  1. Re: And now a Math question - figuring out travel times...

Kraven, there are a few questions that need to be addressed before you can answer that.

    • What is the spacial relationship ratio between normal space and space in the tunnel?
    • What is the variable that is affecting the tunnel lengths as you get closer to your destination?
    • Is the spacial relationship changing as the tunnel lengths shorten?

  2. Re: Any new info on the X-Box 360 release date and if subscription is required for th

Seriously' date=' because it is going to cost as much as an X-Box 360 at this point for me to upgrade my computer to meet the game specs. And would love to know if the X-Box 360 version will require subscription payment per month or could benefit from the lifetime subscription if it does.[/quote']

I am sure that the 360 version will use the same account name/password system as the PC version does. In that case, you'll still be spending the same amount save that of your X-Box Live(XBL) payments though I've read that you will only need a free XBL Silver account to play.

  3. Re: Jupiter Impact!!?!

I'd be more concerned on how the heat from Jupiter would impact the asteroid belt

I wouldn't be too worried about an asteroid hitting Jupiter; with its massive gravity' date=' it eats asteroids for breakfast. Hell, that's the whole point of its existence; if we didn't have the gas giant in our outer system, Earth would be bombarded with meteors, asteroids, etc. on far more regular basis and the impact that took out the dinosaurs would look like a pebble compared to the rocks that could've otherwise hit us.[/quote']

That isn't what I said, the heat from Jupiter would start to create outgassing from any of the more icy asteroids and they'll start more impacts in the belt. I know Jupiter has been hit before, the Shoemaker impact is proof of that.

  4. Re: City of Heroes - Online Hero Game

It is interesting that a lot of what the dev team that used to work on CoH said was impossible, is being rolled out now. (Of course, the people that said it wouldn't work for CoH, many are working on CO...)

And it's stuff that is going to be in CO.

Nothing is impossible, just impossible within time constraints given.

I'm going to check out CO' date=' but I've been enjoying a lot of the changes to CoH since Jack left. The thing that may get me to play CO over CoH is the nemesis system. Though the more customizable powers may do it as well.[/quote']

The ability to choose powers across different types is gonna be sweet. Based on the videos I've seen. I am confident I will be able to bring in some characters with a reasonable confidence I can represent them properly. The Nemesis system is cool also, but I'm trying to get an idea who would be the nemesises for some of my characters.

I remembered that for my Captain Patriot character, I had designed a character called Chemax, who worked for the Livermore labs in California, trying to work on a solution for the smog in the air. A chemical accident forced Chemax to live in life support suit that actually filters outside air and pumps in the lethal air components he needs to live. I even came up with his two lab assistants name Exo and Endo, after exothermic and endothermic reactions. Exo was always wearing close to nothing to allow the heat her body was generating to escape while Endo was always forced to do what she could to heat up the air around her as she was always cold. Endo had this ability to steal heat from other heat sources, including people.

  5. Re: so... i'm in closed beta...

do you guys wanna hear about my impressions of the game (when i have some? still gotta collect the code from work tomorrow)? i'm not certain if there will be any restrictions on what i can say or not say' date=' but i'll be happy to post up as much info as i am allowed if you guys want. of course, if no one cares.... whats the point? :D[/quote']

Dude, as much as I would love new news on Champions Online, you really should check to see if you had to agree to an Non-Disclosure Agreement as a part of the Beta. Otherwise, you could lose your right to use the beta and worse case, get sued.

  6. Re: Human Power Generator

I'd go with Susceptibilty as Lucius notes.

As a comment though, if any joe blow can just slap a pair of jumper cables on her and use her to power up something, she's probably uninsulated. Which means you could also be looking at an electromagnetic field effect. Clocks speeding up / stopping or devices turning on / off in her vicinity. Just running a conductor near by her will generate a current. I'd use that as a Side Effect.

I never thought about using the EM field.

Check this out, I was thinking about this effect and how one of my character would look if written up with it. The character in question has 40 Stun, 40 END, & 7 personal REC:

    Biopowerplant:
Endurance Reserve (140 END, 10 REC) Reserve: (24 Active Points); Side Effects (Side Effect always occurs whenever some specific act is performed; When wired to provide electricity, she loses control of her END reserve and her personal recovery; -1/4)

Side Effect, listed in the order it would be most disadvantageous for the owner of the power:

Endurance Reserve (28 END, 17 REC) Reserve: , Side Effects (Side Effect does a predefined amount of damage; Loses 3 Stun for every 2 END used; +0), Usable By Other (+1/4)

    {This represents compulsory burning Stun to provide END for whoever has her strung up; this assumes she is at full stun when used, and the combined REC of her END Reserve + her Personal REC}

    plus

Endurance Reserve (40 END), Usable By Other (+1/4)

    {This represents you burning her Personal END}

    plus

Endurance Reserve (140 END), Usable By Other (+1/4)

    {This represents her END Reserve energy}

  7. Re: Human Power Generator

That's where I was confused by the original post.

