  1. Re: Radiation Shielding

    The table in question is:

    RADIATION SHIElDING

    Substance Radiation Multiplier

    Atmosphere

    Standard (per meter) .75

    Thin (per meter) .9

    Trace (per meter) .98

    Dense (per meter) .9

    Brick (per cm) .75

    Lead (per mm) .8

    Radiation Suit .7

    Rock (per cm) .75

    Soil (per cm) .75

    Spacesuit .9

    Steel (per mm) .9

Vehicle Hull (per point of PD) .9

    Water (per cm) .9

Wood or Plastic (per cm) .95

Concentrating on the "Atmosphere" portion, I maintain that it is flat out wrong.

Anyone here who agrees with Mr. Long that it is not?

  2. Yesterday I asked the following question:

    "Radiation Shielding

In 6E2 pg 155, the multiplier for dense atmosphere is given as 0.9/meter.

This is the same as is given for thin atmosphere. This appears to be a typo.

    What is the correct value?"

    Steve Long replied:

    "Re: Radiation Shielding

As far as I can recall the table is correct as listed. I'm not going to take the time to try to dig out my notes, but I recall being surprised myself at the fact that they were equal."

    Anyone care to comment?

  3. Re: Doc Savage Adventures that never were

Here's my idea for The Last Doc Savage Story

    Cold Messiah

It is November 21st, 1963. The assassination of President Kennedy has set off a firestorm in America! Desperate to discover who has committed the crime of the century, the United States Government turns to the Man of Bronze and his elderly cohorts! Battered and old, Doc Savage and his Men battle against sinister forces without and within the United States Government, only to find that a deadly enemy has risen from a watery grave to bring the world to it's knees! Can Doc Savage and his men save the world one last time with all the weapons of his old enemies turned against him?

Interesting idea. But if they are contacted on 11/21, they can just stop the assassination; it was on 11/22.

  4. Re: Help creating the D&D cleric's power Turn Undead

Under previous editions I built Undead as Automatons' date=' which would make use of PRE against them useless. I don't recall building a "turn undead" power so the issue never came up. But I like the builds mentioned above.[/quote']

If the campaign universe allows clerics to turn undead, I would think it correct to require all undead automotons to take either a suceptability or vulnerability to make them more effected by it than free willed undead.

  5. Re: Help creating the D&D cleric's power Turn Undead

I would use a different method: Presence.

Plus 50 Pre only vs undead (-1), requires end (-1/2) for 20 points, or maybe add the "requires OIF holy symbol" which would make it 17 points.

With only a basic 10 Pre, the cleric will get 12d6 => average roll 42 which should be +30 vs skeletons, zombies, etc. and +20 against more powerful undead. With +20 the undead may run, but definitely won't approach.

In much the same way that human beings are no smarter than amoebas because our brains are made of single cells which can only process the simplest information.

    That explains those people!

  7. Re: Gun laws in the south circa 1936

Wasn't this still the time period where you could buy Tommy guns and BARs from Sears through their catalog?

No, that was ended in 1933. Prior to that, there were NO federal gun control laws. The 1933 act restricted machine gun (automatic weapon) ownership.

You could still buy rifles, pistols and shotguns through the mail interstate however.

  8. Re: Where are the great shooters with lower dex?

With the older rules I general made soldiers/agents Dex 11 to 15; with 6th edition I am looking at 8 to 13.

8 to 10 for the "big bruiser" type who has above average Str and Con, and 11 to 13 for the more nimble types.

In either case, an OCV of 4 or 5 with one or two skill levels in small arms and several extra skill levels versus range penalties gives a reasonable marksman.

  9. Re: Gun laws in the south circa 1936

What were the gun laws at this time period? Could people legally carry pistols in town?

You do realize that the laws were different in every state, right?

However, as a general rule, in the south (states that had been part of CSA) whites Americans who wanted to carry guns could. In many (probably most, maybe all) of the states, it was illegal to carry a concealed weapon without a permit, but in general most any white man without a criminal record who wanted a permit could get it easily. Blacks and orientals, not so easy.

Of course, if you were known as a commie (including all socialists) you might have a harder time getting the permit. Other groups would have trouble in some places.

  10. This question concerns an attack that continues for a period of time.

Say a gas grenade that does 3d6 NND, area effect, a continueing charge that lasts 2 turns.

The rules say it 's effects occur each segment the attacker (who threw the grenade) has an action phase; but if anyone moves through the area on other segments, it also takes effect then.

What if someone is within the area of effect and does not move?

Does the effect occur every segment, or every segment either the attacker or the target has an action phase, or something else?

  11. Re: Diesel-punk Q-Branch

Most anything available before 1955 is reasonable. Of course leave out nuclear weapons unless you are prepared to deal with the consequences.

But a nuclear power plant for a ship, sub or base is possible. Jet planes and helicopters advanced enough for practical use are reasonable. Heat seeking missiles, beam riding missiles and wire guided missiles are feasible. Radar is certainly reasonable. Ballistic nylon which allows much better personal armor, primitive thermal imagery sensors, tasers, pepper spray, tiny radios (ala Dick Tracy), TV and amphibious cars are all possible. Binary liquid explosives and poison/sleep gases, VTOL aircraft of various types, antibiotics, practical air conditioning, primitive computers (Very primitive), rockets, hydrofoil boats, air cushion vehicles, and photocopy machines are possible.

  12. Re: Embers of the Reich

    Names 3? no problem

Large scale campaign operations with the russians:

    Operation Verona US/Soviet

    Operation Frantic Soviet /allies

    Operation Keelhaul Soviet/UK/US

There was in fact MUCH cooperation between the US and Soviet forces the issues didnt surface until the late war when Roosevelt left. :-) ( my degree is in Russian History)

While I am aware of several "Operation Veronas" in WWII, none of them involved the Soviets. Please specify what this was.

Operation Keelhaul took place after WWII was over.

In operation Frantic, US and British aircraft refueled at bases in the Ukraine; but it was generally considered a failure.
