  1. Re: Why Watched?

I am just THAT good a necromancer...if a little rusty on my Disads rules. Soc Lim does have a roll attached to determine how often it comes up....

Yeah...didn't even notice the date on the thread. Just saw it in my related threads thing on the bottom and...commented.

I get the distinct feeling that those related threads will be the cause of much necromantic energies entering the forums, as even I myself have clicked on them and thought to reply... only to find out someone else had already recroed it XD

Edit: Oh yes, to keep on topic (I'm so bad at that) I generally agree that it's just people gathering info that could cause you troubles in the future, or that somehow the fact that THESE people are watching you could bring attention from someone else.

  2. Re: I want to construct, with as little fuss and bother as possible...

Personally, I'd just go the way the Fantasy Hero book did and say a magic using character has XX amount of points to buy spells with. Also, those spells would run on END (be it personal END or some sort of reserve). This has advantages in that it makes it easy to deal with spells (once you get them all written out), and it's self balancing in that you buy them all at cost (you can also give assigned experience for buying spells).

That's how I'd do D&D magic (arcane as well as divine). I never really was that found of study, cast & forget, go to bed then study to put a new spell in the slot you just got back by sleeping... but that's just me I guess.

*sigh* I wasn't going to say anything, but my brain won't leave me alone. Technically you haven't regained the spell you cast just because you've slept. What sleeping does is clear your head in preparation of studying the spells you will prepare for the day. Even if you want to cast the exact same spells today as yesterday, you still have to take the time to study them, again. Unless of course you didn't cast the spell yesterday, then you're fine (or you can change it out if you want). Even the way that KS treats this style of Fire and Forget magic works like that. You can't rearrange your VPP until you've slept and studied.

  3. Re: Game Master Lament

My own anecdote: In a Vampire: The Masquerade game I ran I asked the players to write up a short backstory for their characters. Two said no, not gonna happen, players should never need to input everything the GM should be able to come up with it during play for them (almost a direct quote). Two of them gave me half to one page background. Well, the two I had backgrounds for ended up becoming the major characters because i actually had something to work with, especially with my style I used for those games of letting the players run around doing things, and then having things happen.

Sadly the campaign was short lived because scheduling became a nightmare. Just saying that while the "homework" wasn't required, it did end up having a major impact, but I didn't "require" it. Oh yeah, I also said they'd get a couple bonus xp for doing the background, which still didn't sway the two no workers.

  4. Re: THE ULTIMATE BASE Now Available In PDF In The Online Store

Will the book/pdf bundle be on hold until the books arrive in warehouse? There's probably a lot of people that would buy the bundle and wait for the physical book.

I'm another person that would so totally buy the bundle even if I had to wait a while for the books (I did it with 6th ed after all). I suppose tho that we have to wait til you'd be able to ship it so that you don't peev off distributors or something tho. Sigh, guess I'll just have to wait til the bundle is up!

    ::edit::

Also I'm planning on only buying bundles unless I'm so strapped for cash but still need a book, so I'd definitely buy bundles as a book pre-order in the future too!

  5. Re: Weight of equipment

if you've got fantasy HERO I'm fairly certain that there's weights for all kinds of stuff and rules for figuring out larger or smaller versions of weapon and armor weights. I remember the armor weights are based on how much defense the armor grants tho, not the material and make of the armor. It's also possibly it's somewhere in 6th Ed. and I haven't seen it cause I'm still figuring out 6th.

  6. Re: Castle Base and Followers

That's true, unless this base is on a PC's character sheet or you want them to be able to buy something like this, it doesn't really need to be perfectly statted up like that. You can just say "the castle is staffed" and POOF it is staffed! ^_^

  7. Re: Player Control of Followers

To me it seems the best way might be to give the mage some minor combat abilities, and have the warrior be the follower that typically just defends the mage and does the other manual labor for him. Plus the mage can still give combat orders to the warrior, it's just that everyone nearby can also hear the orders (unless he has a mind link spell with the warrior).

  8. Re: Malazan Hero

Ok, so I checked anyway -_-

Anyways, just remembered something about hood's realm... it's you can't pass through his GATE and still live, afterall the trygalle (spelling) use hood's realm quite often. D'oh!

I had actually forgotten that Callot used Mockra, actually. The first book is a little wonky tho since it was written a long time before the others (both '88 and '92 are sticking in my head for some reason), but I would have to agree with letting it unleash unless/until mr. erickson gives us a more in depth understanding of mockra.

Anyways, back to TtH, good stuff happening!

  9. Re: Malazan Hero

I think you really got the point here, malazan magic is raw and seldom used for fine effects. And yes, if it goes wrong, it does so horribly.

We should try to make a list of the warrens and what their special effects and most used aspects are.

In my current reread of Memories of Ice I found a warren that was never mentioned before or after: Aral Gamelon, a demonic warren. The Korvalahrai and the Galayn, the favorite demons in the empire, are both from this warren.

I'm not sure all mages should have to be able to enter their warren, after all, you might not know how (and it doesn't seems like it's necessarily easy), particularly if you're using Hood's warren.... Also, not all warrens would unleash in a RKA in my opinion, Mockra and Denul come immediately to mind.

Anyways, I'm almost halfway done with Toll the Hounds, so I probably won't be back here til I'm done with that... just to be safe on spoilerage

Can't wait to see what you come up with tho!

  10. Re: World of HEROCraft?

The other problem is that you can't have realistic distances because it'd take forever to get anywhere, so you have to keep in mind while playing an MMO that what you see is only a representation of a lot more than what you see. In game the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalmidor are only around 6-7km from top to bottom, obviously that's not realistic for land masses known as continents with fully fledged ecosystems with the variety (and population) that exists in WoW, it's just a stand in. Same thing with time, as long as you never go back to old areas time moves forward and thus so does the plot, but if you pay too close attention in a major city, or even go back to a starter area, then you're in a time loop you just have to ignore.

I play MMOs, specifically WoW, but I highly prefer PnP RPGs especially for this reason.

  11. Re: Newbie questions on Single Use Items

    Welcome! Have some REP!!!

For your grenade example, if someone bought a grenade with 1 charge, they would not be out of the CP spent on the grenade unless they upped the charge penalty to "does not recover". Thus they way you can justify this might be that he's a military guy whom gets a certain amount of supplies and gets restocked each day, or some such. So he gets 1 grenade per day, but his superiors only want him to have 1, so if he doesn't use his grenade he won't get a second the next day, only keep the 1 he already has.

Thus we have reasoning from effect!

And yes, I realize that things tend to not come out of my head in a way that other people will understand, so just let me know if that doesn't make sense and I'll try to redo it. :help:

  12. Re: What is Your Inner Character?

That's actually closer to my style than the one I got. It's the character I played in Neverwinter Nights 1. He had a rather unlikely fighting style which involved dual-wielding a morningstar and scimitar.

So what would everyone have chosen as their character? I.E. what would you have expected to get?

Well, i would ahve expected something neutral good and dwarfy, possibly sorcerer!
