Re: Using Current events: The Gulf Oil Spill
Another quick idea: someone (maybe Harmon Industries) designs a machine that can be mounted to a boat that sails through the crude, sucks it up and spits out the water while keeping the crud er... crude.

Re: Lovecraftian-style Magic
make sure you have the fish people sleeping with humans of the local fishing village making hybrid babiesShhhh! You'll give away one of my Conspiracies!I mean, they're fish-people living in the caves of the Underworld. How do you think they got there?
And I thought tentacle hentai was weird... which is in itself Lovecraftian if you think about it.

Re: Using Current events: The Gulf Oil Spill
I think I am going to go with multiple plot threads tied into the Oil-Spill. Most of them will be background information, but one of them will be actually something the PC's will need to deal with.
- BP pays Telios to release his petrol-phage. The Phagi are microscopic insects that have VERY fast breeding cycle (they reach maturity withini 24 hours and lay large-clusters of eggs). They consume the oil and produce enzymes that break the hydro-carbons down into their base componants, allowing the ATP cycle to occur. The Phagi are also hosts to a fast-growing symbiotic matte-black-algae. The algae absorb sunlight and produce heat, fueling the Petrol-ATP conversion. They also sequester the released CO2 from the Phagi. When the Phagi run out of petrol to consume, they go dormant until they drift into another oil spill. Unfortunately... the spilled crude is not run-of-the-mill oil...
- The Murk was slumbering beneith the Gulf Floor as the shale slowly turned to oil, decaying his body as he lay dormant. His essence survide, spreading into the crude oil, tainting it. Exposed to the sun once more, the essence of The Murk is awake once more - though it has been reduced to wanting nothing more than to consume all life and spread as far as it can. But The Murk is not yet ready to strike - much of its essense is still trapped beneith the sea-floor, slowy leeching into the ocean and up to the surface. But these insignificant bugs are eating the Murk! It must act swiftly if it is to be completely free and spread itself accross the land...
- Chimera Pharmacuticals once had a research station on a small island just off of the coast of Florida. No one alive knows what happened there, as the research station was shut down in the 90s following the bizzare deaths of everyone working there. Rumour has it that Chimera was working on creating a radiation resistant form of life and the radiologicals leaked out of containment, killing the scientists... Now the crude oil has washed ashore, containing both the Petrol-phagi and the essences of the Murk. What will happen when you cross genetically engineered insects, the essence of a great evil and radioactive waste?
What do you think? Are these a bit over the top? I can never tell

Re: As A Hero Gamer, Do You Use The Surbrook's Stuff Website?
We've started the process of migrating things over to the new set up. The problem is' date=' my website was a flat file format of 10k items (images and pages), and a lot of that just won't work under Wordpress (or any other CMS.) So, it looks like art galleries and the like will go to Flicker, and live there, with links to the main site. I also need to find people willing to cleanup the site to make it presentable. Anyone interested?[/quote']If I had the time, I would love to. Unfortunately I have a bit much on my plate ATM. Even if I were to do it, it would be strictly HTML (no Java or Flash).

Re: Using Current events: The Gulf Oil Spill
Now that you mention' date=' [b']The Murk[/b] from Hidden Lands would fit this scenario perfectly. Once he was the Atlantean mage Horgan, an ally of Dalsith the Orphan who became the terrible Sharna-Gorak the Destroyer. Horgan barely survived Dalsith's ritual to draw power from the Qliphothic realms, but was buried beneath the sea in the destruction of Atlantis. Over the millennia Horgan's comatose body transformed from those foul energies into a demonic amphibious creature who controls a form of magical darkness that can seem liquid or solid at his will, and which terrifies those it touches. He can also command predatory sea creatures.Physically powerful and hideous, the Murk has little of his original personality or knowledge left, and exists to spread terror and death. He does still retain a deep instinctive hatred for the descendants of Atlantis.
Wheras I didn't know the specifics, that is basically what I had in mind.

Re: Armor Wars
With the other 50 in the hands of various agencies like the treasury department who have 25 (Rep for the person who knows why) and other groups such as FBIThe US Secret Service.
Well have to say that I did not realise that the Secret Service had gotten moved' date=' which is the reason why I gave them the suits[/quote']They didn't. They still report to the Treasury Department. I think Jalinth was just lumping multiple agencies together.

