  1. Re: The cranky thread

I'm not feeling too bad this morning' date=' but on my way to the restroom one of my co-workers was in her office chant-hissing "Sh*t. Sh*t. Sh*t. Sh*t. ...." I didn't stop to ask.[/quote']

Well, you were on the way to the bathroom. Maybe she was just trying to motivate you? Y'know, show her support? :D

  2. Re: Idle thinkings on BattleTech

Actually, the whole ordeal over the Btech books didn't shut FASA down... they decided to close their doors due to a slumped market that wasn't making them any money. The problem was due to a confusion over who owned the rights to the images of said mecha, and who had the right to sell that license. Harmony Gold, FASA, and at least one other party were all involved; FASA wasn't sued, per se, but they were given a cease and desist regarding use of those images (as I understand it), though they were pretty much moving towards compliance before that point.

As mentioned above, TRO: Project Phoenix pretty much brings all those designs back, and most of them are fairly recognizeable. I prefer my copy of TRO:3025 (orginally) due to the timeline (and my first mecha love- the BLR-1G Battlemaster), but the whole new Jihad era piqued my interest, so TRO:PP is also in my collection. :)

  3. Re: Best way to model a booming voice?

I just want to give everyone else a bonus to hear me speak. The special effect is that my voice is so loud, it is easier to hear than normal. It's for a weather control character who wants to be able to have a loud, booming voice that can be heard over the howling winds he creates.

Hmm... some play on Ventriloquism, Area Effect?

  4. Hiya-

In thinking about certain instances where characters develop new/more powerful abilities as they get injured (numerous video game bosses, Heroclix figures, etc.), what do you think would be the appropriate modifier(s) to give those particular abilties?

"Only when at 1/2 BODY, (-1/4)", for example?

Any other suggestions (aside from ensuring that the ability isn't abused- that is, they don't go get blasted just so that they can unleash the UltraMegaWhammyBlast of DOOOOM)?

  5. Hiya-

I don't have the book in front of me, so forgive me if this is answered there: how would you build an EB that, for example, can be used as a defense against another EB? As in, you could abort to it to portray one of those instances where two opponents are trying to overpower one another's blast to blast the other?

Or would you just allow for something like this with any character with an appropriate power?

  6. Re: "The bigger Bulk get, the dumber Bulk get!!!"

To follow the same example, but make it more efficient, buy the first 40pts of growth normally, and only put the last part in the MP with the INT. Like, 40pts growth. 10pt MP with m +10pts growth and m +10pts INT. Total cost 54 vs 60 if all bought outright.

That makes sense... what I'm looking for is to buy his main INT down a few points, so that if he were (for whatever reason) to grow to his absolute max, his INT would be that of just above savage.

Think Maul, of the WildCATs comic.

  7. Re: "The bigger Bulk get, the dumber Bulk get!!!"

Could also do a two-slot multipower with "m" slots, one growth, one INT, so the more you grow, the less you have available for INT. (again, assuming INT higher than normal). Say, 50 pt MP, one slot m 50pts of Growth, another slot m +10 Int. Going to 40 in growth is no problem, but to get that extra last burst, you're losing the 10 INT.

You know, I really like this particular idea. Thanks!

  8. Re: Power Build: "Portal" power

You could also' date=' for the sake of simplicity, make it a Physical EB with Indirect[/quote']

That's true, but then I wouldn't be able to reflect being able to pull something back through the portal.

Although... that DOES give me another visualization, that of several portals opening up around a group of thugs. On the character's end (tentatively named "Reach"), he punches into a single portal- his fist ends up exiting out of these portals simultaneously. An Area Attack, Indirect, with Selective Targeting maybe? Would that even work?

  9. So, I've got a character who's power is focused around his ability to open small portals that lead to a distant space (within LOS, though, or at least relatively short ranged), where he can reach through and punch, or pick up items and bring them back through his side of the portal.

The 'visual effects' that come to mind are:

    - Punching an opponent in the back of the head, but be standing in front of them at the time.

    - Opening a portal to 'reach through' a door to unlock the lock on the other side; or, to pick up an item on the other side of a wall.

    How would you handle this?

    Stretching, w/ the Indirect Advantage?

    Desolidification, linked to Stretching?

  10. I'm wondering... how would you all design a hero (I'm thinking brick type, though maybe energy projector) who has a bad heart? This may be going hand in hand with the Age disad, though I might change that to just reflect the strain that his powers/origins inflict on his body.

On one hand, I could go the easy route, and just make it a phys lim of some sort. But I'm looking for an actual, mechanical effect to cover those instances that he just pushes himself too far.

    Any thoughts? Opinions? Advice?

  11. Re: Battletech/Mechwarrior Hero Resources

I can certainly understand that... I actually got out of Btech once the Clans arrived way back when. I read up on it with the release of the 'clicky tech' Dark Age game... the 'official' gameline is bringing the long-spanning canonical timeline into sycnh, and "Dawn of the Jihad" is the beginnings of the Dark Age- when the splinter group "Word of Blake" (from Comstar) decides to throw its hat into the arena as the savior of mankind... even if it has to destroy it to do so (nukes, anyone?).

So, it's an interesting time... I suppose you could mend it to have the Clans be non-existent. The Jihad is what brought me back into the fold, to be honest. :)

  12. So, I've bought my speedster's running as Flight, only when touching a surface. My GM is ruling that each phase that I'm perpendicular to the ground (i.e., running up a building), I'll have to expend a certain amount of inches in flight in order to circumvent gravity wanting to send me back down... I haven't thoroughly looked through the rules, but is that how it's handled?

  13. Re: The cranky thread

Seriously' date=' I have never seen any airport security drone search anyone with the same thoroughness that they searched this poor old lady who can barely lift a fork to her mouth, let alone commandeer and fly a fricking airliner. Yeah, I feel safe now.[/quote']

Louie Anderson once did a bit on this... waaay before 9/11, to boot.

"Sometimes when I'm at the airport, I just wanna go to security and say 'Psssst! Check that guy again.' But they can't... they're too busy dealing with a guy from Texas going 'Huh... must be mah [belt] buckle.'"

    :)

  14. Re: "TaleSpin" as a pulp setting

Khan is a wonderfully concepted "foil" for any hero. :hail:

Seriously... the perfect 'untouchable' bad guy... and it always seems that in the end, he wins. Always. Even when the heroes had no idea he could possibly have any interest in the affair!

  15. Re: "TaleSpin" as a pulp setting

I always liked Tale Spin just for the stories... animation and characters aside (though Khan was a personal favorite...). So much RPG potential there; I hope it's not discounted by too many. :)

At any rate, it certainly deserves mention in Pulp HERO as a source of inspiration.

  16. Re: The cranky thread

I'm really demotivated at work. I mean, as in I do the minimum required to keep my job. There was a time that I took pride in what I do, but it just seems like I've busted my ass for four years, and have nothing to show for it (especially the latest thing of getting a pay grade increase, but no pay raise). Part of me is angry that I dont' have enough saved up that I could just take time off of work and complete my MBA in a year or so.
