Now see I guess I and the group I play with are mean because having a loyal follower is not the same as having a second character. In fact if you sent a summoned creature off to do something you couldn't observe I'd have the summoned creature follow your instructions to the best of their abilities but you wouldn't know what they were doing until they reported back (if they reported back). To me that's a fundamental difference between Summon and 5th Ed Duplication.

The whole point of a Gameling is to send it off to do things. As a Summon, if they die, no big deal, which is the feel I am going for.

(As an aside, I don't think Duplication should automatically be Independent. Maybe as a limitation, but as it is, there is no other way to get the effect I want).

Duplicates don't have to recombine and there's nothing saying they won't recover with reasonable time like followers the number of duplicates you can create at maximum would simulate the maximum number of gametes you can produce if you activate them all at once isn't it reasonable it will take you awhile to creat some more? I'd suggest you take another look at Duplication IMO either it's not as limited as you seem to believe or maybe you believe summon is more verstaile than I do.

  2. without a VPP this character would probably be pretty unsatisfying they'd probably just be another energy projector for the most part since you couldn't really embrace the full spectrum of abilities implied by the concept.

The difference between a MPP Green Lantern and a VPP Green Lantern is huge in flavor. VPP exist for a reason and it's the GM's call to restrict them but at the same time that restriction may restrict some concepts.

  3. That's kind of vague I mean in the strictest sense it would just be 2 detects. Each would only work while the other is off.:D

Discriminatory Analyze ranged targeting detect mass

    and

Discriminatory Analyze ranged targeting detect velocity

Not much of a character really.

On the the other hand if you mean a character with the ability to manipulate the sub atomic universe then you really have an excuse for any power. The problem is going to be deciding what limits the character's power ie: inexperience? limited energy, limited range, ...etc.

For example, an Entangle defined as "Magical Force holding target in place," once it goes off, could not be affected by a normal Dispel vs. Magic - very odd. Not the strangest thing I've ever heard, though. Can you point to something in the rules that comes out and states this? I'm not sure if an entangle should really count as "damage" for this purpose.[/b]

The difference with entangles is always the special effect. The SFX of an entngle dictate how long it lingers. For instance Spider man's webbing he throws it and it's there if he has to get through it it's just as much an obstacle for him as the next guy which is not just similar to CK's entangle but almost identical in SFX concept. A dispel magic would more likely work on magic bonds since magical energy isn't a physical thing no if the spell summons physical chains then they wouldn't be able to be dispelled but by special effect they're just chains so things like escape artist would work and getting the person out is really no harder than getting normal chains off them.

Again first I'd look at the special effect of the handcuff material. Secondly I'd probably have "Special" police show up to make the arrest equipped with detects, suppressors, entangles,..etc designed to deal with Powers.

  5. Duplication always on no recombining the mind link would of course need to be extra dimensional

Each form should take EDM with side effect always occurs (EDM other self) with this write up on both forms then either one can try to flee the scene but they're really just forcing the other one to take their place.

  6. These are all characters I played that were generated from random tables

    Marvel

Shoutgun: A mutant with teleportation powers and earth control his powers so weak he could teleport a whole 10' and the only thing he could do with earth control was shoot rocks (I claimed he was teleporting them with velocity) they were as effective as a shotgun which in Marvel is a pretty pathetic attack. The villains ignored him since he was unable to effect them.

    Marvel

Berseker Toaster: A robot who built himself using mystical power? He had heat and cold powers that were impressive but his real ace in the hole was that he was a supergenius who could lower his intellect and become stronger. I loved the artwork I did for the character.

    Heroes Unlimted

I can't remember his name but according to his random origin he was a scientist and political exile but his only equipment was a giant axe. We decided his culture had trial by combat to establish accepted scientific theories and he had lost. Favorite moment with the character was when he brought smoked meat to a funeral and was bewildered with the ritual of bringing flowers.

How do I build this?

As a GM I wouldn't let you have the described special effect instead of appearing very slow it would make more sense for the character to be a blur of activity within his field. I mean what does it look like when he hits somebody repeatedly does it look like they are hit once but then suddenly fall down as a bloody mess while in his field the victim is still being beaten in slow motion? If you really want that special effect you'd need to purchase Images always on with no conscious control since the GM would dictate what is being shown not you. Although this could also be used as a limited retrocognition usable by others. As far as the speed effects I'd just buy up your SPD to 6 sell down your movement to 1" and just for completeness slap extra time on your swimming. The Images make it unnecessary to buy invisble power effect but if you didn't use the Images effect then you'd need to purchase Invisible power effects even though it will be of limited usefulness since the effects lead to an easy assumption of what's going on. To slow your opponents make a Drain SPD damage shield AoE 1 hex.

The Fantasy Hero book is full of Talents which are very similar to feats and the provided racial packages(templates) should give you a good idea of how to convert different races

This is obviously the meat and potatoes of your question and I have to admit I'm not sure I understand what you're asking but I'll take a swing at it.

    If your asking:

Can I change the limitations, advantages, and active points of a power with experience?

    The answer is:

    Yes with GM approval

    If your asking:

Can I build a power at its full capacity and divide its effectiveness to calculate a staggered point cost?

    The answer is (again):

    Yes with GM approval

Like most RPGs you can do anything the GM thinks is okay the active points, DCs, real points, etc are there to give the GM a way to compare different power constructs but ultimately they have to decide what they'll accept and hopefully the players in turn will be understanding if the GM decides a change needs made later (after realizing a potential problem).

