  1. UncleVlad,

    Thanks for the response.

Yeah, my math is off.  I haven't determined how I want to do the rounding, since the error is the "in favor" rule.

I believe this helps.  My group does have Hero Designer, but it's a bit cumbersome for a few of us.  The GM also wanted a different way of looking at it.  Thankfully, I don't have a lot of hair to pull out 😉

    Thanks,

    Todd

  2. So, as an example using the image from the OP:

[Power Name]: Blast 1d6, Area of Effect (Radius 17-32m; +1, Explosion; -½) (5 Active Points); Focus (Inobvious, Inaccessible (IIF); -¼, Arrangement; -¼, Fragile; -¼, Difficult to obtain new Focus; -¼). Total Cost: 4 points.

I have not built in Adders at this point.

I did find the Writer's Guidelines Version 1.1 April 2003 online, but it really didn't give suggestions for formatting of powers.  Not all the power examples utilize more than one of a type (like Focus).  I'm just trying to make it so that any combination could be used, whether or not it is legal around the table.

    Again, any help is appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Todd

  3. Hello,

I'm in the early process of attempting to make a Power Creation tool for a friend.  We'll see how it goes....

My question is, when creating a Power Stat Block, how much would be needed for display?

I attached an image of where I'm at with the tool.  Still need to do Adders as well.

If anyone can point me to a document or reference, I would appreciate the help!

    Thanks

    Todd

  4. I'm playing in a game that takes our real life selves (thankfully 15 years ago :)) and converting them to mutants. My character concept is a brick/gadgeteer combo called "The Scoutmaster".

One of the issues that I'm running into is how to have my weapon and armor easily accessible. I'm using a "Merit Badge" theme for activating things. For example, I use the "First Aid Merit Badge" to deliver healing nanites to the harmed character.

Basically, it's a 1.5 in patch that will transform to the actual Power. Here are the two that I want to convert to this concept.

Armored Costume: Resistant Protection (12 PD/12 ED) (36 Active Points); OIF (-1/2)

The Arrow of Light: Multipower, 60-point reserve, (60 Active Points); all slots OAF (-1), Restrainable (-1/2)]

I'm guessing it would be some kind of Transform power and some kind of Extra Time.

    Any thoughts would be helpful!

    Thanks!

  5. Re: Double The Hero Excitement!

Some kind of deal with Green Ronin to make dual-statted products (or something like that) might make some sense and might draw additional people to the Hero web site; however, such a thing could backfire. For example, if they did dual-stat products, I could see fans of both systems complaining about the pages and other resources being wasted on stats for the other system. Now, maybe there could be a way to make it work, but I'm not sure. I'm also not sure that all the necessary conversion work would increase sales enough for it to be worthwhile to either company.

It could be a single product similar to "Reality Storm" that included conversion information but I'm not sure that would qualify as a big, big announcement. And given the delays that occureed due to working with another company and the resulting poor sales of "Reality Storm", I'm not sure how quick Hero would be to jump into that pool again

Both valid points, but I think that Green Ronin has learned their lesson with the OGL. With the Freeport Campaign, they're producing a statless book that allows any system to use the campaign setting. Addtional books are set up to flesh out the setting in the campaign of choice (kind of like the Traveller Hero books).

I think that GR could do the same thing for their Supers setting. Hero can put out stats for GR's characters, and GR can do the same for Hero. Although, I think GR would come out the "winner" because they don't have as many settings/genres as Hero.

I'm also a fan of Web Enhancements. Put out a book and give the Dual Stats out online. Your book contains the rule system of choice (DoJ puts out Hero, GR puts out M&M) and the other stats and conversions are online. Saves on page count going to the conversions and leaves more room for the adventure.

    Just my thoughts.

  6. Re: Double The Hero Excitement!

GoO? Guardians of the Order? What have they to do w/ M&M?

GoO has nothing to do with M&M. Just expanding the speculation.

However, Green Ronin (M&M) is still in business and I've heard podcasts that DoJ and GR are "good friends" when talking about competition between the companies.

  7. Re: Double The Hero Excitement!

something i thought about in the shower just now...

Mutants and Masterminds will not be going to 4th Ed (they can't, Wizard's new OGL states that the main rules cannot be altered, meaning everyone needs at least 3 books from WotC to run their games). since M&M is a major revision of the d20 system, maybe they are looking for a new home. maybe that home would be with HERO? (instead of squabling over the small, leftover hunks of the Supers RPG market, they could team up to dominate the industry, ala DnD for Fantasy).

    just a thought... :)

Like a Hero and Silver Age Sentinals thing? M&M and H!

  8. Re: Double The Hero Excitement!

Wasn't she "horrified" to learn that an RPG meant other people would be creating stories with her characters?

Doesn't really matter anyway. The series is done. Nothing more to get people hopped up on.

You could say the same about Firefly, but it was "killed" in it's prime instead of having an ending like Potter.

  9. Re: Double The Hero Excitement!

Nope' date=' won't be Harry Potter Hero. Rowling pretty much wants nothing to do with RPGs. Steve even talked about this in this week's chat.[/quote']

I pretty much knew that Rowling wasn't stepping up. The chat is on a bad night for me, so I missed that conversation. However, it's fun to speculate! A lot more civil than the 4e D&D threads out there.

Hey, sed is very useful UNIX utility while FRED is a lousy text editior on Honeywell's GCS-8 OS (if I remember correctly). :D What?!?

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around Linux!

OGL D&D idea??? I must have missed that one.

Here. But not the 6e thing. Just that 4e D&D sounds a lot like Hero.

