  1. Re: Musings on Random Musings Heh. I remember my first physics experiment, about age 4. I had a theory that electricity was a fluid, and it came out of one hole in the socket, went through whatever appliance was plugged in, then went back in the other hole. So to see which hole it came out of, I stuck a paper clip into the right-hand slot of the socket. I recall feeling very peculiar, and my parents staring at me like I was an alien. The memory ends there.
  2. Re: The Last Word Just about all my number associations are with 4-digit numbers. There's a few with 5- or 6-digit numbers as well, but there are a lot fewer such associations than in the 4000 to 8800 range.
  3. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER Heh. I learned that I'm off the hook, sort of, for Valentine's Day evening this year. Turns out that is the main performance of the school play in which my daughter is a chorus member. Presents, of course, are still needed, but those are easier to come by later. Dinner & entertainment out take more foresight.
  4. Re: The cranky thread Yeah, I know. Bots are forever.
  5. Re: The cranky thread Well, I wonder which of my daughter's schoolmates' parents has the compromised machine at home? This morning I started getting numbers of email bounce messages from places all over the world, generally a sign that my address has been harvested by some 'bot somewhere and is being used as spoof fodder. The only alteration in email "habits" I've had of late is getting spam intended for the 'rents of the kids in the school play. That's the 2nd-most-likely sort of place where a recipient is likely to have a compromised machine; the most likely being a machine habitually used by a retiree.
  6. Re: The Last Word 3 * 37 less than 666, where it always is.
  7. Re: The Last Word It has the right number of digits to be a telephone number in the US. But I ain't trying it.
  8. Re: The Last Word BTW, what's the origin of the "478-25-13908" tag now on this thread?
  9. Re: The Last Word General thread-dom.
  10. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER All this reminds me I need to listen to the Pink Floyd disk again.
  11. Re: The Last Word Learning Annoyance
  12. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER Dunno. Some swine have very profound insights.
  13. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER Chili came out OK, though I need to remember that even a little beef in it helps the flavor a bunch. The pork-only stuff lacks a bit of depth.
  14. Re: The Last Word Lessee ... at 10822, L. Marcus is quite close to He I 10830A, whose lower state is the lowest triplet level of neutral helium. That's interesting for S stars which don't show technetium, and is probably a further sign that those are binaries.
  15. Re: The Last Word Eh, I'd just replace it with a different, more obnoxious one.
  16. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER But don't put green guacamole in it. It'll get all furry.
  17. Re: NGD Scenes from a Hat Pat Paulsen's beyond-the-grave Presidential campaign ad.
  18. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER On Super Bowl Sunday, I am making chili and probably going to ignore the football game.
  19. Re: The Last Word There is information even in noise. Take a power spectrum of it sometime.
  20. Re: The Last Word Since when did level of others' interest stop a college professor from talking about anything?
  21. Re: Complicate the Person Above Narratio stole all the listed tourist sites in Myanmar and moved them Schleswig-Holstein. The monks were wet, cold, and pissed.
  22. Re: The Last Word Boy, you'd think you weren't interested or something.
  23. Re: The Last Word Well, that's possible, but I've only seen it happen once. And if it happens, then yowza! A fresh start at drive-by comments!
  24. Re: The Last Word Hmm, it's a ratcheted random walk. The numbers are strictly increasing, but the steps are random in size.
