  1. Re: Speedster Question...

Buy absurd Noncombat multipliers to his running, buy off the turn mode, and give him the Psych Lim: must move at full speed when moving(Very Common, Strong).

This guy sounds like he is going to kill himself the next time he tries to put a fork in his mouth...

Ohh... didn't think of that. THe PC's could find him, starving, because he hasn’t been able to eat (he tares his food apart before he can consume it) and weakened by that too...hum.

  2. Re: Speedster Question...

It has some humor value, but if it's that out of control, he should be dead long before the characters meet him.

Maybe give him his movement powers and some extra STR at Always On, Full Power Only (-1), and then buy off that limit as a naked advantage. Apply "Requires an EGO roll" to the NA. The extra STR gets a -1/2 Side Effect (takes 3d6 damage every time he uses it).

Good point. I don't want this to be funny. I want it to be (he, he) realistic...

Suggestions are good... keep ‘em coming…

  3. Re: Speedster Question...

Personally, I'd have another build for 'out of control' running. It doesn't seem to make sense to have him run at a speed that is too fast for him, I'd think he'd rarely do it unless it's an emergency. I mean, really, my car speedometer goes up to 180 mph...but I never use it. Not just because it is illegal, but because I don't have the ability to control a car going 180 mph.

Now I'm not sure how fast this speedster would be, but it seems conceivable that that if a fighter pilot can learn to fly a supersonic jet and an indy car driver can learn to drive an indy car, then the speedster could 'learn' to run at superspeeds.

Question: Should speedsters have to obey the speed limit?

Oopss, sorry Jeff, I wasn't clear. He can't control it... It's kind of an on or off thing... He doens't just walk anymore... if he moves he moves at 150mph or not at all....

  4. Re: Would Stargate SG-1 work in a Marvel Universe?

I suspected that the Stargate Project wouldn't work in a Marvel-style universe. Thanks for confirming it.

The NID would make a great foe, if only for comic relief. Although they're federal, they're inept. Four of their people were up to no good in Paris once and were knocked out, bound, gagged, and left for the police by a cat burglar. Senator Kinsey wasn't a happy camper.

Maybe not the Marvel proper but I think it would do well in the Ultimate MU... StarGate Command could be a division of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The Superpowers are still new enough that the world is "used to" such sights.

I think a little tweeking it'd work just fine...

  5. Re: Speedster Question...

    Interesting...

A buddy of mine threw this up on my LJ account. Just to say, I really haven't used, nor experienced speedsters all that much. So I'll just ask for any follow up comments on this as well...

    <<

First idea is to give the hero lots of Running, but keep his Speed relatively low.

Second idea is Running with the Limitation "Noncombat Movement Only." No Noncombat Movement is a -1/4 Limitation; I'm not sure if that would make Noncombat Only a -3/4 Limitation or not. Yes, he can run fast in a battle, but his OCV will drop to 0 and his DCV will be halved.

If that's too much, you can give him a lower base Running power, but boost his noncombat speed. He can only *really* go fast when he's not distracted. He has to slow down when he's trying to do other stuff (closer to the speed of his mind).

Third idea is Running with the Limitation "Turn Mode" (-1/4). That will make him less maneuverable, representing the fact that he's moving faster than he can think.

If that's too harsh for you, you might try a Limitation "Requires a Skill Roll" (-1/2) coupled with "Side Effects" (variable). Give him a DEX- or INT-based Skill called "Maneuverability." Every time he runs, he has to roll or he runs into something (roll modified by difficulty of attempted effort). You could reduce "Requires a Skill Roll" to a -1/4 Limitation and say it only applies to tricky maneuvers.

Were there any particular effects you were trying to accomplish with this character?>>>

So how does this look to all of you (I'd say y'all-- being southern and all, but hey!!!):D

  6. Re: Speedster Question...

Does he have something like a impact absorbing force field or regeneration to prevent him from dying stupidly?

    No.

Effectively the PC's will have to save this man from, not only himself but save him from destroying whatever he hits.

If you were to dive off a 10 story building, into a car, it would not only kill you but destroy the car, and possible kill( or seriously injure) anyone in the car. That’s the effect I was going for.