Is the sfx actually electricity? (I thought it was just being used as an analogy)

If the sfx IS electricity, why not just give the character a low level NND Damage Shield plus a Susceptibility to 'being grounded' or used as a power source.

The problem with Susceptibility is that after you are KO'd you start to die and being dead makes you a bad power generator.

    The SFX is actually electricity.

  8. Re: Human Power Generator

    Previously on the topic:

This also raises the question of how to model generating normal electric power - for instance' date=' someone plugs a television (not a power bought with points) into the character. I'm thinking possibly a Change Environment? Or Transform: Nothing to Electric Current? Or would a Continuous Energy Blast with electricity SFX do it? In any case, I think you'd have to figure out how much power you generate per DC yourself.[/quote']

I can see Change Environment being used to power non-point cost devices easily. I think Transform is overkill, but a continuous EB or RKA? Hmmm.

I think the answer to that is based on the ability to channel and regulate that energy. That is why in the "Living in a Dangerous World" section, they often describe electricity in terms of its potential destructive potential.

Power generators have been written up in The Ultimate Vehicle.

Essentially, we break down an END Reserve to its two basic components:

    ENDurance and RECovery

REC is the ability of the peak amount of energy a power generator can create over the course of a turn. You need at least the same amount of END as REC in order to store the power created during the turn before the next post-segment 12 recovery.

Any END over the REC score simulates a battery to store excess energy until it is needed.

What is commonly done is to buy the END and REC of a power generator as a recoverable fuel charge, recovered when given a full tank of fuel. Also, the END of the power generator should also match the REC of the same generator at all times in the case of reducing the fuel consumption of the generator when fuel is low and you have to stretch out the supply.

  9. Re: Human Power Generator

Well' date=' the negative aspect is fairly easy to do with the Side Effect Limitation.[/quote']

I was just trying to get an idea on how much it would be worth? There was debate on it before.

  10. Re: Human Power Generator

I'm a little confused as to what the intended positive effect of this ability is supposed to be.

Normally, a Power that can draw from an Endurance Reserve AND Personal END needs to have a (+1/4) Advantage to do so. With that in mind a UBO END Reserve wouldn't do anything for most targets by itself. A Naked UBO Advantage would be necessary as well. And it seems to me that if a Naked UBO Advantage is necessary it would be simplier to just make Reduced END be the Advantage that is being granted. It would make for a whole lot less bookkeeping.

I'm trying to develop this as a negative thing, as she can be compelled to give up her electrical power.

Let me set up a possible situation:

Generica, the evil generic supervillianess, has a "Death Ray" that needs powering, but plugging the "Death Ray" into the grid would alert the authorities when she creates a blackout.

"Hmmm, how could I power my 'Death Ray'? Ah yes, that heroine, Electrica, she'll do nicely."
    :snicker:

Yes, I know that she could build a electricity transfer gadget and drain Electrica's END, but the point I was trying to reach is that I'm looking for a limitation for her END Reserve to show the relative ease by which she can be used in that manner by anyone, even Jimbob with a pair of jumper cables.

  11. A character with an END Reserve that can be used externally as easily as someone with a PS: Electrician skill wiring her up. When wired in that way and connected to something that will draw power, she feels non-lethal pain and the person in question gets full control of the reserve.

It has been suggested that disadvantages can be used or an appropriate side effect, but I want to see suggestions from everyone to get a general consensus. I personally am leaning toward a limitation, but I'd appreciate a breakdown on how you get your numbers for whatever option you choose.

    Thanks in advance,

    Archie

  12. Someone had to bring up Density Increase and having enough density to be effectively the same as Neutronium during the Hero Chat last night, so I went ahead and calculated the gravitational pull of a neutronium man.

    Human: 80 kg.

    Neutronium: 4 * 10 ^ 17 kg/m^3

The neutronium man, N-Man for short, with a volume of 0.08 cubic meters, would have a mass of 8e+15 kg

Now, with the help of Google (put "((Gravitational constant) * (8*10^15 kg))/((.001 km)^2)" into Google and you'll see), the gravity at the surface of N-man, assuming N-Man's 'surface' is 1 meter from the center, is 533,840 meters per second per second. For comparison, Earth's gravity is 9.80665 meters per second per second.

