  1. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER

Would I be in the minority by saying that this whole cosplay thing is kinda creepy?

Not at all. It's kinda weirdin' me out.

SS, can you just post the pictures without a discussion into the subculture? I can make up my own "fanboy" fantasies anyway.

  2. Re: Storn's Art & Characters thread.

Just have to be patient with me. I didn't do any private commissions for about 3 weeks due to publisher deadlines. And now i've banged out about 4 in the last few days. I just have to go in streaks like that.

No, that's cool. I really liked the one did for me earlier this year, but I got sidetracked and just never sent any more in. I'm going to try and get more to you in the near future.

I'll see if I can get you some descriptions soon.

    Thanks, Storn.

  3. Re: Minor player problem ...

We had a coworker arrested two years ago because he took a rifle from the National Guard armory where he worked. He did time prior to his dishonorable discharge.

I think what your player might be thinking of is the familiarity one might have with those who specialize in military-style weaponry OUTSIDE of the armed forces. For example, at some point the guy knows someone who sells M-16s, so he buys one. Gun shows, private dealers, black market, etc. It's not implausible for a military man to have such connections.

  4. Re: A Thread for Random Musings

I received my pre-qual letter for a home loan today. First time buyer. I have this knot in the pit of my stomach. Half of it is fear--I mean, really, I'm buyin' a friggin' home!--and the other half is excitement--I'm buyin' a friggin' home!

I think I have the chaos I wanted, now.

  5. Re: A Thread for Random Musings

For the first time in my adult life I'm stable. At the age of 34 I've now been at my job for just shy of six years (a personal record), I've lived at my current residence for almost four years (another record), and I've had the same girlfriend for over two years (yet another record).

Maybe that's why I'm depressed. I don't think I'm cut out for stability or contentment. It's a very disconcerting thought.

  6. Re: What about the warriors

Another option could be the development of followers and bases. Warriors and rogues can develop castles and guilds as a place to sink experience points - althought I suppose that mages could do the same.

This is such an underrated area of Fantasy Hero character development, in my opinion. I think this is a prime area of development for any good warrior type. Build a castle (base), hire some soldiers (followers). The GM should be able to RP the finding of said henchmen fairly well, and since the PC is spending points on them they should be relatively loyal. Come up with a couple of different levels of henchmen--one "second in command" guy and a bunch of "agent" types for regular soldiers.

How about a vehicle? A cool chariot, maybe, or a specially trained warhorse. Or even a war galley, if you're so inclined.

Granted, this idea was already mentioned on the thread, but I thought it bore repeating since I so rarely see it used, by warriors or anyone else.

  7. Re: How do you get players to role play the genre?

True enough. And it should come as no shock that none of the other players want to run the game. Still, giving up the game seems like a failure on my part. I'm going to do some serious question asking as to exactly what they want. What else can I do at this point...you know?

    Rob

What it comes down to is that it's just a game, but being a game it's supposed to be fun for everyone, GM and players alike. Turn the tables on them and let them know that you're unhappy in your current role. Don't try and explain the whys of the situation. Give them a general "You know, this isn't working out for me. We obviously have different ideas of how a game should be run" kinda thing.

I'm gonna have to stick with "cut bait and bail" for advice. Assuming that a discussion yields no real positive results.

  8. Re: How do you get players to role play the genre?

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him think.

    Or something like that.

I would have to reiterate what's already been said. It sounds like you have cross-purposes between GM and players. I have very little fresh advise to offer except to talk to them. Find out what they want, what they don't want, etc.

Have a movie day/night and watch X-Men, Batman, Superman, animated Justice League or animated X-Men...whatever floats your boat. After the movie, discuss what was cool about it and what you're looking for. Create your characters after the movie so they have fresh ideas in their minds, and allow enough time for a short intro scenario that gets everyone on the same page. If they don't want to follow that particular recipe you're not going to be able to force them. Either relent and run the game they want or back out of the GM spot and let someone else take the headache.

  9. Re: EC balance fix

Without a darn good reason I don't think I'd allow Power Defense to be purchased for the EC only. I'd likely apply the "Inherent" advantage in spite of the recommendations.

[edit] Just checked it out and it still only costs 175 points for those same six powers. You're still ahead of the game and I think it preserves rules integrity better.

  10. Re: New Player + Speedster = ?

One other way to approach it is to ignore the rules at first and have him tell you what he wants to be able to do. You (or the other players) can put the power/ability together and explain the mechanics of it as you go. Don't let the rules hinder his creativity; use his creativity to aid in rules explanation.

Let him guide you, not the other way around. Tell him to invest in a "Flash" comic or something to get ideas if he needs it, or watch "Justice League" on Cartoon Network.

This approach has worked for me in the past, especially when the person is an experienced gamer but unfamiliar with the current rules.

  11. Re: Bronze Age Team Build

Metallic (Colossus/Kid Flash) –In the future—or perhaps, a future--metahuman abilities are much more commonplace, but also that much more feared. It is a world where it seems just about everyone has at least some power. Unfortunately, there is very little responsibility in the use of these powers. The United States has degenerated into an urban version of the Old West, with lawlessness and vigilantism more commonplace than not. It is a dangerous time to live. Using an experimental time machine, Peter Allen’s parents sent him back to live a better life and to maybe, just maybe, become the man they know he can be.

Peter’s power is the ability to transform into a being of liquid metal, possessing many of the properties of the metallic elements. He can be as hard as osmium or as fluid as mercury. In his densest form he is incredibly strong and nearly invulnerable to harm. In a liquid metal state he is as difficult to hold or damage as water, and can use this form to flow under doors, into very small openings, and the like. In a low-density form he is incredibly fast, able to move many times faster than any human. He can run as fast as a sports car or leap incredible distances with ease. He can make himself incredibly reflective or as dark as night. All the properties of the metals are his to control.

While he understands the reasons for being sent back in time, Peter misses his parents and his home. One day he hopes to return. Perhaps he might even find a way to change the future that is coming. Toward that end he has joined the superheroes of today in the hopes of creating a better tomorrow.

I ain't no scientist so forgive my 'layman' references to the properties of metallic elements
