time, to heat up rocks so they can gather around them and stay warm. You might have a Change Environment linked to the attack power.

Re: "Heater" Pistol

The following assumes that the player wants this mainly to start large, maybe even very large, fires.

RKA. Add continous, uncontrolled, and the other advantages required to make this thing keep doing damage for a few phases.

Add a Naked modifier: AOE (Decide how big you want the conflagration to grow), with the "Gradual effect" limitation, plus "limited by availability of combustibles"; this power won't work if there's nothing to burn.

Both powers get "Charges" and "Real Weapon" and/or whatever else you think needs to limit the power.

Now, if the player wants to just shoot a guy, he doesn't use the naked modifier and all is well. If he wants to bring on the inferno, he uses it. The gradual effect makes the fire expand each phase into hexes with available combustibles.
