  1. Re: Metamorphosis

Personally I would let the player eat a tin can as a goat, but when they went back to normal they would be in a world of hurt. This is something that can be done using both methods.

The problem when you go too far down this road is determining what it means to Shapeshift. A player that shape shifts into a bird wants to fly, but doesn’t want to be killed with a single shot from a BB gun.

It gets too messy. When I Shapeshift I want to look and feel like the object, say a chair, but not be dismembered by a single hatch blow. When I Shapeshift into a dog, I don’t want a whole character sheet that includes powers granting me the ability to speak, I want to look, feel, and smell like a dog – but not actually be one.

  2. Re: Metamorphosis

What I think people don't like' date=' and I had this arguement with a fellow player is that Shapeshift: Into A Bird doesn't give you the abilities of a Bird unless you buy them seperately with a "Linked" Limitation of some nature.[/quote']

    Agreed.

I think that is where the true issue lies. Having Shapeshifting act as an illusion allows one to dodge the tough questions, and points to Multiform if a better solution is needed. Want the form of a bird? Shapeshift gets you there. Want an ability or even the weakness of a bird? Then you have to do something else.

  3. Re: ghost characters campaign

Great idea. My one fear would be that players might become stuck being one-trick ponies. One always uses Telekinesis to solve things, another is stuck turning visible and saying “Boo!” Perhaps work on a way to get them varied yet minor powers that can change with time. A VPP for each character springs to mind. That way if what they have works, they can be forced to keep their original powers, if not they can tweak them as they learn new haunting techniques.

One thing that has always struck me as stereotypical for ghosts has been their limitations. Limit their vision, or range of movement. They only view things at night, or can not leave one building that they have been assigned by the bureaucracy. Keep them from being free, they have great powers already make it all come at a great cost… well a cost other then simply dying.

  4. Re: Help me flesh this out...

The best you can do is lure the public onto your side which is difficult because of the actions of other like you.

I can think of countless examples from various fictional sources as to what people might do in the situation. For some reason I’m stuck on what players might do in the scenario.

    - You have mutants that work for the government, accepting it as their calling

    - Mutants would work for good on their own, without the desire for winning over the public. Batman, or for some reason The Crow comes to mind.

    - Some of course would be bad, and with the public and church against them they have a good excuse.

    - Also some mutants would work for the church, a sub-organization or one denomination something along the lines of characters in the anime Hellsing.

    - A mutant bountyhunter, what better way of catching mutants.

Perhaps more later as I mull is over.

  5. Re: Captain Jack

Hope it doesn't upset anyone to learn that he's played by a Scotsman.

Fans of the good Captain might like to know that he'll be back in Series 3 of Doctor Who.

Very good to know, I liked the character very much. However, like Curufea I now need more information!

  6. Re: The Thing in Hero Terms

I got the impression that it was similar to an infection. One person had been chest deep into it, even though he was still alive, they torched him. The doctor also sabotaged the bases transportation because he calculated the rate of spread if it were to get out.

  7. Re: The Thing in Hero Terms

I caught some of this movie yesterday, great flick. Kurt Russell always went at it with flame throwers, some died easily, one decided to run outside while burning so it could be dynamited. I would probably give it vulnerability to fire. I would also throw in extra limbs and stretching, for the tentacles or extra legs. I would let them bleed, as that was one of the detection tests.

There are two more complex parts that I see: the infection, transforming variable creatures into "Thing" like creatures with relative ease. The other complex part can be covered by McCoy’s suggestion of Duplication – where limbs or the head of the victim can operate independently of the rest of the creature even if it has been burned to a crisp. For instance in one part the body was burned, but the head decided to wander off.

  8. Re: Summon help

My question is: Do I make another seperate character then put a summon power on Deadly Rose' date=' or can I just make the Fly Trap on Deadly Rose?[/quote']

One of the things I like about Summon, is you get to design what in essence is a whole new character. Stat it out, and give it a little description to flesh it out.

  9. Re: pulp hero over opinions?

I have to join the "Like it" chorus. I think it conveys the feel that the book is trying to create. To an outsider, reading the words Pulp HERO isn’t going to be as much a draw as seeing what Pulp HERO is.

  10. Re: Random "Stuff" generation tables

I really like the Tradesmen table, wide variety with everything I can think of and more.

You might want to tweak the numbers up a bit, perhaps a 1-1000 roll just to give a greater chance of hitting a common trade. You have a 3% chance of getting a Cook and a 1% chance of getting a Falconer or Physician. I would think that Cook should be far more common.

I’ve book marked your site, as one thing that I like even more then the Tradesmen and Merchants list are your lists of random names. Great work.

