  1. Re: Lets talk about the untalkable: Levels

    Hmm...

    Well, my 2 cents.

I'm not too crazy about stating that every AD&D level advancement is equivalent (Ie. linear.) At certain levels, Magic spells become significantly more powerful, fighters gain extra attacks per round, etc....

A 5th level Magic User (Almost every player takes Fireball or Lightning Bolt as their first 3rd level magic spell...) packs a considerably more powerful punch than a 4th level Magic User. A 4th level Magic User, on the other hand, is only slightly more powerful than a 3rd level MU.

  2. Re: One Hero System Karate Cop

Um' date=' I hope you meant [i']Kiana[/i] Tom, because when I Googled Kianna Tom I got an awful lot of NSFW pix.

Then again, when I Googled Kiana Tom I got more than a few Playboy pix, so maybe my comment is irrelevant.

Looks like Google's Safe Search filter works pretty well. (Good to know. When it first came out, you could get some pretty raunchy stuff just by typing in pretty common words with the filter on medium level. At highest level, it blocks too much.)

Is Kianna the stage name of some porn actress? They often take famous names and add or drop a letter (which can lead to some very not-expected web search results.)

    Mom, definitely :D

  6. Re: Making colonization attractive?

I thought a lot of guys would jump at the chance to hook up with one of the green alien women :D

In all seriousness, if there were some sort of valuable work that my wife and I could do, we'd love to live on an offworld colony. :)

Otherwise, if space travel would (improbably) become cheap enough in my lifetime I'd love to take a vacation to Luna or Mars.

  7. Re: Is HERO an ideal or even an adequate game for those new to RPGs? Should it be?

A good GM and players can easily accomodate and mentor a newbie no matter what the system :D

Zorn, you're an excellent GM and player. You always keep in mind that it's called 'role-playing', not 'role-lawyering' or 'role-accountant.' You always remember Rule #1: It's supposed to be fun for everyone. (Ie. You don't pander to the guy who likes to argue some esoteric rule for the sake of arguing or the bully-brat who demands everything go the way he wants it.)

  8. Re: Why do we object to mechanics?

To get to the Big Idea of this thread...

The times that I've objected to mechanics are when they are abused by someone whose sole purpose in playing a game is to derive some sort of pathetic ego satisfaction by ruining everyone else's fun. (Ie. those bast**** who get their kicks by making others miserable.)

Otherwise, I'm good with using rules to the letter, modifying them, or dropping them altogether depending upon each unique campaign. (Every RPG 'campaign' is really a unique game, even between different campaigns of the same players using the same game system. Unless I've got a good reason to track END in Star Hero, I just don't bother. In Champions or "Fireball-Flinging" Fantasy Hero, you bet your sweet bippie I make sure people are keeping close track of it :))

  9. Disclosure: The reader should be aware that Jason is a good friend of mine. With that out of the way, on to the review!

It isn't easy to find a role-playing book would be a great read on its own if all the nuts and bolts and crunchy bits were removed. You Gotta Have Character is one of those rare books. With only minor modification the book could easily be used as a primer in any college level creative writing characterization course, as part of a class on ‘Notable People in History’ or as the basis for a really nifty TV series on a specialty cable channel.

Through exhaustive research, Jason Walters brings us a collection of some of the most eclectic and downright bizarre personalities in history. The book is written in an easy to read and comfortable voice. He manages to present these people in a relatively unbiased manner, although is not afraid to use a wonderful and subtle dry sense of humor when some of the things get really bizarre. As Ken Hite says in the introduction (Borrowing from Mark Twain, who borrowed it from Lord Byron, who probably borrowed it from some now-forgotten Greek dude, who was probably writing down an ancient saying) “Truth is Stranger Than Fiction.”

While You Gotta Have Character has the ability to stand outside of the role-playing genre, it is a great source of ideas for any campaign. Jason gives outstanding suggestions on how to adapt each character into multiple genres along with character profiles and write ups for each personality’s historical setting. By giving a concise and clear biography of how the cultures in which these people lived both created them and were changed by them, the GM is given the necessary tools to adapt them to their own setting.

The cover is an eye-catching, wonderfully done work of art that pulls you in and is 100% true to the books' content.

There are a few typos here and there, and an index to who-did-what(?) would have been nice but not necessary. Personally, I would have liked more bibliographical information and it would have been great if there could have been a customized art work or two for Jason's.... interesting :nonp: .... introduction.

All in all I give You Gotta Have Character a full and complete recommendation for anyone looking for a breath of fresh air into their game.

  10. Re: Starting up a new campaign -- Recruitment ideas?

What general advice do people have for recruiting new players?

    --Pete

Pull players into the game as quickly as possible. Always have some pregenerated characters ready for those not versed in the Hero System or even those who are fluent with it but didn't have the time or background to build a character for your particular setting. Tell them upfront that they can keep and use these pregenerated characters ongoing if they like them, or you can offer to stop the game a little early and generate characters.

  11. Re: Starting up a new campaign -- Recruitment ideas?
