  1. Re: My new villain : Panzerfaust (comment welcomed) :)

Is this 5E, 6E or some hybrid?

Striking Appearanc is a 6E thing, but you have OCV listed up by DEX as if it were still a figured characterisitc so not sure...

Maybe just a bad export template...

Also, not sure what your games caps are (if any), but 22+ DC attacks on a starting level villian tend to be a bit much.

The combined CV's and advantages, with the already high damage is going to be very dangerous (if not outright deadly!) to characters that aren't built along similar power levels.

If they ARE built around similar levels, this character is a glass cannon that will be KOed in one hit.

    How big is this thing?

50 BODY is an odd choice.

  2. Re: Do random power SFX games work?

Yeah' date=' this. The point of playing any game is to have fun ... if you get dealt a character you don't like, then you're probably not going to have fun, thus defeating the purpose.[/quote']

I'm a really flexible player and I enjoy a challenge, so I don't have issues with this, but even if so I don't think this is an inhernently unfun setup.

Now, I think there's some potentially wrong ways to do it.

    - Poor communication. This is generally not something you just want to spring on people, but if they know up front my experience has been mostly positive.

    - An inflexible GM will ruin this just as surely as infelxible players. There has to be some give and take and some willingness to work together on it. "Ha-ha! You suck! Yo got stuck with like the worst power ever!!! LOL!!!". It pays to know your players style too. You can do semi random and still give them a taste of somethign they like.

    - totally random power generation occassionally produces wonky results and this can suck. Of course, the flip side is that sometimes turning a lame power into an AWESOME character is a really great feeling. This can be kinda hit or miss and I can understand peopel not wanting to work that hard on a character for the potential payoff.

    - Also, I've been in games where random power genration was used and one player was basically Silver Surfer and another was basically Frog-man. While this can work in comics decently, it tends to fail dramaticlaly in most game groups:

    - Overly restrictive SFX. Now, I can't personally think of an SFX so offensive to me that I would consider it inherently unfun and unplayable, but I realize others might. And sometimes I'm not in the mood for certain things. If I would really rather not play a blaster type (maybe I just played one with my last character and am in the mood for somethng different) and then the GM assigns me "Fire" as an SFX, I'm may not be feelin it. But there's a lot more to the "Fire" SFX than just the Human Torch, so I can probably work with that. "Optic Blasts", on the other hand, probably isn't going to be broad enough to be anything more than a blaster.

    On a related note:

Nobody is going to be happy being Zach-Attack, unless that goofy grin is all a disguise for a brilliant Bruce Wayne level skill set or something...

  3. Re: Ben 10: Ultimate Alien

Multiform was how I was going to do it' date=' just 'cause the Multipower with external slots got kind of messy on the sheet.[/quote']

Keeping in mind that I'm nowhere near as well versed in Rex lore as I am in Ben's...

I just don't know that most of the Builds are versatile enough to warrant a separate character sheet. I think in most instances, you could accomplish the same thing with a slightly larger MP pool.

Of course, there's only one way to find out for sure... time for me to break out a new spiral and start a new project! Good thing we're only on season three :)

Besides, it'll give me something to do while waiting for the fourth series of Ben 10 ;)

  4. Re: Ben 10: Ultimate Alien

Humm...any ideals on how to write Rex up? I would guess a limited VVP' date=' but what would you think.[/quote']

At the basic level, his power can be done with just a MP and a few extras outside the pool. Then chalk the rest up to Power Skill.

You could do a multiform, with each one of his Builds being a separate form. But he's really only got about a dozen builds so far and many of them aren't that complex, so I don't think that Multiform or a VPP are strictly necessary at this stage.

  5. Re: Ben 10: Ultimate Alien

I am currently - as i speak - watching an episode of Ben 10 haven't seen before. About how Azimuth gave St George a dangerous sword.

This is actually the plot for Solitary Alignment, which will air NEXT week in the US...

  6. Re: Ben 10: Ultimate Alien

Well, it was nice to see Fasttrack again. Not too much to go on yet, but I'll be writing him up soon. He obviously has super speed, though apparently he also has some degree of super strength (based on outside info, not really on what we've seen so far). Interestingly, that character is from the Ben 10 Galactic Racing video game, but apparently Peter David wanted to use him, so they put him in this season...

