  1. Re: Game Board Character Pieces

Storn has a set of Minis on the Freestuff page... you might ask him how he made his *shrug*

JmOz's idea works well, especially if you use Hero Machine or that DC Animated one.

JmOz, you beat me to the punch. Have some Rep for sugguesting it.

  2. Re: Summoning [5e]

Ok' date=' a question: Is this a villain? [/quote'] Yes

I ask because it would be strange for a hero to sit at home while his minions do all the work. In cases where I you have a villain like this (I have a fav that Summons Zombies...ZOMBIE KING!) I don't spend a lot of time (or any time) worrying about how to build his Summon. He is a villain and can have as many points as I need him to have. So the Zombie King doesn't actually have a Summon. I just chuck a couple hundred zombies into the city as tell the heroes that he's been busy!
I'm actually building the summons for in-combat situations. When/if the PCs finally catch up to him, he can summon more troops to cover his escape.

The Summoned creatures are normal creatures in their own right that have feelings and desires.

Players in my PBEM please don't read, as you may wind up running into him (I'm building him for my Face-to-face game initially, but he may make an appearance in the PBEM game.

Not exactly... the Villain is an anime fanboy/otaku. He gained the magical ability to bring his favorite characters "to life." He actually creates physical bodies through shear force of will. The creatures are for all intents and purposes the same as those from the Anime/Manga he watches, but they are slightly different. They virtually have no skills. They are vulnerable to light-based / EM attacks. They take damage if immersed in running water or caught in the rain. They only exist because he wants them to exist. If they die in battle, they vanish altogether until he re-manifests them. The reason I went with Devoted instead of Slavishly Loyal was because he cannot make them act in a way contrary to the way they acted in the series, but they will otherwise follow his commands. The mind-link is because they are an extension of his will, but he need not actively concentrate for them to remain manifest.

    Does this make sense?

Summoned creatures are going to naturally going to effected by a Dispel. That Dispel (once is reaches the right threshold) will send them back from whence they came. They don't really need another complication. You can, of course, do what you like but I wouldn't build my demons in that fashion.
The reason I am giving them this Disad is because parts of their form are dispelled, even if the Dispell itself is not successful. I am also thinking of giving the main villain's power "Difficult to Dispell" to make it harder for his minions to be so easily vanquished.
  3. Re: Summoning [5e]

EDIT: I should have made sure to mention that a summoned creature's base points are the total points in the character including Disads and XP. So a character with 200 base + 150 Disads is a 350 pt character.
This is what I wanted to know.

EDIT EDIT: Mind Link has a normal range of 'the planet' but does requires Line of Sight to initiate (and either requires an ECV attack roll or a willing recipient). Adders are also considered part of the base cost of a power when applying Modifiers.
This I already knew. My question is: can the Summons leave the summoner and act at his behest so he can stay safely hidden in his lair?

This guy is not really meant for combat. He has a couple of combat abilities, but he is strictly a behind the scenes type. He basically summons whatever demons he needs for any given situation and sends them off. He might keep one of his daily summons in reserve in case some heroic individual should put 2 and 2 together and come looking for him (I will be adding the Charges Limitation to the power). But that is only so he can effect his escape.

EDIT: New question, how is this for a disadvantage for the Summoned Creatures:

15 Susceptability: Effects that Dispell Magic/Summons Uncommon, 3d6 Instant

  4. I am writing up a character that has a summoning power. I have a couple of questions to that effect.

    1) Which of the following powers would allow him to summon 4 creatures built on 200/150:

100 Demon Summoning: Summon 4 200/150 point demons, Expanded Class +1/2, Devoted +3/4

167 Demon Summoning: Summon 4 200/150 point demons, Expanded Class +1/2, Devoted +3/4

    2) He has mind-link specifically for his summons. How far away can the summons travel from him? Will I need to add Ranged and Mega Range if he sends his minions off to run errands? He cannot create his summons at range, only send them off great distances.