  7. Awhile back we got one of the threads “What do you want to see?” for the upcoming Ultimate Speedster. I thought of and asked there a question that is really more appropriate here. So now that I remembered to do it I though I’d repost that said question...

In HERO System, what would be the most appropriate way to handle a speedster, whose mind is not as fast as his powers, i.e. running around a city and having to dodge traffic at super speed while his mind/reactions run at normal ‘human’ speed?

Really, the situation would be something like: A man gets hit with a “ray” that gives him super speed that he can’t control. Reaching for a glass of water he would knock the glass over or knock it against the wall; walking to the store he would race into the side of a building; etc…

    Thanks for the help…

  8. Re: Hulk Smash! And then writes a traffic ticket?

I know Shaq was taking police training. They'll make an interesting superteam when they're done.

The Hulk and Steel together? Weird.

But seriously, Shaq was doing it in LA but apparently is/was completing it in Miami. I have to give a some respect to a couple of guys who choose to give back to the community that way…

  9. Re: Steam Toys

Eventually I'd very much like to do VH. It's all a question of whether the sales would justify the extensive research (and thus investment of my personal money and the company's time). Hopefully one day it'll be deemed feasible.

I'm in!!! I'll buy 10! Hey the best game I everplayed (as a player) was a Victorian/Steam Punk game.

BTW,for resource material, the GURPS SteamPunk and SteamTech are 2 of the best. Thqats the system we used for the game. As good as it was, yeah, still would have preferred Hero…

    Anti-garrote collar…classic!

    :D

  10. Re: Pulparize It!

    Gee you spelling sucks... R...E...V...E...A...L...E...D.:P

LOL I'm sorry you and I are ex-teachers! We're back in the real world, where, you know, spelling doesn't matter, or something...:slap:

    Hehe... alright back on topic.:)

  11. Re: Pulparize It!

Star Trek II -- just convert the starships into submarines' date=' Khan into an appropriate villain (I'd suggest the Geistkapitan from MM), and the space stations and planets into isolated islands.[/quote']

Well get us the MM book!!! :P Seriously, though I'm looking forward to it...

Okay... how 'bout Total Recall-- Man is a Frenchman who escapes German occupation in Paris and flees to the US pre- American entrance into the European theater. He returns to help the French underground, but it is reviled that he really is German-sympathizer who's had his memory wiped by Nazi Scientist to work for the Germans. He must then come to terms and decide if he keeps his new memories or goes back to the old…

  12. Re: The Raven and Captain Battle

I've loved the character write ups too. Keep 'em coming. So, on that note, could you give us an "In our next exciting adventure..." quicky list of up coming HP products? Unless of course, I missed that already (which I do alot.):drink:

  13. Re: DC's Best "Bricks"

    1. Superman

    3. Wonder Woman

    4. Orion

    5. Kalibak

    6. Solomon Grundy

    7. Supergirl/Kara Zor El

    8. Amazo

Though I must tentatively include some from the new/old story arch of the infinite Crisis—Superboy-Prime (you know all the powers of the old Superman—moving planets and stuff like that.)

  14. Re: THE ULTIMATE SPEEDSTER -- What Do *You* Want To See?

The thing I would feel necessary is an analysis of speedster disadvantages; I know others have mentioned anti-speedster tricks, and this would me really seconding that concept. So with that I’ll ask this question (I don’t use a lot of speedsters, so this could possibly double as the dumbest comment/question on this thread but here goes): In HERO System, what would be the most appropriate way to handle a speedster, whose mind is not as fast as his powers, i.e. running around a city and having to dodge traffic at super speed while his mind/reactions run at normal ‘human’ speed?

I figured I’d take the opportunity while I was thinking about it…

    Thanks…

    :)

  15. Re: If YOU have been playing Hero since the 80's why do you still keep coming back?

    Quick one...

I first tried Hero in 1990, after playing others for years. A friend of mine was a Hero junkie and almost refused to play anything else. Well after trying the system out I found myself taking other character is other games I was into (Shadowrun comes to mind as the most prominent example) and recreating them with Hero. I ran for almost 4 years a Hero system Horror/Supernatural game using the system and it’s still my favorite… but then it’s pretty much everyone’s favorite who’s here too…

    ;)

    Oh yeah, great topic...

