  1. Re: Favorite Anti-Brick tricks?

Whoops, FenrisUlf. It is Flight, UAA.

I'd definitely ban it if I was running a campaign. I mean, imagine this scenario:

Player: "I use my 1hex, UAA Flight with Megascale at Dr. Destroyer."

    GM: "Uh...okaaay. You hit."

Player: "Now I use my Telescopic Vision and aim the good Doctor at Pluto."

    GM: &^*!

Thats why I'm surprised the thing isn't stop signed. (It's not, right? I don't recall offhand.)

  2. Re: Karate Kid vs Karate Kid

As an aside, where the heck did Val get his Kryptonian-level MA skills? I only vaguely recall someone posting that "he had studied MA all over the galaxy." C'mon, he had to learn them somehow! Remo had Chiun, Goku had King Kai...could somebody fill me in here as I basically don't know anything about the Legion.

As another aside, I remember one of the Silver Age continuties was that Superman was a "master of the Kryptonian martial arts." Now who wins...MA Superman vs. Karate Kid?:D

(Rep for anyone crazy enough to stat Kryptonian MA.);)

  3. Re: SPD and DEX for superheroic martial artists?

Yes, I know about the thing with the belts. It's just a convinient (sp!) way of converting people. Frex character X has studied for 10, 38, 50 years, so he's probably at (X) SPD and DEX.

Or to put it another way, it breaks things down into student/serious student/master/grandmaster, frex. Bruce, Morihei Ueshiba, and the like would probably come out on the top end of the list. Then you have your modern "masters" -- the guys who you meet at conventions and have spent 30-50 years on the martial arts. Then these guys' students -- the guys who run a local school (10 years seems to be the average for this, though there are people who, again, put the system out of whack who have studied for 20-30 years -- like my Taiji teacher), then these guys' serious students, and finally people who are just average students -- not fresh off the street, but not serious about the martial arts.

Whew! That's a lot. But that's how I picture the chart going. And as you've said, the people may move up and down the chart. IMHO, a McDojo person is not going to be on the same level as a guy who's studied for 10 years with a "master."

Thanks for reassurring things about the 4 SPD. I thought it was a little out of whack.

As for SPD/DEX vs. point total, I was talking about the new, base 350-pt. scale. I totally agree that Daredevil would have about 27 DEX -- the CU version of him in the FRed is 6 SPD, 26 DEX.

  4. I vaguely recall someone mentioning somewhere that SPD 4 was in line for a superheroic character who "had taken a few lessons at the dojo, but was not black belt level."

This seems really wrong to me, as in a heroic campaign, SPD 4 is master-level. OTOH, your average superhero martial artist seems to have 6 to 8 SPD.

Could we come out for a belt/time spent learning table that assigns the "proper' DEX and SPD dependig on belt rank and time spent learning the martial arts for a superhero setting?

  5. Re: Your "2007" Pet Gaming Projects

On a totally unrelated non-HERO RPG called "The Fifth Hour." I'm working on the novel right now. For more info, it's probably easiest to go to rpg.net and do a search for it. Think of Earthdawn meets Talislanta meets anti-Tolkien.

  6. Re: The President has a cronic medical condition

My doctor is convinced that the Prez has no real functions in the frontal lobes of his brain, meaning he can't make long term plans and is vulnerable to the occasional epileptic seizure (remember the peanut/pretzel/whatever incedent where the president hit his head on a table? It was really a seizure.)

  8. Re: Lasso's in Combat

There's a neat article in this mnth's Kungfu Tai Chi magazine about the Monkey rope. It has five interlocking knots at one end and a loop at the other. The knots were used to trip horses by throwing them at their leges, while the loop was used in HtH combat to entangle the opponent, even killing them by impaling them on their own weapons.

  9. Re: smallville stats

Um, isn't this why The Ultimate Speeder has the Speed Zone powerset? Clark's "faster than a speeding X" screams for it, especially in that episode where he is just a bit too slow to save his Dad, and the Flash ("Impulse" as his later codename) pulls him out of the way? Especially even more so when Clark and "Bart" have a race through Metropolis, with Clark just a bit behind Bart? (Although, it was revealed the "Impulse" has reserves of speed that Clark just can't touch, as in the end of the episode, Clark is reaching for Bart at full speed, and suddenly Bart disappears into the distance.)

  10. Re: The Villain Protocols

    Dr. Doom/Dr. Strange Spoiler:

Doom fights in a magical contest to determine who is the Sorceror Supreme of Earth. The contestants objective is to destroy a large crystillian growth. Any time the growth is tried to be destroyed by a mystic bolt, it starts firing off hypnotic bolts. The more powerful the bolt that is used to try to destroy the crystal, the more hypnotic bolts it fire.

Dr. Doom and Dr. Strange are the only ones to win, with Doom using the computers in his faceplate to copy Dr. Strange's moves. Meanwhile, Dr. Strange realizes that only his astral form is quick enough to avoid the bolts. So Strange releases his astral form and enters the crystal astrally, causing it to shut down.

Then it is revealed that the "reward" of the contest is for the Sorceror Supreme to help grant the wishes of the other remaining contestant.

Naturally, Doom asks Strange to help him rescue his mother's soul.

Doom then begins preparing, giving his armor x10 its usual power.

The pair then enter Mephisto's realm, and they acquire Doom's mother's soul in a form of statue. But they cannot seem to defeat Mephisto. In a last-ditch effort, Doom blasts Mephisto with anti-matter, to destroy him.

Unfortuanely, it turns out that Mephisto can control the physical laws of his realm, and so is immune to the antimatter. Strange then surrounds himself, Doom, and Doom's mother. Finally, Strange calls upon Oshtur to blast Mephisto with a humungous (sp?) mystic bolt. The side effect is that Doom's mother is free, and he can never see her again.