  5. Re: Harry Dresden: Book one points vs Book 12 points

I haven't read book 12 yet. Power-level wise... I would say 200/150 at the beginning and prolly 50-100 points in XP by Turn Coat. Molly would definetly be a Follower, just like Mouse and I would build Bob as computer except for the fact that he can travel @ night with Harry lets him out. I've given a lot of thought to doing a writeup of Harry Dresden, just haven't had time to do so.

Now I'm wanting to re-read the books and do a writeup of Harry for each book :P

Maybe Surbrook's website has a writeup...

EDIT: Nope, just checked. No writeup for Harry Dresden

  6. Re: Need game advice, *Quick*

Ok, tonight's session - Skeletal Warriors and Ghouls coming out of the Graveyard of Heroes. A desperate defense, perhaps with a good offense to take out Owen before he can raise too many.

If there's still time afterwards, then what? Well, the defenses have been breached, so probably a fighting retreat. I'm thinking to a nearby monastery (Inspired by the recent thread on those), beat off the inevitable attack and then counter-attack.

    Ideas and criticism, please?

Is your brother the only PC you have? He may need an NPC ally/plot hook/stab-in-the-back to help him reach the big bad. Other than that, looks good.

I assume that the undead are being raised by the corrupted waterskin.

Oh, the stab in the back comment is that the big-bad wants to personally kill the Palli and has the NPC assist him/guide him so he walks right into a trap *shrug*

  7. Re: Cloud Computing Telepath (5ed)

How about Mind Link and over all skill levels (or non-combat skill levels) with a custom limitation (must be using mind link) and you could even limit it so each purchase of skill levels requires more people in the link.

That sounds about right. Maybe buy up INT with the same limitations. *shrug*

  8. Re: Different Kind of Force Field

I wanted to make a forcefield that instead of having a PD/ED had a pool of automatically recovering Hit Points that could take damage for the user. Anyone ever work on something like this?

Someone has been playing too much Star Craft... (seriously, what you are describing is the Protoss Force Sheilds). The effect you are describing is having additional BODY with the special effect that it is a Force Force Field. The shield's ability to regenerate over time is a limited form of Healing (Regeneration). IMHO, Because this additional BODY is a Barrier between the user and Damage, it would get NO defenses against attacks. Thus an incoming bullet would first deal FULL damage the Sheild, and then defenses would apply to whatever made it to the character. If you wanted defenses to apply to the Shield, I would make you buy it as a traditional Force Field linked to the BODY - when the BODY is gone, the shield drops, offering no protection.

    How about:

Damage Shield: +10 BODY (10 Active Points); Costs Endurance (-1/2). cost: 7 pts.

    [with]

Damage Shield: Regeneration (1 BODY per Turn) (16 Active Points); Limited Power [Power loses about half of its effectiveness] (Only For Regenerating BODY Of Damage Shield; -1). cost: 8 pts.

    Total cost: 15 pts.

I saw almost the exact same thing posted a few years ago concerning how the build Protoss Shieilding. An other option is to use Entangle with the "Does not hamper movement" limitation. Don't have my book right in front of me so I couldn't tell you how much it is worth.

  9. Re: A version of LOST but twisted a bit

Yeah, the characters are not based on the actual players. The internet thing made me think of making this person some sort of diviner/oracle. While he would not have information on the future....there is a lot of information that would be accessible as well as music, culture etc.

I have not read any of Rick Cooks stuff, but based on your link his works do look interesting.

I am also think of this:

Having the normal slots for the traditional fantasy races....but randomly select other creatures (as far a looks and perhaps behavior) to fill those slots. For instance maybe some alien race from Alternity would take the place of elves (as far as nature, nature magic, etc). Perhaps these races would be redo just like the humans. Maybe the world WAS dominated by humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, etc but now (other than the humans) new races are repopulated in this world. It would be a tabula rosa and would set the pattern for future race, interspeices and national relations and bias.

