Please help me fill this shop with scrolls. Every scroll has charges that never recover. The more powerful scrolls are under special magical lock and key, and only have 1 charge that never recovers.

Re: The Scroll Maker's Shop

I tend to think of very limited divination-type effects for scrolls, mostly Analyze, since I think those would be things that would be inexpensive, yet in demand on a large scale. For instance:

  • Assay the Coin (verify the quality/carat of coin, to avoid getting cheated)
  • Boy, Girl, or Both (tell the sex of an unborn child)
  • Is the Water Safe (usually used on large supplies, like wells or cisterns, far from home)

I imagine another one would be secret protection. Buy two scrolls, a matched pair. The person who is to send confidential messages takes one, the person who is to receive takes the other. When wanted, the sender writes his message on his scroll, then triggers it. That is a Minor Transform (5th edition rules here), Document to Other Document, with that other one being unreadable. The intended recipient has the other scroll, which has the specially attuned reversal of the Transform effect on its partner scroll.

Controlling: Demons, Dragons, Undead, Animals.

All the above, coming right up.

The Forbidden Scroll of Animating Draconic Remains by Means of an Infernal Beast: Summon 1000-point Demon Dragon Undead Animal (200 Active Points); 1 Charge which Never Recovers (-4), OAF Bulky Expendable (Extremely Difficult to obtain new Focus; In addition to the scroll, the corpse of a dragon is necessary; -2 1/2), Extra Time (1 Hour, Only to Activate, Character May Take No Other Actions, -1 3/4), Increased Endurance Cost (comes to 1 END/Minute) (x3 END; Note: END loss should be pro-rated over the one hour casting time, but the scroll user may NOT Recover any of this END until the spell is either complete or aborted; -1), Antagonistic Violent (-3/4), Lockout (Character may not be under any form of protection useful against demons, the undead, or dragons. Thus, for example, use of the scroll is not possible on consecrated ground, user may not benefit from Protection from Evil, etc; -1/2), Costs Endurance (-1/2), Side Effects (Failing the roll causes the monster to rise only long enough to either destroy the scroll user or be destroyed; -1/2), Incantations (Scroll must be read aloud; -1/4), Concentration (1/2 DCV; -1/4), Requires A Roll (14- roll or unmodified Magic Skill, whichever is worse; Must have at least Familiarity with Magic; -1/4)

Real Cost: 15 (if it matters)

END cost: 60 (1 per minute of casting time)

Few of these scrolls are known to exist, and none knows how the first such came into being as it must be scribed upon parchment made from the hide of a person who used such a scroll and the ink contains meal ground from the bones of a dragon animated by one. The spell calls up an infernal spirit of theriomorphic manifestation to animate the body or bones of a dragon and unleash it to wreak death and destruction far and wide. Because the scroll's user is usually the first victim, these scrolls are usually only used by someone willing to die to gaurantee the destruction of someone or something. Kordel the Noble used this awful power when he despaired of striking at the infamous Butcher Prince in any other way, and the undead demonic dragon beast brought the palace down in ruins upon the entire court of that sadistic ruler. Huwand the Inglorious brought low five kings with their retinues when he brought forth such a scroll the evening after the celebation of his ninety ninth birthday, having secured the attendance of those he knew were, at best, waiting for him to die so they could fall to warring over which of them would wrest away the inheritance of his great grandchild and only remaining heir, perhaps not knowing or not caring that his own capital would be left desolate and abandoned for a generation. Phoebe the Fortunate is the only one known to have escaped alive after successfully evoking this devestating force; she used the Word of Escape to instantly transport herself leagues away, leaving the reanimated Wyrm of Shardwell to ambush and utterly destroy the invading army that approached her home city.

Re: The Scroll Maker's Shop

I imagine another one would be secret protection.

Scroll of Secret Protection: Life Support (Immunity: Venereal Diseases and Conception), Difficult to Detect (-3 to perception or skill rolls for powers that detect magic; +1/4), Difficult To Dispel (x4 Active Points; +1/2) (5 Active Points); 1 Continuing Charge lasting 1 Day which Never Recovers (-1 3/4), OAF (Scroll; -1) Real Cost: 1

Use this scroll for a day and a night of risk free carnal indulgence! No one needs to know you've used it, either - no one's business after all.

and along with the idea of divinatory scrolls:

Miraculous Map: (Total: 76 Active Cost, 9 Real Cost)

Bump Of Direction (3 Active Points); 1 Continuing Charge lasting 1 Week which Never Recovers (-1 1/2), OAF (Scroll; -1) (Real Cost: 1) plus

Absolute Range Sense (3 Active Points); 1 Continuing Charge lasting 1 Week which Never Recovers (-1 1/2), OAF (Scroll; -1), Limited Power Power loses about half of its effectiveness (Only for things that would be marked on a map; not for people or other things that move around, for example.; -1) (Real Cost: 1) plus