At then end, Doom says, "As I planned." It seems that Doom had worked out the entire conflict beforehand, enabling him to literally beat the Devil.

  11. Re: The Villain Protocols

Sad to say, that's already been covered in the Dr. Strange/Dr. Doom team-up graphic novel.

How the heck do I write spoilers in these posts? What happens is really cool, but I don't want to spoil it.

  12. Re: The Villain Protocols

Yes, I know. I was just giving a possible example. If Menton doesn't know about this power, it works. But if you have a better Protocol, just post it. (Not meaning to be offensive or anything -- this power came from the "bad powers" thread, and it was noted that it could take down Menton, that's all.)

  13. Re: Question: Chi Power Defense

Argh! You've messed up my write up of the character. :)

Now, how do I simulate STR/HtH Damage bonuses at the same time? I'm not sure if I just want to use HtH combat levels.

And then I have to add Lightning Reflexes...but probably not as bad as before. The write-up I have right now maxes out at hmm, I dunno, 63 Dex or so with all the bonuses stacked on IIRC.

(Yes, it's really that high for Ziran. Right now, he's at Super Saiyan 2 level if you add his regular bonuses before combat, his Dex Aid, and the 3 stacking bonuses of Str and Dex to simulate a Kaioken-like power.)

  14. Re: The Villain Protocols

Well, technically this is the thread for Champions villains. But nobody's posted protocols for them yet.

    One example comes to mind:

Menton: I Hear Puppies! :) The PC Menton tries to telepathically control/read/etc. has the power to hear all the thoughts of all of the puppies in the world. Menton hears all thoughts, screams, and passes out.

(Can't find the orignal post right now, do a search for it.)

  15. Re: Question: Chi Power Defense

    Lord Mhoram:

Yes, Ninja HERO and UMA are my favorite books.

Me too! I've been toying with write-ups for Hikuta/Kuta, Li Ho Ba Fa, and Russian MA (K-sys is the favorite of mine over Systema, but not by that much -- buy the K-sys manual if you can afford it [$35 US] off the K-sys site, it's well worth it.)

Now to return from the threadjack:

    LordMhoram wrote:

The only in HTH could make sense. Athough I am always leery of midturn speed changes - I find them awkward. Any time I have a speed boost, it only kicks in in 12 and lasts 1 turn.

The "bonuses diappear when opposes character moves out of HtH" - there are two question for the value of the limitation -

first - does it take time for these bonuses to return - or if Ziran did a half move and caught up to the target, would the bonuses reappear instantly. If so that isn't much of complete lim (especially STR, but some for Dex)

second and more importantly - does the character have any kind of non HtH offense. If not than the second limitation is worth less than a -1. The limitation doesn't limit the character much - basically it doesn't help ranged DCV (or skills or figured), but if the only offense the character has is a HtH offense, having a limitation that kills his abilities when not in HtH range doesn't limit the character all that much.

Nope, half move doesn't work. Ziran is supposed to have the world's best straight HtH style -- so if you move out of HtH range, he has to adjust completely again. Thus, no ranged offense either -- though I've been thinking about a Desolid dodge/escape power. Would that mess up the Limitation?

I'm completely cool about a character who can beat up nearly anybody in HtH combat, but can still be stopped by a gun, if that messes up the Limitation. (That is, I'm completely willing to drop that Desolid power.) That's why he has the Systema "Keep Moving!" normal maneuver -- +4 DCV Dodge, Full Move, after all -- in his non "super powered" MA. :)

  16. Re: Toying with new character concepts

For a psychic guy, I came up with the idea of Polykinesis. Like Telekinesis or Pyrokinesis, except now that you can form blasts (RKA), shapes (Entangles, Force Walls), and move things (Telekinesis) using any element you can imagine. Fire, ice, metal, wood, stone...you got it. You can also play around with the number and forms of the shapes (Autofire, Area Effect, Explosive, Fully Indirect, etc.)

So basically, you buy RKA, Entangle, Force Wall, and Telekenesis with the Advantanges +1/4 Variable SFX (Any Element) and +2 Variable Advantage (+1 Advantage, I believe.)

  17. Re: Question: Chi Power Defense

Cool! Thanks for how you would stat it up, LordMhoram.

But I've been crunching the numbers lately, it seems more effecient to give the character (called "Ziran" right now, after the Chinese word for "nature" or "natural") straight stat bonuses instead of Aid or Succor. Flat bonuses to SPD, DEX, and/or STR seem to be a better choice, even with the Limitations Only in Hand to Hand Combat (-1/2) and Bonuses Disappear Totally When Opposing Character(s) Moves Out of Hand to Hand Combat Range (-1.)

Otherwise, characters like Black Cat will thrash Ziran, even with Ziran's Timestopping, [which is defined as +SPD (right now, 6 SPD), costs END], because it will take time for the Aids/Succors to reach maximum.

    Your thoughts?

BTW, do you think my Limitations are off? The first one seems OK to me, but I'm not sure if the second should be more.

  18. Hi, I've been busy trying to write up a heroic-level MA who by means of his extraordinary fighting style, can beat almost any other MA -- with a bit of luck for the high-end chars, natch.

One of the test opponents for this char was the recently posted Black Cat.

Now, BC has a 20-pt Power Defense defined as "It's -my- Chi." The character I'm writing up has Dex and Speed Drains defined as "leading the opponent" and "blending with the opponent", respectively.

Now, my rules-lawyer side says, yes, BC's Power Defense applies. However, my common sense says, no, it does not apply because of the SFX of her Power Defense.

    How would you rule this?