  11. Re: Building "Eye of Thoth" (Kult Conversion)

I’m impressed by the fact you are converting Kult. Great game, as long as you capture the proper feel you can’t go wrong.

No criticism of the power, I do agree with adding Concentration. Although, with having Extra Time, Gestures, and Incantations, adding Concentration may just be overkill for something that is already a given.

  12. Re: Science Fantasy Page Starting. Need Help.

It's just a few worlds' date=' and I need thoughts. Would you, if you were a player in this game, want more detail, or are the paragraphs and kickin' graphics enough? Enough detail on physical data? Green font too much? [/quote']

It’s enough, but also needs more detail. If I was playing, I would want to be able to click on a link of select planets to get more detail. However, I wouldn’t want to wade through a large amount of details for the other planets.

At first I liked the green, but it is harder on the eyes with a long read.

EDIT: I really like the graphics you selected for the planets.

  13. Re: Purely Positive Thread

I still love the system. I don’t have much time to dedicate to it this summer, but luckily the system doesn’t need a lot of follow up. Learn the rules, and things can then be done in short sessions, without the feeling of missing out on the latest twist.

With that said, I’m of course eagerly awaiting some of this years releases. I need extra ammo for the master plan… of total world domination.

  14. Re: I'll Never Play Pulp

I’m probably like the members of your group, I don’t want to play in a real world setting of the 1920’s and 30’s. However, as BigJackBrass pointed out, it can encroach into other areas. A sci-fi pulp game would be ideal for me. Or, why not have a stereotypical pulp game with a few ancient or futuristic twists? Use the book to it’s fullest, but throw a few items in that give it a futuristic or ancient feel.

  15. Re: Help with a name

You could always skip names that indicate the characters abilities.

    Sanctity

    The Enforcer

    The Lance

Ethereal or Aethereal to be cute

Or use a name that includes their home city The Houston Climber, or Pier Street Avenger. From there have the name evolve as others learn more about the character.

  16. Re: Space Cowboy WWII Hero!

Interesting, I contemplated last year a wild west type setting in the modern day. Take everything from today and add gunfights in the streets with cheap saloons, that sort of thing. This should be even easier to work.

One thing: if the hairstyle of the guy in the lower right with the yellowish-orange shirt is the hairstyle of the future, I don’t want to go there.

  17. Re: Something my FTF group liked

Humm...what other childhood book charaters can be twisted into odd heros?

Dick, Jain, and Spot (from Fun With Dick And Jain)? (Which reminds me, would it be odd if there was a superhero who spoke in simple, Dick And Jain style rime?) Cureous George? The Magic School Bus? The Cat In The Hat? I Am Sam (of Green Eggs And Ham fame)? The Monster At The End Of This Book?

I personally wouldn't be able to use Dick and Jane as heroes, the internet and a twisted mind have me viewing them in a different light. I would choose Alice in Wonderland characters, as it is my favorite book. Yamamura did a nice write up for an Alice type character recently in the "Supers with Pictures: Fun for all" thread which is here. I love the write up so just had to point it out.

I do like the idea of speaking style. I think it would be great mostly for a villain, as it could possibly get to be annoying after a bit. What characters wouldn’t want to take out a Sam-I-Am type bad guy.

  18. Re: Characters of "Substance"

Although this is perhaps not what you are looking for, I’ve always been interested, in a game sense, in what are often referred to as "Para-Elementals." Smoke, mud, magma, or really any substance that is a combination of two others. It would allow for stereotypical power sets that are broader based.

EDIT added "in a game sense" so you didn't think I was some weirdo that went out and played in the mud while smoking.

  19. Re: Goth Henchmen?

If it were me, I’d be tempted to have the powers involve drugs, or maybe I just met the wrong kind of Goths. There should also be something special with the dark clothes and odd accoutrements. Like: armored trench coat, secret compartment violin/guitar case, flame throwing oversized lighter etc.

  20. Re: why u all sux

Oh, well, I do that in real life, too... but only when I'm alone with my Teddy Ruxpin and reading "When You Hear The Chime, Turn The Page" books.

For example: "OMFG d00d!11! brer rabit kiks @$$!!111 ROFFFL!!11"

Teddy Ruxpin rox0rz! But I'm just into it for the pictures.

  21. Re: why u all sux

Of course' date=' I refuse to use any leetspeek unless I'm making fun of it, and then only outside the MMORPG environment. Such as on this board.[/quote']

But you’re missing out on the fun of using it in everyday normal life. When I shout “I R TEH W1N!†around people who don’t even have computers, they look at me in awe.

Ok, I’m a nerd, going back to some other nerdy pursuit.