Personally If I was your GM I'd reccomend the Regeneration with Resurection built with Variable SFX and No Conscious Control. Then at my discretion your character will be beaten up nomrally but if your actually killed I can explain how you survived and how hurt you actually are when you stumble back into the scene the amount of regeneration you had would dictate how quickly you stumbled back into action.

  10. I'd definately just go with a change environment then the creation of fuel seems more like a SFX of the alien technology harnessing his power. Change environment would simluate a wider spectrum of effect while still representing a low level of personal control.

  11. Husky would use his 35 PRE to intimidate an answer 1st of all if that didn't work he would probably get frustrated and start beating the henchbeing unless he realized by changing back into Kenneth he could build a bomb detector built with a high-tech detect or maybe even a psychic truth serum or a mind altering drug to make the henchmen switch sides temporarily. But odds are he won't change unless someone else convinces him it's the right thing to do which means he'll probably beat the henchmen into a coma.

  12. While trying to design a summoner magic system for Fantasy Hero I took a hard look at why a summon spell would summon a normal animal when he could summon an intelligent constructed creature (like a personal Imp or the aforementioned fairy.) I came to 2 realizations

    1) First of all a consideration to keep in mind in the summoning cost is the fact that it has a small amount of mind control built in. In the cat example for instance a summoned cat will actually follow your instructions (assuming you have superior EGO) something a cat grabbed off the street (or even a pet) won't do.

    2) A Summon that only summons creatures with animal intellect probably deserves a limitation since the character won't be able to rationalize with the creature or get it to do anything else unless they have mind control or really good animal handling skills.

    Thoughts?

  13. Since it's a Champions character I'd recomend this:

limit your regeneration to only work while "resting." Toss on a 1/2 DCV and apply extra time you'll probably end up with something very similar to Steve's write up.

  14. Actually to show why I ask

  15. So does anyone have any interesting stories about how they were introduced to HERO? I'm always amused when I remember mine.

I and a friend were at our first game convention and he'd picked up HERO from a retailer booth and he thought it looked really good and I agreed based on what he was telling me (the 4th ed cover art helped I mean who doesn't think James Bond hanging with a Sorcerous looks cool). So we signed up for a HERO game which was already in session basically it was a celebrity deathmatch with characters like Lion-O and Mum-Ra in addition to some more traditional comic characters. I even won the game (okay technically it was a tie but the GM calculated that if the lont term endurance rules were used I would have won.)

So we get back home and I'm psyched to make a character. So my friend asks "what do you want to do?" since he's got the book and has actually had a chance to read it.

    (paraphrased)

Me: I want to have a shield on a chain.

Him: But what do you want it to do?

Me: I want to be able to throw it and have it come back

Him: But what do you want it to do, hit people?

Me: (getting irate) Yes I want to hit people with it. Why else would I throw it?

Him: Okay how much do you want it to hurt?

Me: I want it to hurt like a shield being thrown. Sheesh, all I want is a freak'n shield with a change. Maybe this systems isn't as good as it seemed if I can't just make a shield with a chain on it.

    Oh the options.....

  16. I'd say the skill downloads could be handled as a campaign freebie with each person being able to have INT/5 skill downloads available to use at 1 time. Otherwise I'd give the Computer Operator an XD Aid power to give skill lvls (or maybe even skills) to characters in the matrix (RSR: computer programming?) this would emulate a system where the downlaods aren't really how to do the skill so much as a "patch" to do that specific task so the person wouldn't necessarily be able to hotwire a motorcycle so much as they would be able to hotwire that specific motorcycle at that specific time in that specific location. This would open the character of operator to whole new possibilities with a wealth of powers at their disposal all purchased Extra Dimensional with the limitation "only affects Matrix."

  17. We're only planning on using the price list when the game starts to establish some way of having the characters start off on the same foot. Once the game starts we're planning on negotiating all costs based on the port we're in (It's a seafaring game where the edge of the world is a wierd place that if you navigate you can reach the edge of other worlds.

I'm aware the +3DCV was because of size, I was trying to point out you can adapt the listed creature to fit your needs. It doesn't matter why a creature was written up with a certain ability or power it just matters if you think it's worth paying for.

Personally I think the DEX Steve gave cats is a cheap way to pay for what I would technically say were OCV bonuses for predatory instinct, DCV bonuses for size, and exceptional SPD. Increasing DEX just kills three birds with one stone.

I also would shave off the PS:Fetch he gave dogs since I think it's unnecessary to pay for since the concept of training is not the same thing as learning (this is ultimately a semantic arguement and I'm basing my opinion on my work writing programs to train the developmentally delayed humans)

  19. regarding the cat I'd drop the 15pts of extra DCV I mean it's hard for a normal person to catch a cat but I think DCV 9 is a bit much.

Regarding animal write ups in general I'd reccomend using them as templates to make your summoned creatures if you don't think it's worth the listed points then shave off the points until they're the type of animal you want. The same way you shouldn't give points for limitations that don't limit don't pay for abilities you don't plan on using.

  20. Husky would clear his throat in an uncomfrotable way and offer to take the "monster" to his Arctic Fortress of Huskitude. Once he had his parent (is it mom or dad?) in his secret basment laboratory he'd change back to Kenneth Clark (after looking at the science stuff and thinking "this stuff is lame I need to get more pictures of chicks to hang on the walls") and get to work on a cure assuming they must have stumbled across one of his early unsuccesful Husky formulaes. But if they came in contact with a sample then who knows how many others may have been affected?