Is anyone using current events in the Champions campaign? I was thinking about using the Oil Spill in the gulf-coast as a plot thread. Here were my thoughts:
- Telios anounces over the internet that he has bio-engineerer a petrol-phage bacterium that gobbles up the oil and sequesters most of the carbon by feeding it to a symbiotic algea, thus the only bi-product is hydrogen gas. He offers to sell the petrol-phage to the US Gov't in exchange for a) A massive amount of capital to be transfered to his over-seas accounts or genetic samples from every single super-hero in the USA.
- The Atlanteans have had it with the surface-worlders polluting their oceans and declare war upon the human race. The number of shark-attacks quintuples overnight, whales are ramming shipping and ocean liners, and fishing trawlers are being attacked by giant squid.
- Corporation X was illegally dumping toxic waste in a costal swamp/atoll. The oil washes ashore and mixes with the waste, causing bacterium in the waste to mutate. The bacterium spread accross the oil patches, causing them to change into goopy creatures that are begining to attack people and devour them (a la The Blob).
- Oil wasn't the only thing that escaped from the ruptured oil pipes. An evil older than Takofanes was slumbering beneith the ocean floor. Now its tomb has been breached and it is slowly seeping into the ocean, ready to once more consume all in its path...
Any thoughts?

Re: The Last Word
Fibers' date=' much?[/quote']Protein shakes, vitamin supplements, and herbal supplements (one to help block fat assist the body in absorbing vitamins, the other to boost the metabolism).
Kinda like Slim-Fast only the shakes satisfy ones hunger. Just add non-fat milk (or depending on the protein-powder flavor, Orange Juice works well too) and chug-a-lug. And everything is all-natural.

Re: Lovecraftian-style Magic
In the DnD Eberron setting, all aberations (Beholders, Mind Flayers, Aboleths, etc) were living weapons magically bio-engineered by the Dalkyr. The reached Eberron when the Dalkyr invaded from Xoriat, the realm of Madness (the Far Realm). What you may think about is incorporating this into your campaign: The Aberations are the last children of the ancient ones. They still worship their "parents," but have lost much of their powers (and alien-ness) when the left the Far Realm and entered the campaign universe.
One of these factors lost was the ability to drive the denizens of the campaign universe insane just be being seen. But newer generations of the deep-folk have learned to access the powers of the Far Realm once more, and invoke the power of the Ancient Ones (Titans, whatever). They are slowly gaining their powers back, and as a result are becoming more alien once more. The deep-folk who call upon the power of their Gods emit an aura of pure horror (PRE Attack combined with INT Drain perhaps). They are able to blend the matter of the campaign universe with the taint of the Far Realm, creating Psuedo-natural horrors that cannot exist on their own outside of the Deep-folk conclaves (Dependence: Far-Realm Energies).
What's more... not only are the Deep-folk regaining access the chaotic energies of the Far-Realm, but some meer-mortals have glimpsed upon the Eldrich Horrors and been enthralled by the maddening lure of the Ancient Ones... chief among them is the Realm-Lord Cthulu... (Realm-Lords being the equivelent to the Demon Lords of the Abyss and the Arch-fiends of Hell - not true dieties but still incredibly powerful).
I recommend tracking down the last 12 issues of DUNGEON and DRAGON magazine and reading up on the Savage Tide... it had some very interesting stuff about the Chaotic energies of the Abyss deforming the people of Oerth. Might also want Lords of Madness and read up on the Far Realm a bit.

Re: Resistant Defenses
So I posted a question on the Rules Questions forum and apparently had to get a moderator approval for the thread to appear. Don't know how many days that usually takes but I'm tired of waiting' date=' so here I go again, elsewhere:[/quote']I had a simlar problem when I first started out. I think this is to stop Spammers and such. You shouldn't have anymore problems after you have posted 10 times anywhere except non-gaming discussion. Afterwards, you can edit your profile and post an image to use as your avatar on the boards.
Anyway, welcome to the boards CoreGoon

Re: Quick questions for a Martial Artist Powers
The answer depends on the ruleset being used.In 5e/5er up to 20 STR could be added and still use the Advantage (8d6 total AP or Pen).
In 6e advanatage stacking for HA's is basically handled the same as it was for HKA's in 5e/5er (it's pro-rated).
Thankyou.
-
Okay, one of my players is wanting to do a Martial Artists type character. Here are the quick facts:
STR 30
Multipower: 30 Points Reserve
1u - HHA Armor Piercing
2u - HHA Penetrating
His MP has more slots than that, but those aren't where my questions lie.
Martial Arts Manuevers: He only took Throw/Block/Dodge etc.
For the two slots listed, would the Armor Piercing or Penetration apply to the 6d6 of STR or only to the 4d6 HHA? Thus when the powers are used would it be 10d6 AP/Pen or would it be 6d6 + 4d6 AP/Pen? I can never remember the rules when it comes to apply Advantages to HKA/HHA abilities.

Well considering my waist size has gone from 40 to under 38, and other fatty deposites have been greatly reduced, I'd say so.

Re: Battletoads!
By the way' date=' are those hoverbikes in the Turbo Tunnel handled with Combat Driving or Combat Piloting?[/quote']I would say either would be fine, but Combat Driving would suffer a penalty for being off of the ground. Maybe a -2 for every Range Increment off of the ground (so -2 @ 4 Hexes, -4 @ 8 Hexes, -3 @ 16 Hexes, etc).