Now, according to one of Newton's Laws, the effect of gravity is inversely proportional to the square of the distance, so at 2 meters away is 133460 meters per second per second.

Changing the number to hexes we get 66730 hexes per second per second.

Now, I went ahead and plugged the numbers into a Google Docs spreadsheet which I'd love for people to read and comment on.

Now at 165 hexes away, N-Man's gravity would finally be at less than .5 g which I think is enough to say an average person can resist easily with their casual STR.

    What do you think people?

  13. Re: Generic SF Universe Project

Just keep in mind the primary rule of the Hero system: focus on effects' date=' not [b']causes[/b].

In other words, try writing up each of the FTL propulsion systems in the Hero system, in order to get a firm grasp on their differences. The real differences, not just the bafflegab explanations of how they work.

But by understanding the way the universe works, we can bring the world to life. In the end, how you build it isn't as important as being able immerse yourself in the game environment.

  14. Re: Generic SF Universe Project

If it helps' date=' I've already written an FTL paradigm. Mostly because I couldn't decide which method of FTL to use for my Newton's First Law campaign, so I included all of them.

    multiverse.gif

It looks like all the principles of FTL travel you have essentially work by tunneling; piercing the dimensional boundaries between Normal Space and the different layers of Hyperspace.

    This is what I'm proposing:

In the beginning, Low Energy Hyperspace(LEHS) was used to travel to the various systems out there and was the only way to get to different systems until engineering principles allow the creation a huge hyperspace engines that enabled High Energy Hyperspace(HEHS) to be used, though expensive to make.

These hyperjump gates, or just jump gates for short, facilitated trade between different systems but also made the companies that created these gates a lot of money. The fee collected for using the jump gates are split between the owners of both endpoints of the gate. Jump Gates also act as beacons to by which the other jump gates in the network can lock onto to make the quantum tunnel between them. Ships in the quantum tunnel can use the hyperspace beacons to determine time to destination. The jump gates also act as communication links between different systems in the network though because of the expense of maintaining the jump gates, FTL communication, while extremely fast, is also expensive.

Ships using LEHS and HEHS cannot change their courses in midflight unless they pay a similar expenditure of energy used to get into hyperspace to pop out of hyperspace. While LEHS craft can do that, ships in HEHS cannot do that unless they have the large engines to make that trip in the first place.

Now, as hyperspace engines got more advanced, they found they could instead of piercing the hyperspace boundary, they could bend or warp space to enter into that same quantum energy state. This gave the benefit of being able to exit that quantum energy state at any time. It also allows the ability to change direction. FTL maneuvering now becomes an option.

As Warp Drive technology becomes more advanced, the principles of warping space combined with quantum tunneling. In other words, wormholes.

Wormhole technology uses principles of gravitation to pinch the space between two points closer so a quantum tunnel can be made to pierce both points in space simultaneously, but this can only happen between locations where space is weakest or, for faster travel, around areas of heavy gravitational forces, such as supergiants or singularities. For the absolutely fastest travel being between two singularities and the most dangerous.

  15. Re: Generic SF Universe Project

I'm kind of fond of the idea of humanity being the first modern species in space' date=' (with a bunch of Precursors who all died out a few million years ago. We spread out, discover less advanced species. They learn from us. Our interstellar civilization collapses creating a Long Night, and the aliens who have learned from us become our rivals as we try to climb back up again.[/quote']

So, we ended up trading and stuff with these more primitive races then as we expand, but because we expanded too quickly, we end up fighting among ourselves, then these other races, because we treated them like dirt because of humanity's haughty nature, they give humans a hard time.

  16. Re: Generic SF Universe Project

I think one of the first things you need to decide about Earth, assuming you even want to keep Earth in it, is whether Earth is unified or separate nations. That will impact how they expand into the galaxy.

  17. Re: Narf's Supers Stuff

    Entirely book-legal, unlimited power...

30 Succor 2d6 (standard effect: 6 points), Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2), Persistent (+1/2), Continuous (+1), [four powers] simultaneously (STR, DEX, CON, BODY; +1), Delayed Return Rate (points return at the rate of 5 per Month; +2) (60 Active Points); Always On (-1/2), Self Only (-1/2)

Good luck finding a GM who'll allow it! :D

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but you made a small mistake and you are also setting yourself up for a big fall.

    1. Succor does not use the Delay Return Rate advantage as you placed on your power. The character points stay on the character for as long as you pay the endurance, which is not an issue, since you have it at 0 END Cost, which brings me to...
    2. Succor, when purchased with 0 END Cost, as you did in your example, must have a common means of turning it off.

    Good Luck with that.