Detect Geography A Large Class Of Things (things that would be on a map) 17- (Unusual Group), Discriminatory, Analyze, Increased Arc Of Perception (360 Degrees), Penetrative, Range, Rapid: x100,000, Telescopic: +4 (63 Active Points); 1 Charge which Never Recovers (-4), Extra Time (1 Turn (Post-Segment 12), Time for map to draw itself; -1 1/4), OAF (Scroll; -1), Concentration (0 DCV; Character is totally unaware of nearby events; While map is drawing itself; -3/4), Sense Affected As More Than One Sense [very common Sense] (You have to SEE the map to use it; -1/2), Gestures (Requires both hands; -1/2), Incantations (-1/4), Requires A Roll (Skill roll, -1 per 20 Active Points modifier; -1/4), Costs Endurance (Only Costs END to Activate; -1/4) (Real Cost: 6) plus

Eidetic Memory, Usable Simultaneously (up to 4 people at once; Can hold the map for others to see; +1/2), Recipient must remain close to Grantor, Grantor can take back power at any time (7 Active Points); 1 Continuing Charge lasting 1 Week which Never Recovers (-1 1/2), Limited Power Power loses about two-thirds of its effectiveness (Only to record information gained by the "Detect Geography" aspect of the power.; -1 1/2), OAF (Scroll; -1) (Real Cost: 1)

At 9 Real Points, not as cheap as I'd like....this scroll, upon being activated by the command phrase, becomes a magical map of the user's surroundings. The map depicts the area as it is at the time of activation, but only fades after about 7 days.

I was going to point out that you have this scroll locked up under heavy security:

Scroll of Calling Home the Stray: (Total: 73 Active Cost, 7 Real Cost) Mind Scan 3d6, Partial Lock-On (+1/2) (22 Active Points); 1 Continuing Charge lasting 1 Minute which Never Recovers (-3), Concentration, Must Concentrate throughout use of Constant Power (0 DCV; -1), OAF (-1), Limited Power Domestic animals known to the scroll user only (-1), Extra Time (1 Turn (Post-Segment 12), Only to Activate, -3/4), Stops Working If Scroll User Is Stunned (-1/2), Cannot Attack Through Link (neither the character nor his target can use the link to attack each other mentally, but they can communicate; -1/2) (Real Cost: 2) plus +10 with a single Mental Power: Mind Scan (10 Active Points); 1 Continuing Charge lasting 1 Minute which Never Recovers (-3), OAF (-1), Concentration, Must Concentrate throughout use of Constant Power (0 DCV; -1), Limited Power Only vs the Penalty for number of minds of a given species in the area (-1/2) (Real Cost: 1) plus Telepathy 4 1/2d6 (23 Active Points); 1 Charge which Never Recovers (-4), OAF (-1), Concentration, Must Concentrate throughout use of Constant Power (0 DCV; -1), Limited Power Domestic animals known to the scroll user only (-1), Extra Time (1 Turn (Post-Segment 12), Only to Activate, -3/4), Broadcast Only (-1/2), Costs Endurance (-1/2), Increased Endurance Cost (x2 END; -1/2) (Real Cost: 2) plus +3 with a group of Mental Powers (9 Active Points); 1 Continuing Charge lasting 1 Minute which Never Recovers (-3), OAF (-1), Concentration, Must Concentrate throughout use of Constant Power (0 DCV; -1) (Real Cost: 1) plus Animal Handler 12- (9 Active Points); 1 Continuing Charge lasting 1 Minute which Never Recovers (-3), Concentration, Must Concentrate throughout use of Constant Power (0 DCV; -1), OAF (-1) (Real Cost: 1)

This scroll is useful for finding lost dogs, stray cattle, and even stolen horses

and this scroll out in "the stacks"

Scroll of Irresistable Persuasion: (Total: 122 Active Cost, 13 Real Cost) Mind Control 18d6, Trigger (Activating the Trigger requires a Zero Phase Action, Trigger requires a Turn or more to reset, Character does not control activation of personal Trigger; +1/4) (112 Active Points); 1 Charge which Never Recovers (-4), Literacy Requirement (Scroll's user must be able to write, and target must be able to read; -1), Mandatory Effect EGO +20 (Must Always Achieve [Target remembers actions and thinks they were natural]; -3/4), Extra Time (5 Minutes (Limitation value reduced because of Trigger), Only to Activate, To compose and write the message; -3/4), IAF (Scroll; -1/2), No Range (-1/2), Costs Endurance (-1/2) (Real Cost: 12) plus +4 with Mind Control, Trigger (Activating the Trigger requires a Zero Phase Action, Trigger requires a Turn or more to reset, Character does not control activation of personal Trigger, Misfire; +1/4) (10 Active Points); 1 Charge which Never Recovers (-4), Literacy Requirement (Scroll's user must be able to write, and target must be able to read; -1), Extra Time (5 Minutes (Limitation value reduced because of Trigger), Only to Activate, To compose and write the message; -3/4), IAF (-1/2) (Real Cost: 1)