This where I would start kyping races from different books, videogames and movies. Like maybe the Worgen from Wow, the little green lighting-shooting cyclops things from Half-life, the Indowy from John Ringo's Legacy of the Aldenata, The Cheereek and/or Hexosehr from John Ringo's Vorpal Blade series. Take it and run! Sounds like a very fun campaign aside from the changing characters business.

And I just now noticed your location: Clinton IL. I live in Clinton MO myself. *shrug*

  10. Re: A version of LOST but twisted a bit

Sounds like fun. Don't know about the switching characters thing...

Also, I assume the Characters are based upon the Age, Sex, Occupation and Hobby info. If the characters were based upon the players, I wouldn't want anyone else playing me. Which is another reason I don't like the sound of switching Characters between sessions. *shrug*

Other than that, sounds very cook. Are you going to borrow Rick Cook's concept that Magic is basically a computer program (follows certain paths of logic and requires an extensive knowleldge to use properly)? This would allow someone who's profession is Computer Programmer to stumble upon a magical text, and say "This looks like a C++ computer program! I can do this!" Such same character could be the individual who's notebook never runs out of power and has access to the Net (the notebook would be the Foci for his VPP). Also, does he have access to Earth's internet or to the Fantasy World's Internet?

    Very nifty series, btw.

  11. Re: As A Hero Gamer, Do You Use The Surbrook's Stuff Website?

You can download an intro PDF from my website' date=' but the full version is buyable either from Hero, BlackWyrm or several on-line stores. You can also buy either the PDF or the full book.[/quote']

Hrm. Maybe once I have a disposible income I'll buy it. I'd also need to see if my players were interested in Anime Cyberpunk (my last campaign's players consisted of members of my College's Anime Club)

  12. Re: Q: Blasters and Star Wars-type equipment?

For maps, the New Jedi Order hard-bound books have a picture of the Starwars Galaxy with the various planets pinpointed. You could also take a look at Star Wars Battlefront II Galactic Conquest mode. I would advise you pick-up the Starwars Enclycopdias (available at most major bookstores or Amazon) as they have all of the behind the scenes stuff and Condense the information from the books. I would also advice you read as many of the books/graphic novels as possible.

Finally, you may have to obtain the Starwars d20 books and convert everything over.

    Or you could try Wikipedia

  13. Re: As A Hero Gamer, Do You Use The Surbrook's Stuff Website?

Have you seen the new version of Kazei 5?

Haven't had much time for Browsing for gaming purposes. My wife gets mad if I spend too much time doing so. I'm not even allowed to begin PLANNING my Champs game until I get my 2nd paycheck. Well the joke is on her cuz the job I have lined up pays WEEKLY. BWA HA HA!!!

Is the new Kazei 5 on your website or is it a PDF on HERO Games?

  14. Re: ADvice sought: Spirits and spirit combat (6th edition)

As much as I hate to say it, you may want to look at the 3.5 DnD rules for Ghosts and Astral/Ethereal creatures. If you don't possess (pun intended) the DMG and Monster Manual, You can find the OGL Downloadable content from Wizard's Website here: http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=d20/article/srd35

The ones you will need to look at are Special Abilities and Conditions (Etherealness) and Monsters (G). As much as I dispise OGL/d20 for being a blunt-force-object, the rules work with some tweeking once converted to HERO.

I am hoping I'm not breaking any rules or ettiqute by citing that OTHER system, so Moderators feel free to delete this posting.

Also, if you have access to 4e Cyber HERO, the Cyberspace rules are similar to what you are wanting to accomplish with the "Spirit World." And yes, I still have a copy - it is a gold mine as far as I am concearned :D

  15. Re: Absorption of Knockback

In a 60AP campaign, you are going to MAX OUT KB at about 21" (barring special maneuvers or extra damage). So anything over 21" is going to be wasted. Even then, I think I would counsel the player that 10" or 15" would be sufficient for the most part. The character may take a couple of points of KB on occasion, but I would rather have the character take a couple of points and spend the XP later if desired rather than waste the points by over-purchasing defenses.