...Promise Her Anything, It's Not Unusual, and the theme to Thunderball (007-- with Sean Connery) and was in an episode of the Simpson’s too. Mr. Burns has him kidnapped to woo Marge when he finds out Jones is her favorite singer, and super cool in Mars Attacks!!!

Yeah, its early and I'm still waking up...

  17. Re: But is it green and glowing?

Just think about it! Animals born with green fur' date=' giant meteors falling in Kansas! Ladies and gentlemen, we're in the beginnings of an actual age of superheroes![/quote']

I thought it was pods that bust open and grew copies of us...:nonp:

  18. Re: Stephen King, Pulp Author

    The Review so far:

Okay, just so you know, I’m only half way through the book so far. I read a lot faster than most, but I travel a lot and am listening to the ‘Colorado Kid’ on my driving trips back and forth between Tampa and Orlando (about an hour one way)…

    No spoilers… hey, it’s a mystery story.

From what I’m told the ending of the book DOES NOT end in a nice neat package. I’m looking forward to that. The overall concept is what will either grab you annoy the hell out of you—probably the former if you’re reading this. TCK is a story our attraction to mystery. It’s about setting a mood not a story about solving a mystery. Yeah I know that really sounds weird, but trust me, with Kings fantastic ability to run with character development, it works very well. It surprised me really. I expected the strait “Of all the gin joints in this city why did she have to walk in here†kind of cliché start to the detective story. Its mood and (quick) pace has really drawn me to pick up some of the other books in the series and see what kind of stories they have as well.

From my understanding the company has both new and reprints of classic stories coming. Again, being on a bit of a Pulp charge right now, all TCK has done is jazz me up to play PULP HERO even more…

  19. Re: Stephen King, Pulp Author

iTunes has the unabridged version available for download, so I grabbed it. I should start listening tonight on my drive from Orlando to Tampa and back. I should get through most of it by then... I'll let you know what I think tomorrow. If you're interested...

  20. Re: Alternate Star Wars Chronology....

We went the whole Japanese feel. Our game followed a timeline in which it’s revealed that the Emperor is in fact Vader’s father (non of this Mediclorian-sp?- crap.) Then Luke becomes the heir to the Empire, ultimately setting up his son, Jade Skywalker to claim the throne. The Jedi become his right hand, the Jinn-Di (followers of Qui-Gon Jinn become these sort of official “Grey-Siders”) become his left hand and the Sith become the Emperors—under hand. Ben Skywalker is the Head of the Jedi Council and is the CO if the Pc’s. He is ultimately at odds with his brother and the PC’s in true Godfather fashion have to wipe out their mentor/Emperor Jade’s brother and highest official.

Is Ben really a traitor, or was he set up…? You tell me. I did this prior to Episode III with d20 Star Wars, but would love to do it again with Hero….The original was soooo much fun, despite the crappy rule system…

If this makes no sense, please forgive me, I am on cold meds right now:)

  21. Re: New to system... character ??

It’s been interesting to read all of this, really. Rathicus is going to be playing in my game. This will be the first continuing HERO System game I’ve run in probably 10 years (yeash!) I’m having the Characters built on the Powerful Hero level—100pts/100disads. I’ve been looking forward to this for sometime and have only recently gotten the majority of my players interested in trying something other that d20. I am still waiting on my copy of Pulp HERO to arrive but I do know most of the concepts I want to do. The games will have a fair amount of combat, of course, but the vast majority will be the Chase/thrilling location/investigation type of game—Hudson City 1935. The only difference is originally, when I ran Dark Champions with Hudson City, my Hudson City was based in Virginia, just outside if DC, so this one will be too…

My point to this is I do tend to run very skill need based games, so Rathicus, please make sure you don’t ignore that. If you’re worried about survivability, if you listen to these guys you’ll do just fine. The suggestions here have been nice for me to see too, as I’m trying to get used to the HERO system again.

Well, quite...start off by picking the right GM :)

Okay, for that shot, he dies!!! Kidding:)