I nominate Eatle for worst first transformation ever. Poor guy didn't get a chance to do anything. He's apparently similar to Upchuck, since his power is allegedly to eat things and then fire it off as plasma projected from his horn. We'll see soon...

This plot with the Forever Knights, Vilgax, Daagon (sp?), the Esoterica and Azmuth is interesting, but some things just aren't adding up yet...

  7. Re: Do random power SFX games work?

Has anyone tried this and did it work?

This is pretty much exactly what I did with my last game.

Ordinary people get powers and are brought into the hidden posthuman world.

    Worked pretty well overall.

Most of the player only figured out one or two powers initially, but they actually had a broad power set and were thus able to specialize and customize the character considerably.

One of the players hated his initial powers set (Magnetism), but figured out how to use it to make himself a flying pointy stabby demi-brick and was pretty happy with that.

One of the other players initially only had Duplication and seemed kind of "meh" about it, but he got really into it as he explored the implications of his powers.

One player loved his powers (initially just Electricity generation/control), but he's (a self-admitted) control freak so he had a hard time dealing with how I built certain abilities for him. But we mostly worked that out with time.

  8. Re: Creepy Pics.

I've only dealt with rattlers and they're not so bad. Not being trained or anything' date=' I just scooped up the couple I ever had into a bucket using a squeegee with a 6' handle. And only because I needed to get the snakes out of there before all the cats got them.[/quote']

You can actually render most small to mid sized snakes pretty much harmless with the gentle application of a heavy book. They can't move it and it's not like they're dangerous at both ends ;)

Of course, my step father finds that a good shovel or barong works better, but they have a lot more dangerous snakes in the PI than we do in Chicago...

IIRC' date=' cats are immune to rattlesnake venom.[/quote']

Resistant, but they still get sick from it.

  9. Re: Creepy Pics.

It's a cobra' date=' not a constrictor. I'd escort a non-venomous snake peacefully outdoors, giving due consideration to the poor critter's plight at being in my privy. A spitting, venomous snake, one that secretes venom as if it was saliva rather than injecting it through a syringe-like fang, is not one that I would care to touch with even a stick.[/quote']

Well, not all cobras spit their venom... in fact, most don't. I have a lot of experience with snakes and handle them quite comfortably, but finding one in the toilet would probably make me jump.

Hots are dangerous even to the well trained, so I'd prefer to only handle them with the right equipment...

Fair warning, the video behind the spoiler tag might disturb some folks, but it's the creepy pics thread so what the heck :sneaky:

  10. Re: Superheroes to Keep, Superheroes to Lose

I tend to be very selective about which parts of published characters' backgrounds I include in writeups. Basically, I usually cover their origin and maybe their next half dozen stories. I make no attempt to include decades of convoluted plotlines and character mutation/derailment.

Trying to do so would be an interesting exercise, but even then I would still select a particular point in a character's history, and build according to the abilities exhibited during that period only.

My Ben 10 writeups cover almost 150 episodes of the tv show, plus some of additional info from movies, comics and various toys.

When I started working on it, he was barely a 350pt character. These days, he clocks in at over 900pts in his human form.

It's amazing how fast they grow up...

  11. Re: EPIC Champions--unofficial material, what should I write about?

Basically' date=' I would suggest including an option to reduce the number of disads/complications each character takes as the PC group gets larger.[/quote']

While this is unrelated to high powered heroes, we did bandy about the idea of Personal Disadvantages and Group Disadvantages in an old 5E game to somewhat simulate this sort of thing.

It mainly came about as a means of dealing with that fact everyone had different rogues galleries Hunting them (aka the Legion of Doom effect)...

  12. Re: Potential issues with a Matrix like campaign premise

I'm posting this for a friend who's not a board member. He's in the initial planning stages for a setting that will involve a premise similar to the Matrix' date=' specifically that humanity is being held in a "virtual reality", a simulated existence generated and maintained by a possible hostile force.[/quote']

...are the players in on this facet or is he planning to pull the rug out from beneath them at some point?