When first unrolled, this scroll bears lines of glyphs and mysterious symbols that convey nothing except to learned wizards and the most erudite of sages, but is mostly blank. The user "sets" it by writing something in the blank space. The next person to read the scroll will be convinced by whatever the user has scribed - perhaps a judge declares the innocence of the accused despite all evidence, perhaps a ruler grants some favor or boon, or a guard acknowledges that the stranger has legitimate business in the treasure vault, or a merchant agrees to a fabulous deal, or a desired person consents to marriage - or to some less public and binding relationship. Even if the target later makes a breakout roll to escape the scroll's influence, that may make them regret their decision but they will still regard it as having been their own choice.

but then I saw the "more powerful version of the above.." clause, and realized something like this wouldn't be out with the more mundane scrolls after all. Of course, I still question the need to have the "Lassie Come Home/ Little Bo Peep" scroll so heavily protected....

Re: The Scroll Maker's Shop

Please help me fill this shop with scrolls.

Fill this shop with scrolls: (Total: 149 Active Cost, 15 Real Cost) Change Environment (Long-Lasting Permanent), Area Of Effect (8m Radius; +1/2) (24 Active Points); 1 Charge which Never Recovers (-4), OAF (-1), No Range (-1/2), Limited Power Area limited to actual premises of shop (-1/4), Limited Power Can only be cast indoors; building becomes the "shop" as far as the spell is concerned (-1/4) (Real Cost: 3) plus Luck 6d6, Area Of Effect (8m Radius; +1/2), Damage over Time: every 20 minutes for 10240 repetitions ((about a week); +2 1/2) (120 Active Points); 1 Charge which Never Recovers (-4), Extra Time (20 Minutes, Only to Activate, -1 1/4), OAF (-1), Limited Power Only works while actually actively searching for a scroll (-1), Concentration, Must Concentrate throughout use of Constant Power (1/2 DCV; -1/2), Restrainable (-1/2), Side Effects (When failing the Activation Roll; -1/2), Limited Power Area limited to actual premises of shop (-1/4), Limited Power Can only be cast indoors; building becomes the "shop" as far as the spell is concerned (-1/4), Limited Power Only works for the literate (-1/4), Requires A Roll (14- roll; -1/4) (Real Cost: 11) plus Money: Well Off (5 Active Points); OAF (-1), 1 Continuing Charge lasting 1 Year which Never Recovers (-3/4), Conditional Power Making money depends on actually running the shop, income fluctuates with demand and the greater economy, etc (-1/4), Physical Manifestation (the shop itself) (-1/4) (Real Cost: 1)

About once a year, the shopkeeper uses one of these scrolls to replenish his stock. It will fill the shop's shelves, tables, and pretty much all available surfaces with rolled scrolls and scrolls in tubes. Then it is necessary for the shopkeeper and a group of the most trusted assistants to sort through the sudden acquisition. It will take about a week, and for each searcher the chance of finding a worthwhile scroll is rolled once every 20 minutes. Roll 3d6: if the roll is 14 or less, then roll 6d6 Luck. If the roll is 15 or more, roll 6d6 Unluck. A Lucky result is a useful scroll; the more Luck, the more valuable and powerful the scroll is. 3 or more sixes might mean one of the special scrolls normally kept locked up. An Unlucky result means the searcher stumbled upon a cursed scroll; it is for this reason that the shopkeeper will have saved and have handy a number of scrolls of Remove Curse.

Scrolls of "Fill This Shop With Scrolls" are among the most carefully hoarded and secured; every once in a while, there's a year in which such a scroll does not materialize in the hoard. And the consequences of actually running out are too dire to contemplate.....

Cursed scrolls, eh?

Scroll of the Unspeakable

4D6 Suppress Language Skills (40); Limitations: 1 Continuing Charge, Charge lasts one day, Charge never recovers (-1 3/4), OAF Scroll (-1), Extra Time (1 Turn Post Phase 12, -1 1/4), Incantations (Scroll must be read aloud; -1/4), Concentration (1/2 DCV; -1/4), Only applies to speaking (does not apply to understanding or reading, -1/2).

Real cost: 7

This scroll, the bane of magic users, bards, politicians, and public figures the world around, reduces an otherwise eloquent speaker to sounding like a babbling idiot. For one day, the victim of this scroll cannot make any intelligible speech: he can still understand other people, he can write instructions, and he can gesture, but he cannot speak coherently: all vocal effort is incomprehensible by any listener.

You could probably afford to drop the real cost by tacking on a few more limitations, but this gets the idea across.
