  1. Re: Knockback "realistic"?

In the vein of other ways of doing knockback (and a note, I've not checked out the other thread so I dunno if this was mentioned), I'll take a hit from Exalted (this is where I've seen it done this way) and say that instead of taking damage based off of how far you've been thrown back, it's instead based on how far you should have been thrown back but wasn't due to the obstacle, assuming I have knockback do damage at all outside of landing on spiky things!

example: get a knockback of 10", but a solid wall of some sort is 3" behind you, instead of taking damage as for travelling 3", you'd take damage for 7" because the energy that would have carried you that far doesn't break through the wall, thus you get the ouchies.

  2. Re: Language Games and Fantasy Languages

Another "english twist" is what I learned as being called "dog talk" (dunno why...). Basically, before any vowel you put ib (eye-bh). Dibo yibou ibundiberstiband hibow tibo ribead thibis? Great fun, and hella hard to understand until you get the hang of it (well, for me anyway, not for my sister whom seems to be a sponge for language... I'm so jealous).

That actually not a bad idea tho if you can keep track of it all, I might try that if given the chance!

  3. Re: Is combat in HERO strategic?

I'm a native english speaker, and sometimes even I don't get english. I won't rehash since it's be handled, but I just want to say if you think this is weird, look at the word cleave. It has two definitions (that I'm aware of) and they are the exact opposites of each other

For pronuncation, look at -ough. 'nuff said.

Anyways, too keep on topic, hero I would say has some very good tactical elements to it, so if that's what you want out of a game, definitely stick with it. :)

  4. Re: Open Ended, etc.

I think I know where the disconnect is with the dex, dex has nothing to do with the damage in so far as it let's you get the hit in. You could just as easily do the to hit roll then roll the 3d6 to determine damage, he's just decided to do it as one roll. So you could have 10,000 OCV while your opponent has 2 DCV, roll a 4, and only do 25% of your attacks damage potential. The only way to get up to those 199% damage potentials is if you roll 6-6-6 and continuously reroll 6 on those dice up until you hit 27, which is all accounted for BEFORE you add in OCV.

It's an interesting system, and I hope I've both cleared it up for people who misunderstood AND not misunderstood it myself that thus confused people all the more! :celebrate

  5. Re: Converting Palladium to HERO

Well I sure wouldn't mind it if someone else took over for settings, because as you said, they are really fun settings, but the books are too filled with bloat. HERO taking over some of them would be spiffy, even tho I know THAT will never happen, but it's fun to dream about!

  6. Re: Converting Palladium to HERO

Wow, we sure went off topic :straight:

Anyways, I say as other do don't do straight up conversions. Instead, look at generally what the PCC's and RCC's do, then do a general conversion into package deals, kinda like what killer shrike's done with the dnd classes. Don't say this stat converts into this much of this stat, do "well, it's based offensively, so I'll give it some offense". Gosh is that bland and vague, but I'm not sure how else to put it.

And honestly, only convert what you'll need unless you have fun converting and/or want it to be a resource for other people.

So yeah, summed up, make some package deals that get the flavor of the classes, especially since the classes from palladium aren't exactly balanced anyway, if I recall correctly, so you'll actually end up balancing them by doing this.

Maybe you're just goofing around here' date=' Thia. And if that's the case, the jokes on me. But just in case you're not, you're probably wondering what the heck that expression means. The actual phrase is "six in one hand, half-dozen in the other." Which I'm sure makes its meaning a lot clearer. Either way, no offense intended.[/quote']

I thought it was just "Six of one, half a dozen of the other", which also works as "same difference" me thinks :D

  8. Re: Howdy I know nothing about Hero System and was wondering something

    Welcome!

Now, I'm gonna do something that no one's done yet cause they probably don't want to overwhelm you, so I'll include a proviso...

IF you end up liking what you see in Sidekick (yes, get that, uber book), then you most certainly should buy HERO Designer. I'd say do so even before the (nearly) 600 page monster just because it really well help you learn the system. It's character creation software that does alot of the hard stuff for you. The only problem would be that the notes in HD reference the big book, but that's only a minor hurdle until you take the thick plunge.