Because I've had players call BS and walk from the game when I pulled a similar trick

(and it was years before the Matrix came out, so it's not like I had to deal with them thinking I was ripping off the movie...)

  13. Re: Superheroes to Keep, Superheroes to Lose

No homages' date=' parodies, or write-ups from me. Never have, never will. Never saw the point, truthfully. I find my homebrew world to be far more interesting than any official comic book company universe, and the characters even more so. I don't have a problem playing in someone else's game that is strongly based on a comic universe, but would never GM one myself.[/quote']

I like my homebrew worlds, but my old days of playing in our version of the Marvel Universe still holds a real special place in my heart.

I'd gladly run that game again if I had players that were interested in it.

  14. Re: Superheroes to Keep, Superheroes to Lose

hmmm... I don't do a ton of direct homages in my games.

The Alan's are basically three Cyclops homages, though they have some other enhanced vision powers.

The Weatherman is my worlds Thor, though he's got a lot of Mythic Thor as well as a good dose of Marvel Thor.

Speed Demon is sort of a Captain Marvel Jr homage, in regards to the fact he's a disabled guy with a super powerful alter ego.

Iron Will is overall pretty unique, but if you break it down I suppose he's influenced by many other characters:

    - Captain America (the host body is a peak human flagsuit with a shield - a former Nazi ubermensch to be exact)

    - Firestorm (two minds acting in one body)

    - Captain Marvel (the second personality is a little boy. He's the moral compass of the team)

    - Psylock (said little boy is a psychic that uses his telepathy and TK to boost the attributs and fighting abilities of the host body to superhuman levels, including occasionally using a psychic blade known as the Sword of Truth)

    - Wonder Woman (the sword of truth is more than just a weapon and has that name for a reason...)

    - with a little bit of Taskmaster and Batman thrown in (psychically absorbs skills, uses a utility belt)

The Vanguard is large and powerful superteam and most of them are homages in one way or another. Reboud, for example, is sort of a Spider-man homage.

  15. Re: EPIC Champions--unofficial material, what should I write about?

How about keeping a gaming group together long enough for these multi-session story arcs to be concluded.

Oddly, the last JLA level game I was invited to never really got off the ground... but I don't think that had anything to do with the power level.

I really, really wanted to play that character too, but he's made a fine NPC mentor in my games so at least all the work wasn't wasted :)

Which ultimately could be a good suggestion for play anyhow. Having low power sidekicks or even unaffiliated street level heroes to play from time to time to take a break from saving the universe every week can be a good thing sometimes...

  16. Re: EPIC Champions--unofficial material, what should I write about?

I think the Authority mentality (we will make the world a better place, regardless of what the world wants) vs the JLA mentality (maintain the status quo and let normal folks solve many of their own problems) tends to become much more apparent in high point games, if only because people have a much greater ability to actually make a difference if they want to.

So, you probably want to make sure everyone is on the same page before things get ugly... though that argument can make for one hell of a game session ;)

  17. Re: Converting inches to mph

So in combat it can easily archive ~31m/second or 114 km/h...

    That's the point though.

You think fighter jets get into dog fights doing only 114 km/h?

    That's only 70 mph.

I DRIVE FASTER THAN THAT!!! :P

Modern dogfights occur at supersonic speeds, something that's difficult to accomplish in HERO since you drop to 0 OCV when using NCM/MegaMovement...

  18. Re: Ben 10: Ultimate Alien

    I have to say

Alpha was a pretty cool looking design in all his forms

    Agreed.

was nice to see Ben use some old favorites and I thought Rex Upgraded was cool. Would have liked to have seen a bit more of the new alien Shocksquatch though...

  19. Re: Ben 10: Ultimate Alien

I am currently - as i speak - watching an episode of Ben 10 haven't seen before. About how Azimuth gave St George a dangerous sword.

I think it may be the one advertized as "A Knight to Remember"

    - it seems to be the first part of a two parter.

That one's not airing in the US til next week, so you'll be seeing his new alien Eatle before us ;)