Each 1" of KB = 1d6 of damage. Each 5 STR of TK = 1d6 of damage. 1" of KB = 5 STR of TK. Assuming the max KB is 21", the power should be appropriately built with 105 STR TK.

For throwing you only consider the Extra STR. To lift a person requires 10 STR. So (from your build) the damage/throw distance is based off 8 STR. 8 STR is a throw of 12m (6" in the old parlance) and does 1.5d6 damage.

I'm thinking that you build the Compound Power with KB Resist and I might simplify with a Triggered KB Only x2KB Blast, Limited to the amount of KB.

I think I got all that right. I'm medicated right now, but I think I that's right.

So you're saying the power should look like this:

30 Kinetic Absorbtion: KB Resistance 15pts

30 Kinetic Redirection: EB 4d6; Trigger: When struck by an attack that would deal KB (+1/4), 0 END Cost (+1/2), Accurate to 1 Hex (+1/2), Double KB (+3/4); Attack only does KB (-1), Linked to Kinetic Absorbtion (-0). 60 AP

This would allows the character to Absorb up to 15" of KB and deal up to 8" in return.

The reason I put only does KB at -1 is that "Only does stun" is a -3/4." Dealing neither Body nor Stun seems to be worth more than that IMHO. It is probably worth more than just a -1 *shrug*

  16. Re: As A Hero Gamer, Do You Use The Surbrook's Stuff Website?

I also have used Surbrook's stuff to get an idea of how to build certain characters, or even to fully borrow characters. When I was running a HERO adaptation of Shadow Run (merged with Kazie 5 for the anime feel) I eventually sent my players up against the writeup for Tetsuo from Akira I found on Surbrook's site. It was the perfect way to end that campaign even if half the party did in fact die before Tetsuo went critical mass. Neo York will never be the same :P

I've also used scaled down versions of the Androids in my home-brew Champs campaign as summons used by a would be villain that could bring cartoon-characters to life (the villain had a thing for anime and videogames).

Maybe a character index on top of the search box would be helpful (list all characters, source, contributor etc and have them sortable by those catagories).

  17. Re: Absorption of Knockback

Okay, now I have my copy of FRED available. Here is my take (5th ed style) on what radioKAOS's player was wanting to build:

60 Kinetic Absorbtion: KB Resistance 30pts

27 Kinetic Redirection: TK 18 STR; Trigger: When struck by an attack that would deal KB (+1/4), 0 END Cost (+1/2), Accurate to 1 Hex (+1/2); TK Affects whole object (-1/4), only up to Amount of Knockback resisted (-1/2), Push Only (-1/4), KB Resistance Applies (-1/4), Linked to Kinetic Absorbtion (-0). 60 AP

What this will do is when the PC is struck by an attack that does knock-back, he will ignore the first 20 points and immediately strike at the offender. The offender will then be thrown by the TK a distance of the amount the the KB done, or the Throw's maximum distance - whichever is greater.

I linked the two powers at a 0 value to represent that if someone were to dispell or drain KB resistance then the TK would be affected. I feel that the amount drained would be a percentage... so if Leechboy hit this PC with a Drain to his KB resistance and drained 10 Points, he would be reduced to 25KB Resist and 15 TK STR.

And finally, this assumes a 60 pt AP limit on powers

If anyone has another way to build this, I'd actually like to see it. And feel free to tell me how wrong I am, cuz I usually am :P

  18. Re: General Atomics electromagnetic rail cannon

What about the stuff the Space Shuttle is coated in... isn't is some sort of ceramic? Maybe a Ceramic re-inforced with Carbon Nano-Tubes as a munition? Or how about making the round a little bit bigger with an ablative coating that sluffs off?

And if it is the atmosphere that causes Rail Gun rounds to turn to plasma, does that mean it would be a suitable Space-to-Space weapons platform?