Conspiracy Hero. I suspect the H only applies to one of the announcements. Remember there are two. But Conspiracy Hero sounds like just another normal Hero product -- not something that would be considered a major announcement.

That's the conspiracy! One to inform of the conspiracy, one to disprove it ;)

Big Surprise Announcement from Hero Games

Monday, 10:00 AM in Room 156

    Presenter(s):
    Darren Watts, Steve Long

    Type:
    Seminar

The Heroes unveil the latest super-secret special product from Hero Games. Come and see as they
    strip the cloak of secrecy
    from this long-simmering project.

Harry Potter Hero? Just think of the influx of gamers. PS238, Sidekick, Character Creation Handbook...

Hopefully not 6 edition. Sed? Come one, that sucks compared to FRED!

I like the "OGL D&D" idea. Would fit well with a FH reprint.

Conspiracy Hero (Trust No One)? There is no H...

  11. Re: Players wish to emulate dnd's sense motive.

I dont believe this would do well for as a power for the average bloke. Also' date=' I agree with others above that every man should have it, as well as bluff, which brings me to the next point. How do you bluff?[/quote']

I think Bluff is the same monster as Sense Motive. You can do a lot of things with the D&D Bluff. Maybe a Multipower to explain them away.

  12. Re: My Cool Color Hudson City Map

Heck, I'd like to see it as a Desktop Wallpaper.

I took the TA and blew it up by 200% in Paint and saved it as a PDF. No distortion and it's about 2.25 x 2.25 pages landscape. Sure, you have to cut it out, but it looks great in black and white on my wall.

    Cheap, but effective!

  13. Re: The Price of an Inn?

    Basic Tavern: 900gp (20 people)

    Basic Storage: 250gp (2,000' cubed)

Basic Bedroom Suite: 800gp (Queen size straw bed, 2 chest of drawers)

Basic Kitchen: 2000gp (with pantry, serves 15 people)

Stronghold Builder's Guidebook by Wizards of the Coast

Based on the above, you're talking 11,150 gp. Honestly, I haven't read the book, but this should be a rough estimate. I read in Dragon magazine that a 2x4 cost about 2cp.

Granted, it will take 279 days at 2gp per person at capacity to pay the building off. There are other options in the book that can be used to reduce the cost (skills, magic, etc). Also, besides what is listed, you'll need to stock the place.

    Hope this helps

  14. Re: FH Gripes

Point 1. That's Hero System for you. It's not like any other system (except maybe GURPS). You have many more options, all of which are abstract. If you convert from one system to Hero, you need to establish a link. Therefore, more conversion. I read an email that was forwarded to me. It said, don't convert. Work with what you have. Heck, make the Player's convert if you're going to do it. They can wrack their brains on the mechanics while you work on the game.

Point 2. And why not? No game system is perfect. Also, WotC is putting out much better game material that is not specific on their game. Frostburn, Dungeoncraft, Fantastic Locations, and even the Campaign Settings are pretty generic.

Point 3a. Not everything is meant for every level. Make it more powerful, less powerful, or just use it. Also, not everything should be used against the PCs. Encounters should be searched out by fools or by heroes.

Point 3b. Yeah, well, change it. Game resources are just that: resources for games. If you don't like something, change it. If you don't like it to change it, don't use it. Sure, you spent the money, but you also have it as a resource. Campaign Settings have a flavor for everyone. Middle Earth is different from Forgotten Realms. Star Wars is different from Traveller. Dark Matter is different from Dark Champions. Why? Because not everyone likes everything. If we did, then we wouldn't have other game systems.

Point 4. That's what all game systems do. Experience is the bane of any game. As your PC "grows up", he gets more powerful. As he becomes more powerful, he fights more powerful enemies.

D&D allows for additional abilities, skills, feats, spells, or what have you as time goes on. GURPS is a practical mirror of Hero. Even d6 Star Wars has the same issues.

How do you fix it? Well, what do you do when they say that they want to take such and such power/skill? Do you require time for them to learn the process? Do you have them seek out a "master" to improve? You can only become so proficient with a Karate book. Eventually, you will need to dedicate more time, more resources, more determination to become wat you want to be. "Special Effects" are more than the way your EB works.

Point 5. Can't help you on that one. The only thing I can suggest is to limit the Reduced Endurance options. Pay close attention to Endurance Reserves. Maybe even have the Reserve tied to the PC so that it costs a little when using it.

Point 6. That's the way it's supposed to be.

House rules must be run by the players. Plain and simple. If they don't like it, they will gripe. Why? Because it's not in a book. A book is a crutch. It's the manual that tells you how things work. Without order, there is chaos.

Think out the house rule process throughly and write them down. Make sure you document the reason for the change and how it should be adjudicated. Don't come up with a House Rule because you don't like something, it makes the Player's feel like they're having their powers taken away from them. If this happens, make sure that they see your point of view and come up with a resonable solution. Communicate with the players to ensure that they're OK with it.

Yes, this may sound deconstructive. I don't mean it to be. I don't know how long you've been playing your game, nor how your experience is handed out.

If it's a long term game (years, months, what be it), then it may just be growing pains. If it's something in the short term, you may want to re-evaluate your starting points or even how you distribute character points. You may want to hand out character points, at higher levels, further apart. This goes along with the "leveling" of D&D. As you advance, you get less experience for easier challenges. You also take longer to level. Hand out the Character Points after a major "mini boss" encounter or after the a key moment in the game. While this will extend the longevity of the game, it will still run upon your proverbial "wall".

    Hope this helps.
